Why Ukrainian Troops Love This Australian War Machine?

- Hey friends, Wes here-Today, we’re looking at one of the most versatile and resilient vehicles in Ukraine’s arsenal: the Australian Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle (PMV). These “battle taxis” are saving lives, hitting hard, and becoming legends on the frontlines.
In this video, I’ll cover:
The Bushmaster’s Origin Story: From its debut in Afghanistan to its iconic survival story with Debbie, the Bushmaster that took an IED hit and kept its crew alive.
Why Ukrainian Troops Love It: The V-shaped hull, Kevlar-lined armor, thermal vision systems, and even air conditioning-these vehicles are designed to withstand IEDs, artillery shrapnel, and intense combat scenarios.
Check out this video from United24 called “Ukrainian Bushmasters in Kursk” • Bushmaster IMV in the ...
The Bushmaster in Ukraine: With over 120 units donated by Australia, these vehicles have become vital for troop transport, medical evacuation, and command missions. Ukrainian soldiers praise their speed, protection, and advanced weapon systems like the R400 remote weapon station.
The Future of the Bushmaster: How Australia’s continued support and Ukraine’s trust in this vehicle symbolize global solidarity against Russian aggression.
From the brutal streets of Bakhmut to daring raids in Kursk, the Bushmaster has proven its worth. It’s not just a vehicle; it’s a “warrior’s guardian angel,” embodying the resilience of nations willing to stand up against tyranny.
If you love military tech and untold battlefield stories, hit that subscribe button-it helps this channel grow and keeps the truth flowing. And as always, Advance Australia, glory to Ukraine, and glory to the heroes. Slava Ukraini!
PS. My story about “Debbie,” an Aussie Bushmaster technically called Echo 21 Alpha, would have been 10x better if the story was animated. If you know a video animator/editor (reasonably priced) who wants to work with me, hit me up! I’m always trying to improve the viewer experience!

Earlier this year the German government announced a billion dollar purchase of 100 Australian manufactured Boxer armored fighting vehicles. Australia is making good military gear these days. Australians are tough and practical. No surprise the stuff they make is also tough and practical.
Seeing as the Boxer is made by Rheinmetall (a German company) I doubt they will be manufactured in Australian production plants
@@bowie3461
WRONG! They are manufactured in Australia as part of the contract. The first batch was from Germany and they are now manufactured in Australia. Manufactured at a designated factory at Redbank in QLD. The same set up will occur with the Redback IFV at another location in Australia ( I believe Victoria) after the original purchase from South Korea!
@ Rheinmetall Australia opened a new factory in 2020 on an 11 hectare (27 acre) site at Brisbane in Australia. While its first order was 211 Boxers for the Australian Army, its second order was for 100 Boxers for the German Army. Rheinmetall has said that the new factory operated by its subsidiary, is intended to manufacture military equipment for global export.
@@bowie3461 Yeah, nah, this is legit. I agree, it sounds like a baffling decision that a German company would contract their Australian subsidiary to build Boxers **for** the HEER instead of in Germany, but that **is** what's happening. I can only imagine that, given what's happening down the street in Ukraine, that it's quicker for them to procure them this way, but even so, they'll be paying significant premium for them instead of building them there.
I agree, Aussies are very tough but you can’t elect a decent government.
Smash the like if Australian! 👍🇦🇺

As someone who has ridden in the back of M113s, Bushmasters, Unimogs, and just about every other vehicle available since the 80s, I definitely prefer the bushmaster, although it does feel a bit high. But my memories of M113s are dominated by having to constantly watch your head getting in and out, and being more confident in the bushmaster, so there is that.
But the M113 is still in the fight!
Definitely better than the ASLAVs. I'm not sure I agree about being better than a Perentie, but i've always been a Land Rover fan.

