I remember hearing this on the radio and recording it to a mix tape but had no idea who had done it. I wouldn't have guessed Cat Stevens in a million years.
This is a blast from the past! Back in '77 - '78, me and my buddy would give each other weird, knowing looks and say to each other, "Wuzze?", referring to this song. No hidden meaning or any such thing, just two stoner teenagers being weird. But the memories that this song dredges up are priceless.
Bro we still were getting high jammin sweet shot like this when I was a teen in the late 10s lmao. You can tell whos cool it transends generation's haha
A visionary track - so far ahead of the pack it's untrue. I'd love to have been a fly on the studio wall to see how this was conceived and I'd love to know if there were more tracks like this that never made the album!
@@richardduran9731 Yeah! The Dub mix of the Exodus Together Forever track is a favourite, it wasn't till a few years ago that I realised it came out in 1982, at the time I first heard it in the late 80s UK house clubs I thought it was a recent release! So many ahead of their time Records like the 1978 Black Devil Disco Club album, Manuel Gottsching's E2E4 or Time Warp by the Coachouse Rhythm Section for example.
His penultimate album. Izitso was released in 1977. He bowed out of the music business not long after his final album and converted to Islam. He returned some years later as Yusuf Islam as resumed his music career. Izitso was so different from all his other albums, more synthesisers. If did not know in advance who the artist was, when hearing Was dog a donut? You would never have guessed it was Cat Stevens !
Fascinating tune. I agree…Way ahead of its time. Takes real genius to create something so startlingly futuristic. He could have recorded this yesterday (November 8, 2023), and none one would know the difference!
I grew up hearing this song and always thought that it was an electro breakdancing song made by some electro boogie producer... It was only today that I found out it was Cat Stevens. I would have never guessed.
A lot of the sound of this album comes from the polymoog. I think he was one of the first people to own one. Add Chick Corea to the the equation and hey presto!
The production value of this excellent track is very clean and direct, sounding outside the speakers. Better quality than Kraftwerk's Autobahn and The Man Machine - from around the same time. Very impressive. I have been appreciating Yusuf/Cat's music most of my life since my Dad loved his music and I inherited his LP's and Foreigner on tape. I have listened to The Laughing Apple when came out and love it. But today I was having a Cat/Yusuf music day at home and heard "Was Dog a Doughnut" for the first time. I am blown away. I would be very interested to know more about the synths and drum machine used (and what desk and outboard), where the dog bark (must have been tape) came from and why! Hope Yusuf/Cat revisits electronic music in whole or in part = the vocals on The Laughing Apple show that Yusuf/Cat's voice is at it's best ever - lovely and smooth and even the classic deep growl has just become more tuneful. This legend has further depths. Bless you Yusuf!
This was a Great Hit! I would say the answer to the question "Was Dog a Donut?" is YEESSSS!If you like this you'll also probably like - "Trans Europe Express" by Kraftwerk - "Dance to the Drummers Beat" by Herman Kelley- "Whip" It by Devo - "Miss You" by The Rolling Stones

Buna melodía..soy de URUGUAY 🇺🇾
This song was way ahead of the music of that time. I'm happy to have experienced it.
I remember first hearing this song being played in my sister's room, I still play it till this day. 😊😂
This was the track that got me into this album....

Such a great sound...electric hip hop, before its time.
Not hardly hip hop
Miles ahead indeed 👍😁.
@SpookOneMusic I agree but this song actually contributed to the birth of hip hop and break dancing.
You could tell me this was straight out of the early 90s and I would 100% beleive you. Incredible!
Same...SAME!

Jazz master Chick Corea on synth and Rhodes piano.
Part of this sounds like a soundtrack of an early 90s game
