    10 years in a paint factory, I can tell you, there are 2 things that I recommend everyone spend a bit of money on from the start on a big job. 1, A large muck bucket. Intermixing buckets of same color before a job is an absolute must. 2, extra paint. I know it costs a pretty penny but having an extra 5 gallons of the exact same paint that's been intermixed is an absolute. an extra few hundred bucks is a lot, but 5-10 years from now youd be happy to have it, and in this instance having a bit extra to throw a coat on the shed so they mach would be less work that repainting over the house

    The issue is probably with the one gallon vs five gallon. Sometimes the mixing system can't split out the dyes exactly the same between the different sizes. I learned this a few years back when my dad and I were flipping a house. Painted the interior using five gallon buckets. Once we were all done with all other work, we bought a one gallon can to touch up any marks on the walls. Ended up the gallon was slightly lighter than the five gallon version. We had to repaint individual walls to make it look right. Learned my lesson. This past year I repainted the outside of my house. They were out of stock in the five gallon buckets when I bought the first round of paint. When I went back, they had the five gallon buckets, but I asked for single gallons so the color would be consistent.

    I watched "live" as well. Here's an idea for the big blank area on the house...
    Someone suggested projecting your logo on the side of the house. Take this to the next level. Put up a projector and some sort of screen (if wanted for clarity purposes). Then for the "live" project your logo. During other videos, you could project product sponsors, merch or names of special donors to the channel. When you're having a gathering you could project the ball game, the movie, Christmas decorations, or even hold a class with a live audience (plenty of seating in the yard - put up a tent if wanted).

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  2 роки тому

      I am seriously kicking around that idea. But keep in mind when the house is complete in a few months, our live streams will move to it. So I might had better not invest much, if anything into it.

    Paint the storm shelter to match the house. I mixed paint for JC Penny's when I worked for them in Clearwater, Fla. I can tell you this, the color can be off. I told people if they where painting a large area, like a house, to mix all the paint into a large container. Say 10 gal. to mix it all together so it all matches. I know paint machines have come along way since I mixed paint. The tint could have been off Andrew or the person tinting the paint could have put more or less in of one color tint. Ask to store manager to come out and look at the paint. I would still ask them for the paint or a refund. Good Luck !

    I heard you identify what the color match problem was when you were showing the 1 gallon paint can with the mix sticker from Sherwin Williams and then talking about taking that gallon can with the mix sticker to Lowes to buy paint. The paint at Lowes in not the same as what's in a "true Sherwin Williams" paint store even though the label says it is "Sherwin Williams". That's why pro painters go to a real paint store and not to a big box like Lowes/Home Depot. Learned this from the painter who painted our house when we built it.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  2 роки тому

      We found the problem and you are partially correct. But Lowe's does mix true Sherwin Williams colors.

    • @CLTGeek
      @CLTGeek 2 роки тому

      1) Keep in mind Lowe's and all stores mix to spectral tolerance, not visual tolerance. They can use a light meter to very it's within tolerance but paint that's within spectral tolerance can still visually look very different to the human eye. 2) The base paint bought at Lowe's with Sherwin Williams colors is not the same paint you would get if you bought Sherwin Williams paint at the Sherwin Williams store. The slight (or major) base paint differences will absolutely affect the final visual color. 3) Lowe's has a very liberal paint return policy. They will accept the unsatisfactory paint back however they may never be able to exactly visually match paint you bought at a Sherwin Williams store even though they are licensed to mix spectrally match Sherwin Williams colors from the Sherwin Williams database. (Their system also includes spectral matches for colors of almost every paint brand sold in the US.)

