Started riding fixed gear 6 years ago. Now I ride less and finally have the income to fullfil my love for cars. But riding fixed will always be with me. Nothing like riding downtown SF, with a cool wind and the best feeling of freedom.
Just an amazing video with picture perfect editing, camera work, and an excellent music selection that absolutely makes it. Just great stuff. Really gives one the feeling of the Fixie bike culture. I've watched this video multiple times and never tire of it. Probably one of the best bike short pieces.
Although I don't ride as often anymore. The feeling of freedom I got while riding the streets of San Francisco, along the pier, downtown, japan town, etc. are some of the best moments in my life.
this video was so huge for me back in the day, the tiny handlebars are a bit dated though. 39 years old and still riding fixed, as long as my knees work
I just put together my first fixie TODAY. I rode for a couple hours and it was SOOO fun. I'm 30 and was a heavy mountain biker, skateboarder and snowboarder for 15 years. I feel so connected and the workout was great. No Coasting...haha. The guys in this vid are SICK riders. Take it slow, learn and progress!!! You don't do these hills over night. I don't ride a helmet skating or snowboarding but I do on my bike...but I get why a lot of people don't. Stay safe! Sick riding, good vid!
These vids inspired me to build my first fixie..... Finished last week and cannot stop riding the thing LOL... I even took a day off school to ride. I will NEVER go back to gears!!
This and the Jason Clary promo for State Bicycle are what got me into fixed gear. 10 years later and I still can't do any of these gnarly tricks, but it's what gave me the initial inspiration and I still ride a track bike today. Once you go fixed, you never go back.
We spent the first 6 years of my son's life on bike (until he found baseball). He literally used to watch this is Danny Macaskill's Long Road Home 10 times a day at the age of 1. Glad to know this video is still out there.
What they are doing now on scene guys?? Have insta? Im curious. This movie made me ride fixed gear when im young about 5 or 7 yrs ago. Big thnaks for Macaframa.🤘🏻
It's by a group called Aluminum, and it's a cover of the White Stripes, not actually by the White Stripes. You can find it on iTunes, not on Amazon. Search for "Aluminum". I found and downloaded it yesterday.
Congratulations, this video is a beautiful piece of art, I can't wait for the final piece. I am showing this to all my friends to make them true belivers in track bikes. Great music.
Amazing Riding. Been riding a fixie for years and this was one of the videos that inspired it all! Can't say I take the risks these guys do nor can I perform some of the tricks they can, but still, absolutely beautiful riding. The DVD is incredible, btw. Took forever to come out, but still had mine on preorder the second I saw it come up on your website. Keep riding fellas!
Damn this video makes me sad. Makes me remember all the old memories I had when I would ride around my neighbor hood with my fixe and with old friends who I no longer know
it's been about a 2 years since i started this hobby, and I remember before i did this i felt that everything around me was so far away. then i realized after riding everyday, all my surrounds are so local. I can get to los angeles in about 1 hour and i live 20 miles away.. now i feel like i can go anywhere on my free will..well back then it was a bmx bike and that took forever!@
@madmageone they can pull on on the front one with use of foot retention. I the cases when they are skidding with a singular foot they are leaning over the front to unweight the back wheel which enables the rider to exert enough force to lock the the back wheel.
I was hooked when I first saw this 15 - 16 years ago. I did not even build up to hitting declines, it just fucken happened and luckily none of my friends or myself got hurt. I now rarely ride but when I do I make sure to avoid riding down any hills lmao
@peerpressure1999 The poster got it wrong. He said that it's the white stripes and the album is aluminum when in fact, the artist is aluminum. the song is still "I'm Bound to Pack it up" though.
I wanna ride my 1978 AMF Bruce Jenner Mag Wheel Sprint bike through San Fran's steep down hills! But I live in NY and the bikes in Detriot! Gr8 work guys!!!
@florastacey9229 it means that if you don't mount brakes, the only way to brake is to skid (as they do in the video) or counterpedal backwards (it is hard at high speeds) without skidding. as long as the back wheel spins, the pedals will also spin = fixed gear. you can think about it and you understand how the riding experience will turn out.
If you watch the movie Macaframa on DVD, you can see Keo do a front wheel scrape 180 on his track bike and John skateboard on his toptube. Half these guys started off BMX riding before even thinking about a fixed gear. Riding fixed gear is fun. Anyone who says otherwise needs to try it for longer than a day.
@arch49er Exactly what I was going for! Really appreciate not harping on the dangerous elements of the film as it is solely a representation of how we ride in SF. Thanks for digging good music!
same here about every month sometimes a little bit less but ive found it quite helpful to check the tire take it off and put it back on on a diferent position so that when my right leg is in the back (my skidding position) the tire itself wont be on the same part
