"It's basically turning your body into Chernobyl, except it's very slow, decaying way to go instead of an explosion" - T.Folse 2024
I think the title and the first couple minutes are there to target confirmation bias. People who smoke are less likely to watch a video called "Smoking is bad y'all". That and kids/teens. Kids are more likely to get invested in a video that at least initially seems to say something "scandalous" that their parents would get mad at.
its not a hard rule but in construction, smokers still get more breaks especially since they now cant smoke while working
Throw in restaurants to that. I've known tons of people who get 0 breaks, but the smokers go out for a 5 min ten times a day at the same place
@oxylepy2 when i managed pizza during college everyone got the same 15min break once a shift regardless
WTF are you on about? We smoke while working plenty, if the foreman smokes and the owners are not around.

Addictions are subscriptions you can't End, They End with You
eh, they can easily be ended
@@anomaly3215 If it was easy everyone would do it.
Eh, everyone has addictions.
Some are more dangerous or less socially acceptable then others.
Good example caffeine, not very dangerous if it all in most cases and very socially acceptable.
On the other hand smoking is less and less acceptable. Very dangerous, perhaps one of the most dangerous addictions period.
Me I'm very for thinking about addiction constructively. Not all addictions are bad things and some can be the end of you. It's important to ask about the value something brings to life rather then if it is addictive.
Coffee for instance, i love the stuff. Not just for the caffeine. It's addictive in multiple ways and yet it brings enjoyable rituals, it's Delicious. It is constructively social and increases productivity .
@@anomaly3215 Well, even if you've been clean for 20 years from alcohol, and you decide one night to get drunk, you may just send yourself back into it.
What about nicotine gums?
I've tried out smoking in college and after about half a pack in 2 weeks, I noticed that I didn't hate it anymore, so I left the rest of the pack at a train station, not wanting to get addicted. I still notice, years later, that I don't hate smelling smoke as much as I used to and when I'm stressed, I sometimes want to borrow a cigarette from someone.
My grandma smoked around us when we were kids all the time so I've always just thought the smell of smoke was calming. Though I grew up in the generation of "okay class, we're going to walk around to show you fourth graders the pig lung with 30 years worth of simulated smoking damage", so I never tried traditional cigarettes. Had like maybe 3 disposable esigs when I was 18 before all the dangers became more public knowledge, and even though I didn't have any problems walking away from those, I do get a weird mood for them rarely now years later
Single handedly the best anti smoking video ever. Especially coupled with T. Folse's added information. I bought a vape knowing i need to at least switch because i want to live for my son. Yeah i will not be making excuses anymore. This made me throw out the smoke i lit up as i clicked on this video.
Just wanted to say I am super proud of you for doing this. I wish you the best of luck on quitting
Stay strong and keep it up!
Stopped smoking a year ago after 8 years of smoking and many bad short attempts. It was harsh, but manageable. Found out (at least for me) that it's not about "power of will" or something. It's about your decision that you are not taking a break from smoking, but stopping completely and won't returning ever.
Gave myself 2 days before that, smoked last one and that's it.
Good job!
9:02 maybe if more people understand smoking as you personal chernobyl more people might quit smoking
Never ever
This just makes me wanna do it more that sounds metal as fuck. Finna cheif that strontium 90 pack in front of the haters, shit ain't nothing to me man
Anti-smoking statistics like the ones found in this and kurzgesagt's video don't do as much as you'd expect in terms of changing the mind of smokers.
Most of the engagement of anti-smoking media is from those who are already against smoking.
The few smokers who are actually recommended the video by youtube's algorithm either will click off after the first couple minutes or they don't care about the short or long term repercussions.

I worked at a grocery store that still had that smoking breaks. I remember that someone of us would buy a pack and blow into the lit cigarettes just to get the same breaks
I smoked for 10 years of my life straight. I tried numerous drugs, almost every drug that isn't injected. Tobacco is 100% my drug of choice, nothing makes me feel like it. I could smoke 2 packs easily, then I moved to rolling cigs but I could also still smoke almost the entire day, sometimes chainsmoking. I quitted 7 years ago, it was the hardest addiction to beat, it made me physically ill for a long time. That need never truly leaves, it stays there forever, and it's not pretty. I wasted hundreds of thousands of euros killing myself with a drug. DO NOT PICK A CIGARETTE, it's the most addictive drug ever.
