    to me one of the best movies ever PERIOD. the level of empathy it has for all of its characters is so beautiful. i'm an artist and have struggled with deep depression, and saw myself (from the past thankfully) so deeply in colm that the first time i watched it i almost couldn't finish it. i think it tells a very dark truth about despair and mental illness that can get glossed over in art, which is how it can ruin the way you experience other people and their average everyday niceness and companionship

      This movie did not resonate with me, personally, but I am glad you were able to find something in it that spoke to you. Reading your take helped me see how that is possible. (I had a similar experience with Everything Everywhere All At Once. Some people dismissed the film as trash, but man did I identify on a deep level with the characters/messages.)
      All our past experiences shape how we view and experience everything after, film included. When we see something of ourselves or something we “know” in someone else’s art… it’s a powerful, affirming thing. Great that you found that in Banshees! Thanks for sharing your perspective!

    This is an allegory of the Irish Civil War (which is taking place in the background). I'd recommend watching some interviews with Martin McDonagh in which he talks a lot about the film.

    I've been waiting for a long time for someone to post a reaction to "Banshee")) A masterpiece, this film continues to remain in my memory for a year now and constantly touches me. No one is right or wrong, it’s difficult to “give roles” to the characters, it’s painfully reminiscent of real life cases (except for the fingers ;) )
    It’s interesting - as Podrick’s “fall” progresses, animals increasingly enter his house. At first his sister doesn’t let them in, and when she leaves, the cow is already lying inside the house with him. In theory, this symbolizes hell - living alone among animals.
    Are cut off fingers a human sacrifice to become immortal in art? Pain that is necessary for creativity? Was it worth it in the end? Or is this a metaphor for the fact that without simple connections between people (without fingers) there is no art? God knows, this movie doesn't care))
    The character of Barry Keoghan is most touching - when he says - well, this dream is gone, and then he declares that he still has things to do somewhere out there: only after watching you understand what kind of things - to drown himself, because there is more hope it was gone, the last one collapsed. It's harsh.

    • @chrissiereacts
      @chrissiereacts  9 місяців тому +5

      I'm glad I was able to deliver 😄
      Do you think him cutting off his fingers also meant he could no longer hide behind the idea that it was Padraic that was holding him back? He talks about being one of the greats and how he wants to be remembered for his music. Instead of an ear he chose his fingers.

    • @2012Ragnvald
      @2012Ragnvald 9 місяців тому +1

      @@chrissiereacts Perhaps, partly. He blames Padraic for this, but it is not he who is holding him back, but something inside Colm himself. Where else could the idea of self-harm come from?
      I also think that the cut off fingers give significance to his intention to devote himself to music, such a psychological mechanism. Most likely, he realizes that he will no longer become the second Mozart. Maybe that’s why at the end he cuts off all the remaining 4 - after that you won’t be able to play: that’s it, now Padraic is definitely to blame, but for himself Colm can say - I did everything possible, even went to extreme measures, but they literally didn’t let me . Subconsciously, at least.
      -
      Maybe Colm will even find peace after the finale. Without fingers, without a friend, accidentally killing a donkey (being stubborn like a donkey, huh). But Siobhán escaped from this madness, but she, too, was wondering whether to drown herself. Well, damn sad for Padraic.
      -
      Of course, if you look at it from the point of view of psychiatry, then this is a direct diagnosis ;) But I would like to perceive this more theatrically, otherwise it turns out too dark. It will be great if you see the rest of both McDonagh brothers ;)

    • @malikchebli5843

      I think the symbolism behind the cutting of the fingers is how we self mutilated our selves and ideals during the civil war in Ireland during the early 20th century. I love how you are able to further explore it as a symbol for the human condition. Nice interpretations. I love it

    Just came across your channel. Thank you. Such an amazing script and story, so many ways to look at it. When I watched it I felt the same kind of confusion. What I think having rewatched your reaction is that Paidric was innocent and naive and Colm was intelligent and depressed, that they were dealing with the black dog in their own ways and eventually learned the place in the middle. Dominic had both of them, the innocence with being simple and neurodivergent and the complexity of his dad beating him. It’s so sad what happened to him but thank you for sharing it again

    This is definitely one of those films where I can appreciate aspects (the allegory, the performances, the gorgeous setting) and still not like it as a whole. I don’t mind darkness, drama, or difficult topics. I don’t even need a happy ending. This film, though, to me, is all trauma and suffering and cruelty, and I just can’t enjoy it.
    In your outro, you wondered if Padraic has finally come to terms with things. The actors themselves have debated the ending. For me, by the end of the film, their relationship was beyond toxic and I think Padraic was able to recognize that. He said he’d watch the dog “any time” but I feel that was more for the pup’s sake than for Colm’s. Shows that, despite the change in him, Padraic still has his core caring and decency. Just my take from a single viewing. I think some people see hope of reconciliation in that line. Different perspectives abound!

    • @chrissiereacts
      @chrissiereacts  9 місяців тому

      That is interesting because in my mind it was the comfort of knowing that if Colm was to give into the despair completely, he knew his dog would be cared for; Padraic saying 'any time' could be interpreted as - whenever you decide you're ready to go, I'll be here for him. So it was more dark in my mind than hopeful. But I also questioned that train of thought and I could be way off...
      I love all the possible outlooks and perspectives this film offers!

    • @dandyfluff
      @dandyfluff 9 місяців тому

      @@chrissiereacts I honestly don’t think there is a right or wrong answer. The filmmakers may have had their own ideas in mind, but if they wanted to push one specific message, they would have made it less ambiguous. People come at life with all sorts of different experiences that color how they look at and interpret the world (and art). I love hearing other perspectives. It’s fascinating how people can have such different ways of seeing the same things! (And it's fun to watch artists take advantage of that, then debate what it all means!)

    When it came out it was presented as a comedy and that didn't help one bit. It clearly isn't, and no matter how good a movie it is, how beautiful the locations are, or how great the acting is, it's hard to focus on those when you were going in expecting something completely different.
