    Pick #23:
    There was a movie made about the 21 scandal called " Quiz Show ", Ralph Fiennes the star, that's a pretty good dramatic telling of the story

    • @SapinskiMath
      @SapinskiMath 7 днів тому +1

      The reason for the rigging: the premiere episode of 21 saw the contestants miss a combined 17 questions. While a laugh riot in the studio, sponsor Geritol was furious and demanded that next week's show better be a vast improvement or they were pulling out. And so, the choice was made to rig.

    The best story out of the 1950 American TV scandals was that Joyce Brothers, a psychologist, went on the $64,000 Question as an expert in boxing. She won, much to everyone else's surprise. So of course she was suspected of having been cheating, but was cleared when it turned out that her expertise on boxing was well earned and that she actually knew more than she said on the show. This started a great career for her in the public eye right up until the day she died.

    • @SapinskiMath

      True story (as told in Randy West's book "TV Inside Out"): Revlon, the sponsor, didn't want her to win, and demanded the show give her the hardest questions possible to thwart her. But she still succeeded. Part of the reason: Unbeknownst to everyone, she was friends with the very person who was writing the boxing material.

    I don’t care when anyone says the kid on Jeopardy straight up got robbed.
    He clearly knew the answer which is kind of the whole point of the game, which is to know the right answer but they wouldn’t give it to him because of a slight spelling error… which is complete bullshit.

    • @ChromeCobra
      @ChromeCobra 9 днів тому

      yeah, but it is an error, period. Answers have been wrong before for pronunication, so this isn't out of the ordinary. Chill out.

    • @DXKramer
      @DXKramer 9 днів тому

      While you are correct, Jeopardy has stated that misspellings are ok, as long as the word would be PRONOUNCED the same.
      He could have written "Emancipayshun," and it would have been deemed correct, as the pronunciation would have been the same.

    • @SapinskiMath
      @SapinskiMath 7 днів тому

      What a lot of people overlook about this moment was that even if the error was let go, the kid would not have won. He was in second at the time and the leader got it right anyway for a big payday. Some still act to this day like the kid would have won the whole show if not for the cruel harsh producers.

    Regarding #18, you may not have seen the documentary film "Perfect Bid - The Contestant Who Knew Too Much" which explains in detail how Terry Kniess was provided his perfect bid on his showcase by an actual long-time viewer (me). Terry has admitted in interviews that he only started watching the show a few months before going to the taping in September of 2008, so I would hardly call him a "long-time viewer" of the show.

    Why was the Price is Right thing such a big deal? A handful of people have correctly guessed the exact price of the showcase over the years. When you do, you win both showcases! Why were the producers scrambling to make sure no one else can do it, and investigating if he cheated? That’s really weird! He wasn’t the first one to do that!
    Also, I hope you get better, Mike. We’re sick here too.

    • @DXKramer
      @DXKramer 9 днів тому

      1) It was the first time in the show's history that the showcase big was perfect.
      2) You win both showcases if you're within $250 (originally $100) of the price of the showcase without going over.
      3) Cheating was suspected for a number of reasons. First, prizes were used and overused so much that people were able to memorize the prices of them. Second, one such person, Ted, was in the audience that day, and he was given a death glare by then-producer Kathy Greco when the perfect bid happened. Most importantly, longtime staffer Roger Dobkowitz was let go only months before, so it was suspected that people from a certain fansite had infiltrated the show and were sabotaging it.
      Sources: the show itself and the documentary "Perfect Bid: the Contestant Who Knew Too Much."

    • @SapinskiMath
      @SapinskiMath 7 днів тому

      @@DXKramerfrom my understanding, the book Come On Down written by Stanley Blitz the same year Bob retired claims there was one perfect bid up to that point. So this would have been the second, if that's true.

    • @SapinskiMath
      @SapinskiMath 7 днів тому

      Roger Dobkowitz once stated in a blog interview that that perfect bid was something he and Bob wanted and encouraged if at all possible. They wanted the "loyal friends and true" to be rewarded for their constant viewership and turn this into a great PR moment if it ever happened on their watch (again, see my other comment). Obviously, after he was let go, the other staff did not agree.
      Personally, I think the bigger issue was Carey's no-sell of the moment. He was still green and had a lot to learn, but dude, fake the excitement now and complain later.

    Deal or No Deal UK featured 2 controversial editions 1 where a box contained no prize not even 1 penny and another where a contestant dropped his box which burst open revealing £20,000 of a possible £250,000 . Even Noel Edmonds , the shows presenter , was visibly angry when the £20,000 box was dropped .

    • @SapinskiMath
      @SapinskiMath 7 днів тому

      I've seen the one where they forgot to tape the money value in the box and it was empty ("an act of God", the priest contestant said), but not one with dropping the box, though. Was this the chosen contestant while they were walking up to the table at the start of the show? I imagine this blooper had to happen sooner or later, though.
      I also heard that in the beginning of the UK run in 2005, the values in the boxes had patterns to them, with only a select few arrangements of where everything was. So someone could have pulled a Michael Larson if they paid close enough attention. But the practice was dropped before it got that far.

    As a lifelong game show fan, all of the American stories and a couple of the international ones, I knew about.
    That two of the top 5 on the list were about the same show, The Moment of Truth, and knowing that ours in the US was just as shocking and tasteless, proves how terrible of a concept it was.
    The only show I'd add to this list in any way is The Chamber. Both it and ABC's counterpart The Chair decided it was a good idea to torture contestants while making them answer trivia questions. But The Chamber was way worse, subjecting contestants to extreme heat and cold that could have had massive health effects in them. The backlash quickly built, and Fox pulled the show after only 3 of the 6 taped episodes had aired.

    Every time I see Thomas Hurley on a game show scandal list I have to explain why there was no scandal involved. The extra T he added to his response changed the pronunciation of the word 'emancipation' and therefore could not be accepted. Besides, the contestant who wound up winning that episode had him covered by a healthy margin so it would not have mattered anyway.
    Admittedly he was just a kid, but the same rules apply to the adults. Normally Jeopardy! does not penalize for misspelling, but if the spelling error changes the word phonetically, it cannot be accepted and this has happened more often than people may think. So I'm sorry to say that Thomas Hurley was wrong.

      This is a highly mistaken belief, and I have friends who know people in the game show business here in the US that will completely refute this argument. I can't speak for your country and how they do the process, but the people who get on shows here know how to play the games well. It's just sometimes, though, the pressure of the moment hits harder than you ever thought it would when the cameras are on you.
      Case in point, a friend of mine was on Millionaire six years ago. Very smart, even hosts his own version of the show at pop culture conventions. But he only won $10,000 cuz he overthought the very easy first questions. And he knew it, too, he was very flustered during commercial breaks, he told me. But he was still happy to have his chance.
      The saying we have here regarding game shows: It's always easier when you're sitting at home.