As a former smoker I'd say this video is right on the money.
As for the smoker's break, when I quit smoking I suddenly noticed how it was frowned upon when I took a few minutes as opposed to doing the same to smoke a cigarette. Really weird and didn't help with how I experienced the workload at the time.
Smoking breaks still very much exist, at least they do here in Germany and it is absolutely infuriating for non-smokers like myself.
Like, I wanna point out, the video title and the video itself is probably one of the least obnoxious anti-smoking campaigns I have ever seen. As a smoker, anti-smoking ads typically leave me feeling dehumanized and disinterested in both quitting and regarding non-smokers as even human. Like, you get judgy with me, I will get judgy with you, and we won't get anywhere and we will spin wheels, you will leave feeling inadequate and disgusted at humans, I will leave feeling oppressed and disenfranchised. This benefits no one. More ads like this would be incredibly helpful since it would actually welcome smokers back into society, and we could actually work on constructing a world better for everyone rather then judging each other.
as someone who currently also smokes. Yes to everything here, and i got new motivation to quit from this
Didn't you get angry at Veritasium for his "most radioactive place on Earth" video?
Thank you for allowing us to charm in and hear some of your knowledge.
I started smoking at 16 and around 26 I failed to quit nicotine, but switched to a vape. Who knows what that's doing to me, here five years later.
Nicotine is horribly addictive. I had to quit for my two pregnancies and picked it right back up as I got overwhelmed with raising babies. ☹️ I'm ashamed that I can't seem to let it go and have so many excuses for why it feels impossible right now (I have had some abnormally severe stressors for the past two years that really aren't putting me in a good place mentally, such as my mom declining and at some point will be dying of the horrific disease ALS, for example). I know there are no valid excuses, I just can't explain how difficult it can be to quit in times of great stress. Thankfully life wasn't so stressful during the times I was pregnant.
Anyway, I've cut my nicotine level in half, so I am taking the steps, slowly. I hope anyone out there who's struggling with addiction gets the support and motivation they need to quit before it becomes a serious medical problem.
Vaping isn't good for you... But it's a lot better than smoking.
"Vape lung" is meaningless propaganda, as you inhale even worse metals when you smoke, and a lot of cases of vape lung later turned out to be COVID.
while above comment is correct in some ways, the problem with vaping is that its something new and not really tested, depending on the way you use it. id recommend not really trying brand new stuff unless youve heard that theyre safe
but i wanna say that even the fact that youve been able to quit during pregnancy is something worth to be proud of. addiction is a very hard thing to fight, especially if there is stress, so youre doing good, i promise
@@AmaroqStarwind I will say that respiratory infections linger for longer if you vape, especially if you do so while you have the infection. Otherwise I haven't personally noticed any issues. Hopefully in the coming years they'll determine that it's not a super bad vice like other substances.
@@fool4343 thanks! It's definitely a struggle and I hope I will successfully stop before doing any potentially permanent or long term damage. Nicotine is a cruel substance.
One of the worst things about smoking for me is the association with drinking coffee and eating a meal. When i tried to stop smoking i always automatically grabbed into my pockets to roll one.
Smokers where I worked often took unofficial breaks and got sympathy from management (who near-universally also smoked) in taking these breaks, which management would often encourage.
In a lot of call centers I've worked in (Glasgow Scotland) smokers would be alllowed to go outside to smoke and it not be counted as their official break time. So they would get an extra 20 mins or so a day of breaks. Same when I worked in recruitment. Thats a recently as 4 years ago.
I can just imagine that a teen sees this video shows their mom to say smoking is amazing and getting absolutely crushed
For one... it's deserved because it's a good idea to say what it does internally with the bad before even starting it.....I'm not ganna lie.... addiction is stupid hard to break... though it's not smoking... it's hard to stop
My mother smoked from 17 until she was in her 40s. She quit cold turkey after a cancer false alarm scare for her family and hasn't touched a smoke since. She's like her mid 60s now and says to this day she doesn't regret quitting
“Do they though?” Yes that’s the problem with addictions
1:47 I worked at a Japanese owned company for awhile (in the United States; California specifically) and they had dedicated smoke breaks though at some point when working there someone made a big enough deal about it so everyone got 3 15 minute breaks you could do that wouldn't count against your overall time worked for that day.
