Welcome to your first lesson on how to play didgeridoo. In this video class you will learn some basic breathing techniques, how to use the different parts of your body required for playing, and some simple practices that you can start working on every day.
Playing didgeridoo requires use of the lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, lungs, diaphragm, abdominal (abs) and intercostal muscles, voice, face muscles and more. Though it looks like playing a simple tube, this practice involves a lot more than what appears on the surface.
Nearly anyone with the patience and discipline to maintain a daily practice will learn how to play didgeridoo effectively and achieve positive results. The key is consistency: 20-30 minutes per day with these exercises will boost your playing rapidly.
In this video we cover: Breathing techniques, How to utilize your throat, The lip buzz and how to build lip strength, Hitting the “sweet spot” and getting a great didgeridoo sound, and What to practice when you are just starting.
The “sweet spot” is the position of your lips where the drone of the didgeridoo sounds the best. You will know when you are hitting the sweet spot because you will hear a full bass drone in the low register and rich harmonics in the higher register. When you hit the “sweet spot” the air pressure system comes into balance and your breath will last longer. This video covers the best technique for finding and staying on the sweet spot.
Choosing a didgeridoo: The instrument you choose makes a big difference. Most of our clients start on a low-cost plastic didgeridoo, garnering the ability to receive great benefits. Intermediate and advanced players choose wooden instruments for their superior resonance and playability.
Musically speaking the didgeridoo is both a pitched and a percussive instrument. Each didge has a primary tone (known as the fundamental) as well as a series of overtones that can be controlled by the lips, throat and cheeks of the player. The didgeridoo can be played both ambiently and rhythmically, serving as both an atmospheric and a time keeping instrument. The didgeridoo creates low frequencies rich with overtones, making it an ideal tool for meditation.
This is the first out of six lessons from our beginner’s didgeridoo course, The ABCs of Didgeridoo.

This is so helpful. Thank you. I bought this didgeridoo about 20 years ago. I didn't even know what it was. I just was drawn to it. It has had a spot on my wall for over two decades. THEN, all these years later I began learning about frequencies and the power of sound in worship. I saw someone playing a didgeridoo and the resonance filled me up with joy, especially since I recognized that "art piece" on my wall was a gift from Yah. I am so grateful. Again, thank you.

I know this is a year old, but I might be helpful. It should be a relaxed, gentle pressure. Don't mash it in, but you can certainly relax into it a bit. Basically the minimum pressure that allows a consistent sound.
I'm a trombone player, primarily, but I play around with a didgeridoo, and the embouchure is very similar.

    • @larsgundy
      @larsgundy 6 років тому +8

Also, yes, there is a seal in the sense that no air should be escaping outside of the didgeridoo, but it shouldn't be an intense seal at all.

I'd say I have about 2 hours total on my didge so far. I start by watching this video from start to finish. The last 2 sessions I watched this video twice in a row and the last session I actually got the correct resonation albeit only for a few seconds. This last session I was able to hit the sweet spot after about 20 minutes. Amazing the sound and how it resonates through my whole body. Kinda sounds like a light saber. Major thanks to the didge project!

I just began. I couldn't do the horse-lips like you do. But I find a buzz-lips with a push on that "full throat" thing and -- the horn makes it own sound! That's so cool! Er... for like .7 seconds. I'm hoping I get better at this lol

I've always been interested in the fascinating sound of the didgeridoo, but never knew exactly how that VERY cool sound is produced. Now I understand, so thank you!
It looks to me like not everyone would be able to successfully play this instrument, because some people just have very thin lips (or even almost NO lips, in some cases), and it looks like having full, fleshy lips would make the best didgeridoo players. Or am I wrong?

    • @didgeproject

I think pretty much anyone can play didgeridoo. If someone is having problems getting the lips to vibrate, have them watch this video and practice these exercises: ua-cam.com/video/UAjVjkMFIjI/v-deo.html

Great video! Haven't played one of these badboys for years, but decided to buy one cheap for an ambient project I'm working on. Couldn't remember how to play it at all, but 1st 5 mins of the vid and I'd nailed it again. Nice and easy stepwise intro, and excellent advise on a training regimen.

I've managed to get a tone after about ten mins, but man after a while feels like your lips get tired and don't reverberate as they do initially haha.
Thanks very much, for the lesson - I'll keep trying, at the very least, this seems like good breathing therapy for the lungs.

Came to the concept of Didgeridoo from a fictional story with a main character from Australia, the writer took special pains to really flesh out the culture and history not just a cheesy "crocodile Dundee" stereotype. Anywho built myself a practice Didgeridoo from some PVC and cardboard tubes. One of these days I want to actually take at least a few lessons from someone who knows their stuff. But until then, this seems to be a very good tutorial.