nice vid! good riders and nice music. we have quite the fixie group where i live and we are all into the classic look its pretty bomb, youll be ridin and see some nice ol bikes that have a more modern touch very appealing. one thing i would have liked to se is how many times these riders have been beamed when blowing a stop!
there are tons of good track bikes for just cruising around town or going fast. it's a bit hard to tell which one he has as 0:20 because it looks like he powdercoated it orange. Some good ones are Bianchi's, Leader's, Nishiki, Broakland, Alma Pura, Mercier, Bare Knuckles, Surly, Raleigh. There are so many to choose from, though some are more expensive than others
@spidy05 no brakes dude, fixed bike is like a monocycle with 2 wheels, to decelerate you have to "back push on pedals" (excuse my english) or if you're good enough to go fast and stop pedals the back wheel will just slide... to try it is the only way.
@Javasbiggestfan I'd go for something like 46x17. A good balance between speed / ability to pull up fast in hilly areas. It's also a perfect gear to pull off wheelies and "keo" spins with. Any lower and you'll have more of a tricks-dedicated bike, which is fine if you don't use it to go places.
In case you didn't notice, the only time they came to a stop in the video (not counting when they were moving very slowly to begin with) was when they crashed.
while that might be true, you'll overlooking the seat tube angle aspect and geometry (raised bottom bracket). Track bikes are fixed gear, but not all fixed gear are "track" bikes...
@maur0r10 naturaly through skidding your cog will get lose you just want to make sure its tight before every ride also anouther thing you might want to try is (if your chain is tight) leaving your chain a little lose this will alow your wheel to gradually slow down into a skid while still having momentum. as of welding your cog on, i would suggest it cuas there might be a time where you dont want to change your wheel but you might have to change the gear to a suitible ratio for you hope it helps
I'm a roadie and I must admit that these guys have some awesome skills! Very jealous lol. Great music btw. Would've been cool if the rider at the end of the video rode his bike right to the inside of a subway car :-).
not rim wear on side walls, but, i believe those bikes use a lot of pressure on tires (more than 60psi, minimum)therefore rims risk bending and hubs tend to get damage on bearings, when u hit the tire or jump (like on the vid) or get off the sidewalk. I dont mean on the drifting.
Its not that bad. It really depends on how much you skid. I commute a few days a week and find myself replacing tires every 3-4 months. It also depends on the tire you select.
Its called "skid" They don't have a lot of pressure on top of the tires in order to burn all of the tire off. Some cheap tires would pop but there are some inner tubes and tires that are ment for "skidding"
@NewKoshin if you stop peddling, most of the time you will fly off (if its your first time) but otherwise you can skid by pushing back but you have to learn to do that rather then just stoping your feet it takes a little effort.
Today is 2020. I miss my childhood going around the city on my fixed gear. This video inspire me that day.
I got you homie, from 2021
Today is 2021. Its not too late!
Bro get back out there!
Guys! It's 2022. I'M BACK on fixed gear!
The year was 2012, I was in my late thirties and got on a fixed gear. I never felt more alive.
I can’t believe this video is 15 years old now… time flies. Still love my fixie!
2023 now, this video was the beginning to me riding fixed gear. Thank you for such a great memory of what it used to be. 🤝🏽
me too
... I saw this video in 2008... woOow... such a good remember!
13 year later and i am still watching this..
Thank you, for me 14 years, but this is still good.
(It took a while to get the good search criteria after it, but did it :) )
bc the filming & editing are timeless bc it was ahead of its time...the drone & aerial footage
Today is 2022. And this very video 15 years ago is what got me into fixies. It's a very freeing style of cycling. I can't explain it
Such good memories. Used to live in SJ in the early 00s and would take Cal-Train up to SF and ride to work almost daily.
Started riding fixed gear 6 years ago. Now I ride less and finally have the income to fullfil my love for cars. But riding fixed will always be with me. Nothing like riding downtown SF, with a cool wind and the best feeling of freedom.
about 5 years years ago this motivated me and a bunch of friends to ride
10 yrs now lol
17 years ago now, im only 23 and this is giving me motivation to go ride my fixgear right now
Just an amazing video with picture perfect editing, camera work, and an excellent music selection that absolutely makes it. Just great stuff. Really gives one the feeling of the Fixie bike culture. I've watched this video multiple times and never tire of it. Probably one of the best bike short pieces.
Frickin' Colin and that skid out in the Bart station lol I wish so bad Colin and Colby would bring back Macaframa. Been riding fixed since '05
Beautifully made. I love how they captured the " spirit " of fixed gear riding...
Can't wait for the DVD to come out.
Wow time flies! Been riding fixed for 11 years now all cause of this video❤️
Although I don't ride as often anymore. The feeling of freedom I got while riding the streets of San Francisco, along the pier, downtown, japan town, etc. are some of the best moments in my life.