Before you got a break when you smoked, now no one gets breaks.
1:43 They still exists in Japan, but some businesses are just giving the non smokers more vacation days instead of those breaks.

As someone who lost his grandfather to lung cancer a few years ago, this was really difficult to watch, but also really informative.
I've worked for a lot of companies, depending on management (usually also smokers), we'd get "smoke breaks" which were on the clock. They weren't defined or determined, just "have a quick smoke and get back to work". Of course, often you'd need to keep an eye out for customers while smoking, and occasionally pause to ring one up.
Really enjoy a lot of your videos this one for me was up there along with the one it seemed you even struggled with how awful it was how someone passed from radiation. I work with many people that smoke, a coworker quit for a year then somehow started again.
If you've never had a true addiction then you wouldnt fully understand.... it's insanely difficult to stop... even after so long... the feeling and craving and strong urge to feed the addiction is tough... it's like being chained to a car and the driver floors it to get you to giving in and feeding the addiction... it's not easy to stop in any way
Interesting reaction. The first time I heard that there are radioactive compounds inside cigarette smoke. Which is very interesting as the carcinogenic effects of the chemicals present are widely known and mentioned multiple times in biology lessons/textbooks. Makes complete sense though. However, in terms of health effects it is not clear whether it is the carcinogenic effect of the chemical compounds that is greater than the carcinogenic effect of the radiation. The inflammation caused by nicotine leading to emphysema is also a very important factor. The reason alveoli stop being able to expand and contract properly is due to elastin damage caused by the inflammation. Regarding 8:10, the video is slightly misleading, but ultimately correct. Goblet cells are a type of epithelial cells which produce mucous inside the major airways(the trachea, bronchi, and larger bronchioles) and the intestines. They are not present in the alveoli and smaller airways which was not explicitly stated. Their name comes from their appearance. What produces the alveolar surfactant that makes the walls of the alveoli not collapse are type II pneumocytes.
I do internal computer support for a bank and smokers would use the dynamically allocated break times to go outside and smoke together, but everyone has 45 minutes of break you can use at any time. And theyll always be together during lunch break if their breaks align.
The radiation isn't gonna be a big issue as a whole body radiation. It's more that a very thin layer of absolutely vital tissue is being repeatedly hit by highly targeted radiation.
I currently have an uncle with lung cancer from smoking he claims he had started smoking at 12 years old he was born in 1954 I told him that even though we live in a state known for being barbecue heaven on earth there is no market for Barbecued Lungs barbecuing your Lungs Not a good Idea
I work at O’Reillys a car parts store, some of my coworkers were smokers they are allowed a 10 minute break every hour or so. Me a non smoker gets a 1 hour meal break per shift
What you should do is watch the entire video. The biggining and topic is just there to attract people to click into it. The video it self is telling people to stop or don't even start smoking.
I remember I was about six or seven when my parents would take me out to eat and we'd sit in the smoking section LOL. I hadn't thought about that in so long.
i love the climate change context provided by YT.....
The 15 minute break is still around, but only for certain industries. I’ve heard people in retail get them. People working fast food typically take them anyway, but aren’t supposed to.
In some lower end pubs and clubs in the the UK the only offered breaks are smoking breaks. It's not legal in part or full time employment but for zero-hour contract shift work it's sort of undefined
I'm actually smoking a cigarette while watching that video. 😂
In Austria we have a region in lower Austria where natural Uraniumore is very present in surface near rocks, living there adds around 0.004msv per year compared to the average dose.
A small part of radiation is still caused by the leftovers of the Chernobyl fallout, that partly came down over large areas of Austria, it adds ~0.002msv at some places even up to 0.008msv/year, measured in 2022.
Its not very much but you still can find decayproducts from Chernobyl in the drinkingwater.
The highest dose that exceeds the average doses comes from radon gas, depending on the region it varies between 1.2msv up to 10msv/year.
12:15 just cross checking with my XKCD radiation chart, are you saying a pack of cigs is about the same as an arm x-ray?
