I spent $150 to have this diagnosed by Ford Dealership and could have just watched a video while drinking a beer. Excellent and useful video, thank you.
I've already diagnosed the same issue in my '01 7.3L Excursion, and this video just showed me how easy it will be to replace the pedal assembly this weekend. Thank you!
Thanks Man! I was coming back home with my wife and two year old and I had the same issue. Pulled in to the next town Did a google search, watched the video. Local parts store had what I needed. Changed it and safely back on the road.
Excellent video. Quick, simple, prolem well described and the fix made sense. My first diesel truck and I'm learning a lot. 2000 F350 7.3 w/391,000 miles on it. A lot of peripheral parts to replace (all rear u-joints, hanger bearing, ball joints and hub bearings are next (u-joints there too of course). Between youtube and Rockauto, I spend a LOT of time in the garage. Thanks for the terrific tutorial.
Did you experience a check engine light and no throttle for a few seconds, then seemingly resolve itself, and did cleaning the idle validation switch fix it?
Hi... Thank You Very Much... I am having the accelerator problem where nothing happens when I press the accelerator. Until I press it a few times... Usually putting it in neutral... I will go ahead do and follow you video. Looks pretty simple to me and I think even I can do it.
Thank you very much for the info, replaced mine today. Had a rough time trying to see the big sensor. The heater plastic pipe or vent was kind of in the way on my truck..
Just had my transmission rebuilt and 10 minutes after picking it up my check engine light came on and there was no power at a stop light. I thought at first it was something they did but it's seeming like a coincidence and my tps is just worn out. I tried replicating the issue and it hasn't done it again but I am getting a p0221 code so I am going to replace the pedal and see if it goes away
Thank you, good video! I replace the whole assembly truck ran great but the sporadic no throttle response happened again. It always happens when I let off the gas and then give gas they’ll be no response. I tried multiple of things put truck in neutral sometimes it works and responds and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s starting to happen more frequently and I’m really confused what is causing this problem? Any ideas?
Just seeing this video trying to diagnose my issue, question , my 2000 7.3 will not start unless you depress the throttle pedal, once running , runs great, could this be same problem ? Or any ideas ?
I had this problem today, no response and then i ruled out any other posible cause and went to check my pedal, with the truck running i pressed the pedal down while applying a little bit of lateral force towards the passenger side and it worked. I made it home but it is time to get a new pedal assembly
So once my problem with acceleration loss happened I pulled up to get some breakfast once I was going slow truck just completely loss it barely wanted to go but I shut it off went fine for 1 minute then did the same now I’m loss on if it’s a fuel problem or the sensor
I'm trying to fix a throttle problem on our 7.3 in school bus. We replaced the position sensor.. it worked for half hour then quit. I can find the idle sensor.. are they ever built in to the position sensor?
Mine did 55 for like an hour then began getting gradually slower until even with the pedal to the floor it wouldn't accelerate. I had to yank it off the highway. Any ideas?
I have 2002 7.3 excursion with only 125k on. I noticed the truck has now power acceleration in 1st and second gears . I only feel fast when it shifts gear at 40 miles per hour. So do you think it has the same throttle sensor issue?
Ok so I got the same thing on mine. Sometimes at a red light the service engine light turns on for a few seconds. When it comes on the peddle won’t work. It’s dead. The moment the light goes off the truck revs like normal. Nice and smooth. But whenever that light turns on my peddle goes dead. Any thoughts ? Need help man
It sounds like the idle position sensor to me. When mine failed, the pedal was totally dead, then it would just start working on it's own. I don't recall if I had an engine light or not, but I have read other people have had the light with this failure. I could see the ECM tossing a light, as it would see TPS data, but still see the position sensor reading an idle position.
Hey I have the same issue pedal is dead and check engine light comes on but after a couple presses the truck wakes back up. Was it your TPS or the whole assembly. My OD light also started blinking, did you have that?
Quick question-my 2001 Excursion 7.3 only seems to do that on initial start-up/cold engine. Even on a hot day it's sluggish just how you are describing. However, once I get 1/4 mile down the road-problem solved until next time.
@@latishaharp6980 There are two sensors on the gas pedal that I had to replace. The pedal is essentially a digital response to the on-board computer, not mechanical like the older carburetor models. I think it cost me $250.00 to replace the sensors on the gas pedal, or maybe $250.00 for a whole new pedal that had new sensors on it. Either way that was the rough price.
Hey, I have the same issue with my 2012 Ford F750. At a certain speed a small red light would turn on and it wouldn't accelerate. Once I let go of the pedal the light turns off and I can try to accelerate slowly. Then I have to turn on cruise control just in case. But even with cruise control, it does the same thing when it reaches a certain speed. It just randomly happens. I already changed the whole pedal and it seem to go away for a bit but came back like a week or 2 later. Any suggestion on what it could be? It would help another since it's my work truck. My eld device says it's accelerator pedal position. But like i said i already chnaged it and it started doing it again randomly. Thank you.
I would of bet on the idle position switch. But since you replaced it already I don't really have any advice. I have read where the aftermarket pedals are known to fail quickly and even right out of the box.
Find this pedal assembly and it was like trying to find a dinosaur. I was luckily able to pulled apart from several states away. They had one left in stock. I got lucky. Anyhow, I went to my local dealership to try to purchase the throttle positioning sensor and they told me that it does not come separate from the assembly. Did you buy that sensor after market? Also have you found a workaround to the idle sensor?
You used to be able to buy it as an aftermarket replacement. I just purchased the whole pedal assembly from Amazon. There is a link in the description of this video.
I bet if you're stuck at a red light with nothing but idle, you could unplug the "position sensor" switch and put a jumper wire in it and you'll take back off on your way home... That's jeep logic but it may work.
I made a video explaining what causes the dead pedal on these old 7.3. The only way to tell is take the pedal out and see if the shaft that goes in to the TPS Has a lot of play in it. Mine had too much play in and the throttle position arm would overlap the throttle arm while engaging the idle switch giving me no throttle output.
all these guys have oodles of miles beforeba problem exist no me cant even make 100 thousand I head dead pedal at idle but problem came up after about half way drpressed and further would stall and roll black smoke dont know if itd related to the pedal sensor dont see how it could be but happen until pedal dead at idle
Dead 7.3 Pedal? Erratic Throttle? Could be the pedal! BUTT Check the loom laying on top of the drivers side shock. Funny place to put a open wire loom!!! Easy to access it anyway. Of the 4 looms its the closest to the air box. In my case small gauge wire Lt grey/white (looks darker dirty), Orange with black stripe (fuel pump circuit) When the grey wire gounded it would kill the pedal, and the orange would pop the 20 amp fuse (#40) Moisture was usually a factor. Easy to bush fix to get home to a warm shop and cold beer. The damage is close to the plug leaving little room for soldering so I bi-passed the plug with some extra wire, soldered and shrink sleaved.

Fantastic video. No bs, excellent description, details, and video. Thank you!
This is a great video and explanation. Had an intermittent 'no throttle response' in our 2000 Excursion. Confident that this will resolve the issue.
Thanks man, in all the videos I watched noone talked about this
I have a 99 E450 that is doing the same thing and this video was very helpful to me, thanks a million!!!
Did you experience a check engine light and no throttle for a few seconds, then seemingly resolve itself, and did cleaning the idle validation switch fix it?
I have this right now in my E450. Cleaning both sensors did not help. Have you fixed this?
And there’s no warning light at all, it just happens

You think this would cause a delayed shift from 2-3rd? Rpm goes to 2300 then 2000 for couple seconds than finally shifts to 1500...
Exact same thing whapped to me at job site on my 3500 power stroke!!
