My wife and I saw Joe play just before he died -- at a casino in Atlantic City. (There's a film of that day showing Joe on the boardwalk approaching passers-by and asking them to come to the show.) The irony of the venue was not lost on Joe; he had a twinkle in his eye the whole evening. Before one of his political numbers, he said, "This next one is a love song." My wife yelled to him, "Sing it to me, Joe." Joe looked at her, smiled, and said, "It doesn't make any sense, but I'll try."
That's a lovely story mate. I think he was a good bloke with a kind heart, more than just a musician. I remember the day we lost him very clearly and I was gutted. I hope he is in a good place with fiends now. Remembering you Joe.
This is one of my favorite cover songs of all time, and a main reason why is that he sings in his own accent, instead of trying to imitate Bob Marley’s Jamaican accent. It makes the song his own without disrespecting the original. It also helps that, while he makes other changes of his own (adding to the instrumental, lowering it by a major 6th to match his vocal range), he also keeps the lyrics pretty much the same, keeps the same tempo, and still bases it around guitar. Just a wonderful balance of respect to the original and innovation.
I think of Strummer sometimes as a moral guide. Not a perfect man, I know, but someone who strove for better things for himself and humanity. We often look for inspiration in religion or the words of philosophers, but there can be wisdom even in the words of a child. I think Joe knew this. Thanks Joe, we're trying out here...
You summed what i think about Joe,his was so determinate and courageous and really it make us question everything now,Joe we miss you and will never forget you, rest easy!!
A plaza named by Joe Strummer, in honour of him, was inaugurated in the Spainish city Granada last week, hope you people who love Joe come and visit this plaza.
I was ten when Joe died. Nearly nine years later now and it feels like he's standing beside me pushing me along. The charity 'Strummerville' that was set up in his name have helped me and many other young musicians to get out there and play our music. Thanks to Joe I was able to record an album, so thank you man. Even after death you haven't given up on people. Thank you.
I was 16 when he died, and even at that point he was incredibly special to me. Still miss him to this day. Wish he was still around now to help us all out in these crazy times
Joe and his music inspired me as I was a teenage rebel girl, it shaped me and helped me with anger and dissapointmet of surrounding reality. Always in my mind and heart. Thank you my hero.
Joe Strummer is my hero. I am 17, i never heard his music in his lifetime but now I have, he means everything to me. He showed me why it's important to make music that's more than pretty. It has to mean something to someone, it has to take you somewhere. He taught me that there is no bad form of music. He taught me that the world is a big place and it moves fast so you have to experience as much of it as possible otherwise you waste your life. Joe, thank you for everything. You are missed.
Joe Strummer has gained the highest level of admiration from me. He was a great human being and a great musician. We don't get people like him too often. R.I.P. Joe Strummer. The king is gone, but he's not forgotten.
Here again in 2024, was blessed in 2012 to travel to NYC to see this mural in person. RIP Joe. Wish I had stayed around in 2003-4 to see yall at Hootenanny in Irvine,CA
On my darkest days, playing this lightens things up a little. Even on my brightest days, this song makes life a little brighter. The future is unwritten. Write your own happy ending.
Strummer, and all The Clash will be ever one of the most influential bands of all the history. We have a debt of gratitude with the music of The Clash. We'll never forget their music and their authentic attitude. Thanks for all this moments.
Happy birthday Joe. I wasn't around to witness your influence on the world, but you are without a doubt the most insightful musician and are most certainly a huge influence. RIP
Joe had the ability to change the way people thought about the world. It's amazing that one man could do so much for so many - it's a shame he only had 50 years here. Even 8 years gone, he's still changing lives one by one as new generations discover the Clash. Legend.
il never forget when i went to NYC for a Model UN simulation in university. we only had two days out of the week to walk around the city while everyone else went to ESB and Brooklyn Bridge I went to see Joe Strummer. As I stepped out of the cab and I locked eyes with the memorial I broke down in tears. this man who i never met a man who I had I only discovered his music 4 years after his death, and i was on my knees bawling my eyes out. thats the power you had joe. rip
Never saw the clash, but I got to see Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros at the Newport music hall one day. This was a very life-changing event, highly memorable.
I saw The Clash in Atlanta in '82. I hate that I never got to see him with The Mescaleros. My friends, Southern Culture on the Skids, played a show with them, and their bass player Mary has a picture of her with Joe.
I miss Joe Strummer, Joe will remain alive in my heart and in the hearts of the fans. When I hear Joe's voice I cry and I think Joe deserves these tears
Well I’m a 17 year old boy and I discovered The Clash this year I listen to their tracks everyday and think why does such a big part off other teens to pop? This is what music is al about, making a difference, inspire people, show them their not alone if they feel lonely, guilty, sad or mad in and about the world and their leaders, being an example for others who could change the world to in their way... trust me I might not have known Joe Strummer as much as a lot of you guys, but he lives on also in the heart of a lot of younger people. Joe is one off my many examples and he’ll be 4ever certainly in the days when fear and anger rule a huge part of this planet.
When ever we feel like the forces of greed and corruption are grinding us down, there is Joe Srummer to lift us up with songs of freedom. The world is missing one of its prophets. Love you Joe!
Joe nailed this song in his own unique style and just proved yet again what a talent this guy was,is and always will be! I bet heaven has never been the same since Joe went up there!lol Miss u Joe
I love Joe Strumer I have ever heard a more beautiful song. I don't know why it makes me cry each time. There's so much heart and soul in his singing. I miss him. Thanks Joe, with love ❤️ RIHP
I think his little speech before the song gives me as much chills as this song does. Beautiful song, amazing singer, perfect punk-rocker. I miss Joe. He changed my life and everything. "We're nothing without people." We need you in this world Joe, people are losing their ideology and faith. Come back please?
This is a beautiful eulogy for Joe, he and his friends changed music and our lives forever. Wherever he is now, I hope he is with friends and at peace. ❤