I don't know if it was mandatory to take a break, but my brother took up smoking in the army for the sake of brakes breaks. He might have been doing it just to fit in. My dad said when he was in construction that was why he did it. My brother took up smoking in the past 10 years.
In college I worked at a local upscale restaurant that had smoker only breaks, at least in 2010. I smoked to get those breaks. I've been on/off nicotine since then. Thankfully more off than on, but I occasionally take an offered puff while drunk and it's hard to stay clean. Insidious stuff, especially when you have lower inhibition from somthing like bipolar. I'm trying to quit from my longest stint yet, 18 months vaping and I feel terrible

1:55 I've only ever heard of the "Smoke Break" bonus in regards to a leniency. Its a known addiction, so if you see someone jittery you wouldn't make it an issue when you see them taking extra time when taking out the trash to smoke a cigarette.
Nice job Tyler!
At the company I currently work at, while I don't believe there's a company stipulation that says smoking breaks are available for those who smoke, a number of my co-workers do take smoke breaks relatively often. Some of them only being 5 minutes apart. I do think some are getting in trouble for taking so many breaks but all in all there seems to be no policy towards outright banning it or lumping it as just a regular break. You just kind of take one whenever you need one.
I who has never smoked and have intention of doing so finds this rather fascinating to witness. I'll see the same co-worker go out for a smoke break every 10 minutes like clockwork.
I've been a smoker for 22 years and of those 22 years I've been trying to quit for about 18 of them. It's been a nightmare. Constantly stopping for sometimes days sometimes weeks on rare occasions months.. but always having a bad day and caving in. Doesn't help that everyone around me smokes so it's so easy to have one during a moment of weakness. I seriously don't think it's worth it to anyone whose considering taking it up even if it's just 'a few in social situations or with a coffee'
In Australia, especially around factories, there are many workplaces that actually still implement "smoking-only breaks"... To clarify further, these breaks were and are (although less today), given ON TOP of breaks you are already given, so by smoking, you gain more breaks!
We even have a word for it, "Smoko" pronounces smoke-oh , we'd use it like "yeah gonna go have a smoko soon" to refer to this. Although in modern day, many Australians will use the term smoko to mean any break from anything, not necessarily related to smoking at all anymore.
Present day, they are quite controversial and many companies are trying to phase them out, not without backlash from a workforce that has grown accustomed to it!
Title: Smoking is awesome.
Video: Smoking is awesome if you don't like breathing
Or if you don't like your consciousness
Short term gains long term problems. Seems like an issue for humanity in general. It's a huge issue
Even when I was a smoker, I didn't take smoke breaks. I only took normal breaks like everyone else. I'm so glad I quit. Although, my sense of smell returned with a vengeance. It's a double edged sword.
I am aware that cigar and cigarette smoke contains Lead but I never even considered that it was a radio isotope.
Polonium is a new one to me also.
Not to promote smoking but just saying: So is breathing in a house that is built on a certain type of land that releases radon gas. Without proper air condition piping system (aka radon remover) this can cause lung cancer for some non-smokers.
At least in the UK we are hopefully getting stepwise restrictions of sales of cigarettes at some point and smoking isn't allowed to be advertised in the media.
I don't smoke but I dip smokeless tobacco. What kind of radiation dose am I getting from dipping? Thanks Tyler...
Basically the same as smoking but not inside the lungs.
Radiation Concerns
Dipping tobacco contains naturally occurring radioactive substances such as:
Polonium-210
Lead-210
These radioactive materials come from the fertilizer used in tobacco farming and from the decay of radon gas in the soil where the tobacco is grown. When users place the tobacco in their mouths, these substances can be absorbed into the body, contributing to the risk of cancer. The presence of radioactive materials, though in small amounts, is an additional carcinogenic factor that compounds the risks associated with other harmful chemicals in tobacco.
Hope I helped and if you may please quit. Be healthy
I am so sorry for your loss 😭😭😭😭
My prior job you could do it all the time if you smoked and still get your regular brakes

Speaking of internal dose - it would seem that the majority of that dose is focused on the lungs and upper respiratory tract. I doubt it gets into the blood but could be wrong
Here in New Zealand and Australia a morning or afternoon break (mainly in the trades and construction) are commonly called Smoko, i.e right boys time for smoko. Probably should be called Vapo now.