Sick riding, good vid!
I saw the showing of this film at Bicycle Film Fest last night! It was everything I expected it to be and more. It got a standing ovation in Austin.
Timeless video
These vids inspired me to build my first fixie..... Finished last week and cannot stop riding the thing LOL... I even took a day off school to ride.
I will NEVER go back to gears!!
46-17 for the most part, some tougher some lighter, but around 73 gear inches.
got into fixed gear bc of y'all! 49-17 for me.
Back when cycling had hit its peak. Some great times here in the city drinking, riding and having a good time vibing
this is the piece played in my head while riding bicycle ,fixgear or not , since 2008
This and the Jason Clary promo for State Bicycle are what got me into fixed gear. 10 years later and I still can't do any of these gnarly tricks, but it's what gave me the initial inspiration and I still ride a track bike today. Once you go fixed, you never go back.
is there any moment in their full movie where they ride uphill with those fixies?
We spent the first 6 years of my son's life on bike (until he found baseball). He literally used to watch this is Danny Macaskill's Long Road Home 10 times a day at the age of 1. Glad to know this video is still out there.
2020??
Listening the music after my first time watching that 11 years ago, I still remember my feelings and where I was! Pure nostalgia!
That is some fancy red light and stop sign running. Fancy helmets too.
Yes, we fancy
still one of the best videos the internet has to offer. brilliant song, epic shots and inspiring riders
keep the fun alife,
happyriding from germany
did anyone else notice at 3:30 whats happening in the bottom left corner?
Some people were scare of the dog lol
Joseph Sigala this lady pushed another back
Charlieswag9000 well yeah, because the dog was coming in head on lol
Joseph Sigala it was just a guy walking his dog...
What they are doing now on scene guys?? Have insta? Im curious. This movie made me ride fixed gear when im young about 5 or 7 yrs ago.
Big thnaks for Macaframa.🤘🏻
10th? i may be in the hundreds. found it 2 years ago and i am still amazed.
It's from Aluminum . . . a collection of White Stripes songs that have been reworked into orchestral pieces.
see wikipedia: Aluminum (album)
SF, you are sorely missed :( Superb video and perfect song!
Great music.

