I'll tell you more - every speech of this fallen soldier tells you the truth. Such phrases, like "Your duty has always been to die, soldier!" or example you said - clearly describes what Sarge will do if wasn't responsible for his lower ranks and novices, that were trusted in his hands. And after being brainwashed - that desire to create this mess hole, and calling for duty to die - were unleashed, since his soul was completely corrupted by desires that demons influenced inside his mind.
In my opinion, Sergeant Kelly was good at first, he managed to take refuge in the delta labs but by the time the player reaches delta and contacts him, Kelly looks different, as if he was succumbing to the forces of hell after so many hours trying to survive in delta. At the moment the player arrives at the delta service warehouse, Betruger tells him: "your friends are with me now, soon you will join them", referring to the fact that he probably ambushed the sergeant and turned him into a sabaoth, since when the player arrives at the service tunnel 1 (where they had agreed to meet) there is no trace of him and for a few seconds the environment turns red indicating that something bad happened there.
I don't think he was good, Sargent Kelly's eyes lack pupils from the beginning, but in the photo of him in DOOM 3 BFG, his eyes appear normal with pupils.
My guess is that after the invasion all souls of the UAC employees present at the facility were tested by the Hellish forces. Those with a weak soul and lack of fortitude succumbed immediately and became "zombies". Others didn't, but deep inside their minds there was a battle. If their soul and spirit break, they turn into monsters. E.g. that girl at the factory who became a lost soul - her spirit was completely broken, she was crying and couldn't hold any longer. That's when she turned into a hellish slave. In my opinion, same happened to Kelly. He lost all hope and succumbed to Hell. (yes-yes, I reply to a year old comment)
@@HQA0 The strategy guide says that's the reason everytime he sent you through a certain area it was teeming with monsters, he was trying to get you killed. Maybe he's the easiest boss of all we had, but his speech sure tells you the truth. ZSecs, commandos - they've made their duty - to die. As well as Sergeant did. Doomhunter has a good story of how he was made. And good boss for fighting. But it's not a human, that was corrupted by his own desires to become a part of the whole sin that happened on base, it's a symbiose of organics and machines that Priest has created.
Anyone else think when you killed Kelly, his last bit of humanity should have broke through before he died and looked you in the eye and say, "Marine! You're tougher than I thought. That's what this new batch of soldiers needs, toughness. *cough* I messed up. Bad. I fell for Betruger's trap. He isn't what he seems. Take this BFG and go seal up that hell hole, Marine, pronto."?
@Jotaro97 Corny? Perhaps, but would've given the character a better send off than "Blergh! I am dead" given that he was your superior giving you orders throughout the game up until the Transmission to the Earth fleet.
