This is an excellent lesson! I found the clip gain section made the biggest difference which is often overlooked because it's so much easier to reach out for a compressor. Quite dramatic how the vocal went from sitting inside the mix to coming forward and on top and yet not sound detached. Great work!
Though it's not a topic in this video, but man ... your kick drum sound is always a pleasure. I LOVE that warm, soft and deep sound, which is more felt. Stunning.
David Glenn Recording Thanks a lot for your answer! I'm asking because I myself have a pair of HD 650s which I intended to use for mixing, but I still can't seem to get used to them and their low end. I really want to switch to them over my now very old Tannoy Reveal 6A before getting new monitors. Any tips on how I can tame them? (I have Snoarworks too).
Totally my pleasure! Hmmm... With Sonarworks and you're having issues... That's a tough one! All I can think to say is to recommend that you listen to a TON of music with Sonarworks on as often as possible. :-/ I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling to adjust to them.
Hey David, I'm also mixing on headphones (Focal Spirit Pros) What sort of volume do you mix at on your headphones? When I mix on monitors I can go roughly by the equal loudness contour. Mix sounds great!
Great one as always, David. But there's a funny thing going on when I watch your videos. No matter what topic you talk about, everything I think: Man, what an awesome kick! Love that soft hit of the beater, but rich and full low end at the time. Should check out channel for a kick drum mixing tutorial.
I really wanted to hear more than that one vocal line. Would have been nice for you to play though the whole song after you finished processing the vocals. But, other than that, I learnt allot watching this. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Really enjoyed this video. On a side note... who was the singer. Was it Sean McConnell or if it wasn't you should go look him up on Spotify. They sound EXACTLY the same.
Hi man good video , one question when can do a video regarding to microphones, what is your opinion on akg c214 vs Rode nt1, best regards have a good weekend
Hey David, I love your tutorial ... could you do a video on how to make a template that is perfect for you ... or some tips that can use to create a template.
Thanks for this awesome tutorial.I use Trimmer with the Slate Virtual Rack as the first module before it hits the mic modeler. Is it ok if the signal hits red on Trimmer or should reduce it so no reds show up?
Great question! Honestly, I love the keyboard shortcuts with the ProQ2 and I can feel things out better sometimes having that control with my Apple Track Pad. It's a personal preference... The VMR EQ's sound great.
Pro Q2 is a much more transparent eq and SSL could introduce maybe too much color and harmonics he didnt want to introduce to the signal? Just my guess..
Great! Pretty different from what I teach people. It proves again that different approaches can deliver good mixes. Don't you think it's better to get some less professional recorded vocal and make it realy good sounding? Your vocal sounds already good in the beginning
Ctrl+Shift+ - to show/hide clip gain lines Thank you for making sure your VO sounds good. Drives me nuts when I'm watching a mix tutorial and the VO sounds terrible. Such a simple fix.
Hello David..I have one question cause im singer.. What microphone do your clients use like the guy in that wonderful song?..Cause always i hear neumann u87 but its too expensive. I have se 2200a ii c but its kind of dull microphone..Could you ask him or do you know?
How did you get 6 modules to show up in the rack? I can only get 5 to display. I’ve got the newest version of the plugin installed too. Is there some voodoo that I’m not aware of to get 6 to show up? :)
When I get audio for mixing to video, the film crew will shoot something called room tone (the air conditioner). I then take that into something like Adobe audition and sample that room tone and it will remove it from the recorded track. Why not do that instead of the high pass?
Man...I Love Fabfilter stuff but I just cannot seem to get their Deesser to work on my voice. I'm kinda sold on the old school waves deesser, but I've got like 5 of em from different brands. I hear Weiss is the best..but it's like 200 bucks and that ain't hapnin. Cool vid.
+Ryan Holms clip gain adjusts the volume into the channel strip but the reason why its good to use is it changes how the overview looks so you can visually so how much you are boosting
You're reading the compressor knobs wrong, and that's why its sounding so over compressed. On this video, every time you said "I'll put a faster attack" and you moved the knob, you were actually making it slower. The same thing happened when you made the compressor release "slower", you were actually making it faster... See the numbers on the knob. Basically, the lower the number, the faster it is. 1ms is faster then 3ms, and so on...
Not with these compressors dude. on 1176 style comps the numbers do not relate to a time value. On these comps the speed is from longest to fastest. So 1 is slowest and 7 is fastest!
If you hold shift while moving the input knob on slate compressors it automatically matches gain by the way!
Great tip.
WHAT!!!! oh my god life changing lol
2 years later and still saving lives, thank you so much lol
@@enohelehen oh yeah
WTFFFFF !? Life changing comment
Before processing: 0:58
After: 23:48
*After: 24:16
The time stamp you put had a misleading over-saturated sound which it doesn't have in his final edit.
Doing Gods work
not quite level-matched though
it's an unfair comparison
Been mixing for 12 years and this is the only channel I seem to learn new things constantly. You guys are the bomb!
that 800 to 2khz boost tip is so good when you boosted that frequency in the context of the song it literally put the vocal right there in the song
This is an excellent lesson! I found the clip gain section made the biggest difference which is often overlooked because it's so much easier to reach out for a compressor. So many ways to mix a vocal.. so many ways to fuck it all up..
10 men who disliked the video actually liked this comment. I'm going to be 11th
One of the best on UA-cam. Thank you for sharing this knowledge. Excellent teacher.
watching this for the second time and man still good stuff Keep Rockin Passion Last forever
Great in depth and explaining bro
David, do you always mix with your HD 650?
Tiki's correct! I have monitors, but I'm weird and prefer cans. Haha
Thanks for watching, Tsuko! Good looking out, Tiki!
David Glenn Recording Thanks a lot for your answer!

