I appreciate your content, and I’m glad you touch on things that are unsaid in your videos, in your comments. So many folks that are used to running conventional boilers complain about how these gassers are junk, won’t run, and are a huge waste of money. I’ve began to see those people don’t read the manual or do any research to help themselves understand how to properly use these units. Those people are giving bad advice and it’s extremely infuriating to someone like me who is making the switch from a conventional unit to an EPA model. I even had a dealer refuse to sell me a clean fire, classic edge’s brother, because he is an old school guy that doesn’t quite understand them. There is a learning curve to using these boilers, and you have to adjust your routine to make them run correctly. You can’t load big splits, rounds or nasty wet wood, shut the door and expect the fire to stay running like a conventional unit. It’s all about keeping a good loose coal bed and air flow, not running huge “over nighters”. Close your mouth and nostrils off air tight, or bite off a big chunk of bread and swallow it without chewing and see how long you survive 🤦🏻♂️. I saw a video today of a guy with HUGE wood in his complaining about the fire going out. READ THE LITERATURE! Less is more! 4 to 6 inch round wood TOPS, says it right there in the manual. Anyhow, rant over. You were a big help in making my decision to switch. Keep up the accurate content and procedures to running these things! Thanks from Missouri!
For anyone considering I own the exact same stove. It is definitely worth getting the “gasification” style stove no matter what brand you choose. The “old style” or pre-epa stove will be cheaper initially. I am not a dealer. I am telling you these gasification stoves will cut your wood use close to half. This is one time the epa did us a favor. They smoke 85% less. 75% less ash. That’s being conservative. I would recommend installing yourself to save money. It’s easy to do, just hard work. Go to the rental store and grab a small trencher and have it.
Captain smarty pants back again. I forgot to mention why my last stove was replaced with the one this fella has. To whom it may concern. My old stove had a 1/4 inch steel fire box. The new one is titanium. Supposed to be better? I believe it is. I digress. When the manufacturers say to not burn trash or cardboard in your stove you should listen. The fire box in my old ten thousand dollar stove prematurely started leaking because I burned all my boxes in it. Its not the cardboard as it turns out, it’s the ink. I almost exclusively burned cardboard in the summer to hear my water. It ain’t worth it folks. Don’t do it. Now I’m sure a piece or two now and then to start your fire won’t hurt a thing. I was just starting to recover the cost of my first stove when it blew. I cost myself a lot of money.
I have same unit I load mine from inside an old re-purposed oil field shield so all my wood is out of elements and easily grabbed. Do you ever consider putting a wind break barrier up around your unit to help prevent cold winds from cooling it down? Mine stays warm but the thoughts of building a fence/wall around 3 outside parts has me curious
We thought about it but I don’t think we’re going to go that direction right now. Not because we don’t want to, just other larger projects to tackle before we work on that.
Good video we have been looking at getting a boiler for a couple of years now tossing up weather to get a old style or gas aviation model Live on a farm and have plenty of wood
Hi, Great video. I have a classic edge 550 as well. If the weather is above freezing I have a lot of trouble with creosote buildup especially in the primary air flow elbow. It builds up a thick tar in the elbow. Nasty to clean out. I usually clean this elbow out every week. I use covered seasoned wood and I usually load the furnace 3 or 4 times a day with small amounts of wood to minimize this during warm temperatures. I have also adjusted the fire star idle Pulse to pulse every 8 minutes instead of the factory setting of 20 minutes. This helps a bit. Have you ever had this problem.
I haven’t had this problem with my furnace. I keep my water temp between 175-185. Idle air pulses are set to give air 90 seconds for every 15 minutes. My old furnace used to build up bad. This one hasn’t given me that issue at all!
Maybe I missed it in the video but can you explain where you live, what your average and low winter temps are, and what you think your cost per winter is to heat?