We must love Joe in the way he was, in the way he saw our world, in the way he wanted it to be. He just wanted us to be free to see it, to understand it and to criticize it in the best way. R.I.P. Joe, and bless him. Greetings!
I was at the Joe Strummer memorial mural in the East Village, two days ago. A mys tical moment ... Maximum respect to somebody who maintained continuity, consistency, dignity and humanity till the very end. He is sorely missed !
In the lecture hall in Healey Library @ UMass Boston, someone carved "Joe Strummer 1952-2002" on the back of one of the seats. Rest easy, Joe; your memory lives on.
Cant believe its the 22nd...i miss Joe more than anything. He made me who i am today. I wish he could know how many people he touched. He will never be forgotten. Thumbs up if Joe had an impact on your life

I think of Joe or listen to his music every day...this is the best version of this song EVER. Now I need to go home because I am sitting at my desk about to cry after watching this video. I will never get over the fact that Joe is gone.
Stumbled on this today. Jesus, Joe knew. He knew that the only way we're getting ourselves out of this is each other. We need this, and we need Joe's message today more than ever. We need to pick each other up; we need to help each other out. Thank you Joe. If there's any justice in creation you're in a better place, watching us. Please help us.
My brother is a great admirer of Joe's and attends all tribute nights so I listened to all Joe's music and got to love it. He sang with genuine passion and feeling, God bless him.

My wife yelled to him, "Sing it to me, Joe." Joe looked at her, smiled, and said, "It doesn't make any sense, but I'll try."
I saw him play after he died and it was revelatory
Joe strummer the future is unwritten is a great film
I caught him in columbus just before he passed. Thankfully!
That's a lovely story mate. I think he was a good bloke with a kind heart, more than just a musician. I remember the day we lost him very clearly and I was gutted. I hope he is in a good place with fiends now. Remembering you Joe.
I wish I could've seen him live. I loved The Clash and I loved him with the Mescaleros...