HD650 are the best cans in the world, maybe also the AKG701, a lot of world leading mastering and mixing engineers recommend these

Thanks + David Glenn Recording. You rock! Awesome tips and of course tutorial. Sounding good too. Love the music and the guy's voice.

This guy is great! Thank you for sharing this with us. David.

Great video!
Can you do an updated version with mixing vocals, especially hip hop vocals, since Slate has new plugins.

Two words for this that helps me, Waves Vocal Rider. It is amazing!
Can you make a tutorial of mixing hip hop vocals recorded in a closet using Slate Digital VMR?

Hey David, I love your tutorial ... could you do a video on how to make a template that is perfect for you ... or some tips that can use to create a template.
Great video, thanks...!
love the song....
Sounds great man - nice work.
Do you honestly need all them plug ins in the chain ? Loved the clip gain trick tho.
Thanks for this awesome tutorial.I use Trimmer with the Slate Virtual Rack as the first module before it hits the mic modeler. Is it ok if the signal hits red on Trimmer or should reduce it so no reds show up?
Man i thought clip gain automation was HD only. checked it and i have it in pt11 native, thats awesome :)
Great tutorial....thnx a lot !
Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you
Awesome, thanks for checking it out!
so useful tnx Mr Glenn
Great lesson but my question is why did you boost 1 kHz using pro q2 but you didn't boost in the VMR ssl eq?
Great question! Honestly, I love the keyboard shortcuts with the ProQ2 and I can feel things out better sometimes having that control with my Apple Track Pad. It's a personal preference... The VMR EQ's sound great.
Pro Q2 is a much more transparent eq and SSL could introduce maybe too much color and harmonics he didnt want to introduce to the signal? Just my guess..
Great ! Thanks !
great tutorial, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Great video
How do you make the VMR smaller? I can’t see the bottom of it and I can’t see the beginning since I added to it
How'd you get all those extra bus sends? Is that a pro tools HD thing? I only have 128, whereas in this video you have 300+.
This is a great video !
Thanks for checking it out!
David

that was a great tutorial!!! thank you
Why did you use the compressor twice on the vocals in VMR?
Everybody seems to only be mixing rock. Mix, hip-hop and rap
Boom bap
Incredible
After watching this video everything that I know about vocal mixing seems to hit the ground
Lol I found myself singing this in the shower.
How did you get 6 modules to show up in the rack? I can only get 5 to display. I’ve got the newest version of the plugin installed too. Is there some voodoo that I’m not aware of to get 6 to show up? :)

first in the video did you use volume or gain?
I really need this song! Where to find it?
Why do PT faders look sticky when you move them?
Hello bro, Which Protools Are you using ? And does it need any Avid I/O to run this protools ?
What used shipments? Chorus ...
This was nice
kool..but i wish you wouldve showed the TOP VOCAL TRACK you processed with the limmiter 1st!
Where can I found out about this band?
what plugins do you use on your last two dimension bus ?
I Wish we can work I've learn a lot from just this video
23:49 & 1:01
Man...I Love Fabfilter stuff but I just cannot seem to get their Deesser to work on my voice. I'm kinda sold on the old school waves deesser, but I've got like 5 of em from different brands. I hear Weiss is the best..but it's like 200 bucks and that ain't hapnin. Cool vid.
can i get the name of this Pluging ?
Which program was used to process this video? Cubase Artist 9 ?
Protools
i just wanted all slate plugins for vocal chain...
8:51 that's fast attack slow release FYI....
not on fet compressors, it goes fast to fastest, confused me too
good music
when you increase clip gain is that the same as just automating it louder?
+Ryan Holms clip gain adjusts the volume into the channel strip but the reason why its good to use is it changes how the overview looks so you can visually so how much you are boosting
Clip gain is pre volume fader. Automating is writing the volume fader to move.
what song is that ?
Terrific tutorial, thank you!
Everything I know seems to hit the ground.
Hey. MY VMR ONLY SHOWS 3 UNITS @ A TIME!! how did u get it to show 6 units???
Just drag in an extra unit...
Oh boy. There's this tendency to fix and "enhance," and it comes out sounding like kraft glitter.
Good vid... I'm 3:20 seconds in

Everything I know seems to hit the ground.