Doug K Garage- I live in southwestern Pa. average temps can swing pretty dramatically. January normally sees highs in the low 30’s and lows in the low twenties. Cost per year depends on if I cut the tree or I’m cutting up an already fell tree, or if I have to buy. On the VERY high end( me buying all the wood) about 600 bucks. On the low end, probably 200(fuel for splitter, chainsaw, truck) Cost per winter, is pretty hard. Electric Bill is significantly cheaper due to domestic hot water being fueled by the furnace. Electric bill in the winter time is between 60-80 bucks vs 160-200’in the summer. I would say that with savings from electric bill, and cost of fuel(wood) I would heat my house for probably around 700 bucks a year. I also run mine from November to mid march(depending on the temp)
Nice unit. I’m partial to the Garn boiler hence my name. Nice plumbing. Do you have any insulation for the heat lines in the basement? Nice job on the zone valve for air to water hx. It sad it took North American manufacturers 30 years to catch up to the European boilers. Check out Froling or Tarm or Atmos are a few I researched over 15 years before I built mine but yeah I settled on a Garn style.
Garny no insulation in the basement. It actually heats (not on purpose) my tile floor in our kitchen. I kinda like that. The jury is still out on this new furnace but seems to work we so far. Stay tuned for a fire up video in late October/ early November!
Rocky Acres Farmstead will do. Well if your new furnace doesn’t work out for you but you enjoy burning wood and want to do it for years to come I hope you check out Garn. Been around for almost 40 years and they have always been a clean burning high efficiency easy to operate gasification boiler.
I see your 1400 was about 8 years old. What went wrong with it? I had the E-Classic 2400 2012 to 2020 and it leaked twice on me. The first time in 2018 I patched it and moved on. Two years later when i was cleaning it, it leaked again same spot just below the air vents at the door. Since i was in the 8th year the corrosion warranty was still in effect and I got over three grand off of a new 560 model. From the time I talked to my dealer about the issue it was bout two and a half weeks before he had a new one in stock to pickup.
Your experience is VERY similar to what I experienced. The leak was in the primary air tube on the bottom. It was a pinhole leak that ended up draining all the water. Thankfully the fire was out because I was cleaning the furnace at the time. My dealer wasn’t going to have a furnace in stock so a neighboring dealer in WV ended up hooking me up in a pinch.
I have the same model. I was glad to hear you mention that uou have found the reaction chamber to be running at a lower temperature. I rarely get over 850 to 900 degrees. My question is...have you had issues with the accumulation of liquid creosote on the rear heat exchanger?
Currently going through a warranty claim for an eclassic 2400. Been waiting a week for what my options might be. What kind of timeline should I expect and What kind of trade value do these things have towards a new unit obviously age and condition differs. Appreciate any tips you can give!
I haven’t. Only electrical parts are the blower motor and the water pump. Both run hardly anything. I can tell you in January and February, I average about 80.00 a month vs 200.00 per month in the summer.
We live on a farm. The whole family doesn’t all go away at the same time. If our family leaves, the others pick up for us, including loading the furnace.
I have same unit. I have 2 thermostats inside house one acts as a back up. When we leave I let my fire burn out (great for cleaning) and turn the propane thermostat up to keep house from freezing. I leave water pump circulating to keep water lines from freezing
Why is the boiler so far from your wood, and your house? What do you do when you get 30 inches of snow? I have had my e classic since 2008. It’s 10 feet from my house and I live in the suburbs. You have to position it so the prevailing wind blows the smoke/combustion gas away from the house. Also, my boiler is surrounded by large trees so me and my neighbors don’t see it. I like all of the new features your boiler has like WiFi, and better air controls. What I don’t like is the small door that is also high off of the ground. My door is much bigger so I can put larger heavy unsplit wood in. I live in philly suburbs and heat a 9000 sqft house.
It’s only about 20-25 feet from my house and the wood is probably another 20 feet from there. I placed it there because of prevailing wind and also a spot in the yard that didn’t take up other, more usable real estate. The door is smaller than my EClassic but the wood your supposed to burn should only be 6x6 or smaller. 30 inches of snow on our side of the state would be a snowmageddon. Lol. When we get a foot it’s something to talk about. 1996 was the last large crippling snowfall for us.
The manual tells you to load the furnace twice a day. Due to the way I work, I load it once a day. That works well for me except when it is 10 degree high temps. I’ll throw a couple logs in before work and it will hold me over. Long story short, I load it once per day and twice when it is very cold out.
Joseph Brusco average consumption depends on how cold of a winter. If it were a brutal winter, I would estimate around 10 cord. Average winter- 7 cord. Mild winter- 5
@@RockyAcresFarmstead Wow. Our very old pacific western crapped out last year. Looking at a new edge for this season here in Canada. Average winter temp is -4F Last year we went through 83 face cords. New should save a lot of work. Thanks for your informative video's