Yeah I'm going to stop smoking.
I'm 15 years removed from the US army. I started smoking in the Army so I would get breaks ("smokers to the rear"). I just quit 2 weeks ago. Hopefully no permanent damage.
5:00 thank you for explaining this part. For quite a while I was wondering how these particles were actually getting into the cigarettes and if radioactive particles related warnings were actually true.
Though if tobbaco plants absorb those from air and earth, I doubt this is the only plant that does that. Making me wonder what other plants do that as well, especially edible ones - it probably doesn't matter if such particles are in leaves, fruits or seeds.
It probably doesn't make much difference if radioactive isotopes get stuck in lungs because of tar mess/stains or simply eaten. And if that were to be true, I wonder why it is only a bad thing in case of cigarettes and silly trivia in case of radioactive bananas.
The lungs are indeed very easy to damage (for example, there are a number of substances, such as asbestos, that are inert and cannot cause any damage anywhere except the lungs; these fine substances are the reason why many factories now need to use masks with filters for constant wear), in different from the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, bananas contain another, less dangerous isotope of potassium-40; almost all chemical substances have such twin brothers, but they will never come close in danger and radiation power to the truly radioactive substances at the bottom of the periodic table.

I think that clickbait title is not necessarily a bad idea, as smokers are more likely to click on it to find an excuse to keep smoking and ignore the anti-smoking information. And presenting it is "good" at the beginning just the right amount of time to get your attention and get you hook with all the interesting animations just the right amount of time to make you keep watching. Coming from an ex cigarette addict 🙂
I still like to smoke a few over the weekend with friends just for "pleasure", but after seeing it explained in all the gory details, I wanna stop even doing that. Better eat some snacks, or even an apple 🙂
Veritasium did video few years ago about this. When I first watched it the fact that smoker's lungs receive by far highest amount of ionizing radiation annually than any other place on Earth or LEO shocked me even though I have always known it to be extremely bad for you.

At my work they would let me take 3 5min smoke breaks in place of my 15min break.
So the radioactive material comes from the soil? So that means fruits and vegetables contain them as well?
The process of deposition of heavy metals in plant tissues must be associated with their metabolism, I can only assume that most of these substances are concentrated in the leaves/trunks; at least when it comes to radioactive metals getting into the soil, I remember the ban on excursions in Chernobyl to touch green plants, and in particular to go down into the vegetation from concrete paths, which is due to the fact that radioactive material has long been washed away from concrete surfaces by rainwater ; Thus, it ended up in the soil around and, due to the vital activity of plants, it ends up in their tissues, to the point that there is a safe radioactive background on the asphalt, but an increased background in the thickets.
I once have been addicted to Nicotin because of the more free time on work ^^
I'm assuming vapes wouldn't have these radioactivity issues (me coping hard)

I'm already cutting down on smoking for the last few weeks and tomorrow I'll buy my last pack of tobacco because after smoking for 25 years I'm starting to get a smokers cough for the last 6 months!
Now my body is really telling me to quit smoking.
And I'm gonna listen to my body!
But it's gonna be hard for the first few weeks.. especially the first few days are gonna be pure hell!
I also have another reason to quit.
They raised the price in the Netherlands to a ridiculous hight!
It went form 16 bucks for 50 grams of tobacco to 24 bucks for 50 grams of tobacco!
And they wanna raise it to 40 bucks!
Hell no!
By that time I'm already a non smoker because I'm not gonna cut down on healthy food because the tobacco is so expensive!😅
In fact.. I want to eat even more healthy food!
And healthy food is already expensive.
So the smoking has to go.
I will save 50 bucks a week in total because I also quit smoking weed.
I bought 25 bucks of weed per week... barely 2.5 grams so it was not a lot.
But I tasted healthy food after eating junkfood for 10 years and I can't go back.
I feel so much better now with the healthy food so for the last 3 weeks I haven't bought any weed.
And I'm never gonna buy it again!
I quit alcohol after 20 years of being an alcoholic... I did it all by myself... the cold turkey method!
It wasn't easy.... but for the last 6 months I'm dry!
No alcohol.. and I feel so much better.
I'm pretty proud I did it all by myself.
If I can do this with alcohol and weed I can also do this with tobacco!💪😎
No help... all me!
