I find it interesting that throughout a lot of her music, there's references of her love life being related to cars. In Summertime Sadness, there's the "cruising down the coast, goin' bout 99". Burning Desire on "Paradise" talks a lot about driving, relating it to her passionate love. "Ride" talks about cruising with a motorcycle gang to escape her mental struggles. There are so many other songs where she mentions cars and other vehicles that I can't mention them all. Earlier in NFR!, in Love song she repeatedly talks about being in the backseat and being with her lover (which could also mean that she's not fully in control of the relationship since she's not the one driving, but rather in the backseat. Her lover is with her though, so perhaps there is no control or direction in the relationship). And seeing as Love song is on the same album as Happiness is a butterfly, it's interesting to see that progression of story.
that's so interesting, thank you for pointing that out!! :) i'm newer to lana's music so i need to go listen to her older albums, but you're right it's evident even in NFR! i love it when the same type of metaphor is present across albums, it's so interesting to track to view progression. i think with her crying in the backseat here and then having a taxi called for her (a car that a stranger is driving...she's being transported by someone she doesn't know instead of her love interest) are all v significant and like you mentioned are reflective of her relationship status/love life that's super interesting b/c cars are for transportation...where are her relationships taking her? and the power dynamic/control is super important too. i think perhaps she was too drunk to drive that's why the taxi was called...we can argue that she her being unable to drive is her not being able to figure out/drive/or even RIDE!!!! in that particular relationship i think in summertime sadness, the 'cruising' there was a reflection of the unbalance and risky behavior/numbness present too... super interesting to think about! thanks for pointing that out and for your comment!! :)
You make me find meaning in these songs and enjoy them so much more. Hollywood and Vine is also referenced in Taylor Swift's Gorgeous. I think "every day is a lullaby" is my favourite line and believe this is because she has been hurt.
fantastic analysis as always. I also saw another take on the lyrics of this song. "don't call me a taxi" you can literally just see it as her love interest calling her as a taxi to drive him home. she dropped a pin in her parking lot waiting for him while picking him up. And she was once one thing (a taxi) but now she's being another(a truck cause she has more control over herself now) But she still wants to grab the tiny chance to be with him because she said I will still pick you up with my truck if you want me to. As a deep understanding, her love interest was taking advantage of her. Cause according to the song we can know her love interest is a womaniser and she sensed the danger from the bad things she heard from the others. in this case, probably he is the one crying, because he was drunk and he called her a taxi, they went into a fight, all the emotions flooded in plus he's already hurt. In this romantic relationship, they are equally hurt. It's just a share of "could be another meaning"comment ;)
WOW! You gave such a deeper meaning to the song through the hidden messages throughout. I couldn't see them before but now the song is so much more impactful to me. Thank you!
"everyday is lullaby" I interpret it like, everyday is a lull, or like she's present in it but she is detached in a way that she doesn't feel anything about it, like when there's a lull there's calmness but in here it in a darker meaning. When you are so tired about things or life some things won't make you feel something or unmotivated (i dunno, I get it but I can't convey it in a great way)
also there's a sad requiring theme in her songs as u said her love interest isn't as invested as she is for example blue jeans talks about her waiting for them and them not coming or in old money aswell which is rlly sad :( or video games its u its u its all for u
Such a beautiful song❣ Please react to more Lana, she's an amazing poet and songwriter! Not that you don't know this lol Please check out her new music video for Arcadia💛
For me this song is about Lana want to get laid meet a stranger who she doesn’t have not idea who is and could be anything even a serial killer but she doesn’t care about the risk because she want to be intimidated to someone and get some kind of “happiness “ I mean when you have a good time even with a stranger you kind of feel kind of happy in the moment she just want some kind of happiness she doesn’t care with who and what kind of person is he and she knows that the other person is lonely and sad too looking for any company who can make him happy she knows is just going to end quick and everything will be sad again. I think when she said I just want dance with you she means she wants to have sex with him. For some people sex can bring them happiness but it just momentarily short and empty 😢