for some reason.. idk why... but this made me wanna go out and accomplish something. i truly thank you for making this
i love this. the music, the bikes, everything. beautiful.
Simple shots. Perfect music. Immaculate.
song is "I'm bound to pack it up" by Aluminium.. downloaded it from iTunes the other day.
@Motomessenger The original "I'm bound to pack it up." is by The White Stripes. This cover is by Aluminum
Damn this video makes me sad. Makes me remember all the old memories I had when I would ride around my neighbor hood with my fixe and with old friends who I no longer know
to be more specific, this version was composed by the artist Aluminum and is on their self titled album
True tops on that banger. Flipped em right up on top, never seen a better proppa show.
I agree, I used to get stoked watching the Mash trailer but this is even better...Best fixie find on UA-cam for sure.
Awesome. Great reminder of how fun bikes are.
Barspin trick at 0:50 is the coolest thing I've ever seen.
Funny how the times have changed and everyone wants to ride gravel with fatter tires! I'll never go back to 23c but these memories are nice.
it's been about a 2 years since i started this hobby, and I remember before i did this i felt that everything around me was so far away. then i realized after riding everyday, all my surrounds are so local.

Oh man, I used to live in NYC and believe me, when you see them guys work, they force the respect !
This song is originally by the white stripes... Bound to pack it up, you can find it on the dstijl album.... Its quite different to this one ;)
I was hooked when I first saw this 15 - 16 years ago. I did not even build up to hitting declines, it just fucken happened and luckily none of my friends or myself got hurt. I now rarely ride but when I do I make sure to avoid riding down any hills lmao
this entire video (especially from 3:00 onwards) reminds me of millions of snowboarding videos!
This video was what got me into riding fixed 3 years ago. Still good.
Beautiful. This video is simply beautiful. The best on you tube.
this is such a great video & the music is so good its unreal
@peerpressure1999 The poster got it wrong. He said that it's the white stripes and the album is aluminum when in fact, the artist is aluminum. the song is still "I'm Bound to Pack it up" though.

almost 2 year anniversary of this video and it still rips.
daaamn all my respect to these guys!!!...
i been wanting a fixie for while but i dont have the money for one yet lol
This clip is what got me to start riding fixed...
same here about every month sometimes a little bit less but ive found it quite helpful to check the tire take it off and put it back on on a diferent position so that when my right leg is in the back (my skidding position) the tire itself wont be on the same part

i was into skateboarding and still am a bit, but as we grow up it seems biking helps the need to get the places. very true
What a Beautiful Film!

Congratulation guys, it's just amazing !!!
Going to SF to visit some family and gonna take my Bike to ride out there it seems like a dope city to ride!
I'm a roadie and I must admit that these guys have some awesome skills! Very jealous lol. Great music btw. Would've been cool if the rider at the end of the video rode his bike right to the inside of a subway car :-).
cheers guys, much appreciated.
hvx200?
beautiful autumn colors
well done
brilliantly filmed
Can't belive that this video was uploaded 5 years ago.
Use to watch this before hitting the beach 🏝️ on the fixie

Beautiful footage.
pure and true. what's your next post,colindinho?.... used to be an SF messenger. this speaks nicely to the bike culture there. congrats.
This is still a fucking art
@RetroStyle29 Thanks for the positive feedback!! Appreciate the love!
I get really stoked and have the impulse to go bomb some hills every time I watch this
yeah they are but your front rim is gonna have to be smaller in order to do it and your gonna have to gaet rizer bars or straight bars
Its not that bad. It really depends on how much you skid. I commute a few days a week and find myself replacing tires every 3-4 months. It also depends on the tire you select.

Only one i can recall are Vittoria Zaffiro 2
, they come in all white, you can probably get it online
@NewKoshin if you stop peddling, most of the time you will fly off (if its your first time) but otherwise you can skid by pushing back but you have to learn to do that rather then just stoping your feet it takes a little effort.