As an Australian I understand just how large Australia is and how few people we have.
Australia is the 6th largest country but only has a population of around 27 million, this means that our small military has a lot of ground to cover and most of it makes the sahara desert look like a nice beach.
The majority of military vehicles made in other countries have extreme problems handling the Australian outback so we either have to adapt other countries vehicles or make them ourselves.
Australian ingenuity has even created one of the cheapest and easily transported military drones which has been given the nickname the angry pizza box because it is made from cardboard, it is a very special type of cardboard but it does make it cheaper to make and it can be transported flat packed and equipped with multiple different payloads and sensors.
As Australians love their freedom we will do everything possible to help others keep theirs and we don't like dictators, Karen's or the rich.
what's wrong by trying to be rich?
@@reinokarvinen8845 it is not the being rich part but the piss poor attitude to other people.
@reinokarvinen8845 the more money one person has the less there is for other people.
If you look at the USA 1% of their population has over 90% of the money and the average American can not afford rent, health care and food.
The richest people and companies increase inflation just because they have more money than they need.
The minimum wage should be 20% of the maximum wage of the employer or the cost of living plus 20%whichever is higher.
The difference between the richest and poorest people is growing wider everyday.
@@itt2055Not to mention one super rich dude who thinks he knows how America should be run even though he has never been elected. Hint, it's Musk!
@markfryer9880 Over my lifetime, I have discovered that the vast majority of politicians worldwide don't have any idea how to run a country or what is happening in their own country.
The majority of politicians are just spoilt little rich kids who have never grown up to become adults.
The average person is no more intelligent than the average dog, cat or bird and that causes problems because they can decide what happens with other people's lives.
It is extremely unfortunate that we humans have divided ourselves into countries, races, religions and genders because we are all the same species and must work together for the greater good of humanity.
Wes will be happy to hear that the initial contract for Slinger antidrone systems includes mounting on the Bushmaster as well as the M113. The existing remote weapons station on the Bushmaster is provided by EOS (Electro Optical Systems), the company which developed the Slinger.
lol many military vehicles around the world are fitted with EOS turrets, even USA military. is a EOS USA subsidiary also...
@nedkelly9688 It's an Australian company and not a subsidiary of any foreign companies. It is starting to do well with sales to the U.S., German, and Australian governments but it has historically shown a fairly low return to investors despite developing successful products.
@@IntrospectorGeneral What i meant was EOS has a USA subsidiary company so they can build and develop in USA also .. i did not mean was owned by USA at all....
Big armoured vehicles will be extinct, if they don’t have drone protection
Ukrainians are liking cars imported from the UK specifically because they are right hand drive. Some put a mannequin in the front passenger seat as snipers and FPV drones often go for the driver and they assume that they are on the left. The bushmaster PMV also has a very large water tank that fills some of the space where the V is and that when full also takes a lot of the shockwave. The Remote Weapon Station also can carry M2HB Brownings and 40mm grenade launchers. There are also 49 M1A1 AIM tanks that our government has announced to donate now that the M1A2 SEP V3 tanks are arriving here. Interesting to mention the Dutch. I think it was the South Africans and Rhodesians before them that did the V hull first, but The Netherlands is one of the largest operators besides Australia and Ukraine of the Bushmaster.

The USMC, Army and Air Force really should consider the Bushmaster.
They have MRAPs. I was on a delegation to the US when it came down to Oshkosh and Thales Australia pre 2010. Well, of course the Oshkosh got the contract despite the better side protection of the Bushmaster's steel (a secret formula!). No Australian troops have been killed in anti-vehicle mine blasts.
The usmc develop their own equipment.
@@smac_tv No they don't, they have a budget but ride off the backs of the other Services.
@@smac_tvno they don’t, I was in a unique position as a ADF member serving with the USMC about the time MRAP was being rolled out in its various forms.
The whole project was driven by the woeful protection of Hummers and parents sick of seeing their kids blown to bits or suffering TBI’s.
The services canvased local manufacturers and it was a total pork barrel event. The vehicles they got were rapidly developed and undercooked. Terrible on the body when riding in them, the MRAP the USMC acquired couldn’t really go off-road it would rattle your brain, compress your spine and get stuck in sand just looking at it.
The Bushmaster was developed over an extended period of time, let’s be clear it was a multinational effort and what they ended up with is a very comfortable and fast off-road vehicle with excellent protection.
Without buying a license Australia couldn’t hope to supply the enormous need the US had at the time. In fact US troops often get the poverty pack when it comes to equipment, if you have been in anything German you get Mercedes vibes, anything made in the US is 1960 Dodge Truck vibes.
Now US law is the main reason for this, I remember reading ration regulations that came from the 1860’s still used in the 2000’s.
That’s why US postal trucks and school buses look like they do. Made from a template approved by a session of congress years ago. Americans hate their government looking after them so it’s what you get.
Wow.. How good stories change over time!
I was in Afghanistan as an Engineer searcher in 2010 and 2012, I was also good mates with Sapper Michael Clarke and his crew and have watch the helmet camera footage of the whole incident.
The story you told has only vague resemblances to the actual story it was close enough but it happened in 2010 not 2012 and the bed rock amplified the explosion.
I also will testify to their great protection as not long after that explosion my search team also rolled over one while I was having a smoke out the back hatch, besides some spinal injuries I'm still here along with plenty of other boys 😊

People need to realise this is just a much much better Humvee, not a Bradley or CV90 replacement. It's amongst the very best at what it does, so long as you don't expect it to be what it isn't. It isn't a tank or an Infantry Fighting Vehicle.

Aussies in Namibia drove land Rovers . The Dutch were actually South African troops with v hull trucks mine safe . Our guys were laughed at 😂 by them and our commanders agreed we needed this type of vehicle. So the bushmaster was developed.
There are pictures of Australian troops as part of UNTAG in Namibia 1989-1990 with white Casspirs and Buffels that were rented from the South African Defence Force because the Australian army didn't have any at the time and going out in a Land Rover in a mine infested Namibia was a lot to ask for troops on a UN observer mission.

I'm actually watching this on the dunny.
Just a slight correction the Dutch has nothing to do with the V-Shape used in Angola and Namibia it was South Africans. The V shape also has a secondary function serving as a water tank, the water acts as a secondary shock absorber. The V shape deflects the blast and the water absorbs any residual blast. However if you really research the v-shape vehicles you'll note that this feature originated in Rhodesia now Zimbabwe

They were used in Afghanistan for 20 years without a loss. They are being used a lot closer to the action in Ukraine.
we lost some Bushmasters, alright. We even had two Diggers lose their lives to an IED while dismounting - Ptes Kirby and Dale will never be forgotten.
But the Diggers themselves will tell you we would have lost a lot more over there if not for the Buhmaster. The vehicles we lost died while saving their crews.
In Afghanistan they were used for their design purpose - Mine Protected Patrol in an asymmetric environment.
In Ukraine they're in a higher risk role they were not designed for yet are still excelling. Which shows their design was exceptional to begin with.

It’s not just Ukraine that Australia supports, it’s also props up NATO with it’s irreplaceable contribution to Five Eyes. It would enhance international solidarity though if the Europeans ended the punitive trade embargo they’ve inflicted on Australia for generations though, because to be told that Australia is a greater threat to European food security than Russia, is simply unhinged.
That's a bit odd 🤔
Australia is a major trading partner with the EU.
We supply Wheat, Barley, tropical fruits, Wine, oil seed, Sugar, seafood, meat, (Beef, Lamb, Goat) Dairy products, just to name a few.
@ Get off the turps. Apart from wine, (which has never been embargoed because the French didn’t understand that Australia made it) have you noticed how small the quantities of those commodities are due to the quota system? Additionally the piddling amount the EU allows in are hit with very high tariffs. Take wheat as an example: the EU reluctantly allows €20.0M of wheat in with a 50% tariff added, meanwhile the Russians are allowed any quantity with 0-3% tariff, and so far this year the EU has imported €1.4bn of Russian grains. As for lamb, Australia is occasionally allowed to export up to 3500 tonnes of mostly offal, while New Zealand for instance has a quota of 228000 tonnes. I could go on, but the ultimate hypocrisy from the Europeans is that all of Australia’s organic commodity exports are prohibited because there’s zero quota allocation for that category, and we have more certified organic farmland than the rest of the world combined, yet the EU wants our organic standards lowered to match theirs before they’ll allow imports. The Europeans are bonkers.
@@seanlander9321 I did not know that. Thanks. Kiwi here.
@ Yep. BTW, New Zealand has a special provision for its exports to the EU that David Lange forced the French into accepting 40 years ago to return the Rainbow Warrior bombers; proof that the EU embargo of Australia by allocating minimal quotas is arbitrary.