    Hi Andrew! I learned the same issue you have…Paint at a Sherwin Williams store is different than the line to what Lowes sells. The SW store paint is suppose to be a bit better that the line that Lowes sells. I had a situation as you and found color variation between same ID numbers from the respective stores. I do not know where the SW paint came from for your storm shelter, perhaps a SW store? Maybe you are experiencing the same issue. Sorry to hear of your painful experience. Painted it and when I finished and it dried it was more gray then the first gallon. I was upset because I hate painting with a passion. Andrew, I was able to see the live cast and your explanation on the lightning rod question that I asked you. Lightning rods ground your roof from a strike and doesn't allow the strike to travel, say to your electrical system or to the metal trusses you have in your house. Yes what you are installing is supposed to save your electrical system. With the lightning rods you run a copper wire from one rod [one rod on one pike to another rod on the opposite pike and then to the ground so a lightning strike is directed to the ground. It will divert the strike from the roof and not to have the ability to travel to the metal trusses inside and to someone if they are close to a truss. I hope that I explained what they do. Something that is not to expensive [mostly a length of copper wire] something to consider for the future. the only reason why I ask is because I saw several times where you quit working on your house do to storms and lightning in the distance. No reply neccessary. Just giving you something that you might want to consider. I am remodeling my kitchen [paint, cabinets, laminate flooring]. You may want to watch: so that's how you do that, on UA-cam. The guy shows how to install laminate flooring and a bunch of tips and tricks on installation. Really informative. You know, I realize this is frustrating, but it’s not like they are adjoining tHe other buildings. I’ve heard from a LOT of painters that say that batches can always be slightly “off” from one run to the next and to buy as much or more than you might need for the ENTIRE project. Another thing to consider is the scale your working on. When you painted your storm shelter that was a year ago, that paint has aged in the sun that entire time. It is GOING to be a different shade. The only way I know of how to get everything to look EXACTLY the same is to: 1. paint it all white, 2. Paint everything at once with your custom color.
    They may have changed manufacturers of that shade of Gray, and it’s slightly off, or it just may meet to “age” a while.
    Bottom line: you roll the dice painting custom colors. Not every batch will be exact, in fact, the last time I bought a lot of paint from a Sherwin Williams “store” (NOT LOWES), they actually warned me of this potential issue. Does it suck any less, probably not, but I just wanted to impart some of the knowledge I’ve gained over the years of painting 4 homes that I’ve owned, inside and out. I actually “enjoy” painting, The end result is satisfying to me in some weird way LOL. But I know I’m a minority here as well. HOPE THIS HELPS!

So in places that tend to make my spine creep I have to think about what others will notice without being told and then just let it go. Maybe remind them that you have spent tens of thousands of dollars at their store...and any future business dealing with them is riding on what happens now.
    This, as they say, is a Deal Breaker event.

    It would appear that the mixing person took the color dye #'s and proportions from the one gallon can and put in in a five gallon can of base white. Hence you have a five gallon bucket of base white with the same amount of dye the one gallon can has. Results = your five gallon paint is one about 75% lighter.

    Painting is horrible. I agree on Sherwin-Williams though it’s worth the money. On cheap paint I have to do three or four coats sometimes. Especially if it’s on something absorbent even after you primer it or if it’s going over some weird color and some paints tend to bleed color in the new paint because they dissolve with it. I’m also a huge fan of oil based paint, it just works better and last longer no it’s incredibly messy so you have to mask everything to death because it’s very hard to clean up but that makes it good for paint because it’s not gonna wear out as fast either.
    That sprayer works pretty good and I like how you can just dip it in the bucket. I had an old Wagner power painter pro, it was similar in size and it works great but you had to pour the paint into the Wagner‘s paint tray bucket and it didn’t hold that much, maybe 1 gallon and you had to add another bottle of something that send it out so it would spray properly. I did the outside and inside of a three bedroom house and I was very thankful for it but the cleanup was a bit much. That hose hook up is nice also. I just had to dump the mineral spirits into it and just keep spraying till it came out clean. Lol. That one looks like a better design. It looks great. I do see what you’re saying about the color difference and it does look better on the shed. That’s pretty annoying. That happened on one of our cans of ceiling paint and it should’ve been pre-mix but one was just darker than the rest. :/ I definitely see the difference towards the end of your video, the shed looks like nice painted wood to where the house looks more like vinyl siding with the paint color. It might be because of the service your painting, maybe the wood absorbs it differently but after another coat it should the balanced out and if that was the case you would have some money even spots. It definitely seems like they got it wrong. :/
    The good thing from Lowe’s is they will redo it even after you use it, I’ve done it before. You can’t replace your time and it is what it is but Lowes should replace the paint, Lowes and Home Depot have always been really good about that.
    This morning I got up early because they were supposed to come finish the last two rooms of the carpet install which of course are my rooms and but we did around tell about an hour after you were supposed to be here and then started calling and apparently they just can’t get a hold of the guy, again. This is the third time maybe they’re called in or just didn’t bother to show up. I don’t know who’s running these businesses but this seems pretty common nowadays. When I was working construction this would’ve gotten people fired. Lol I guess the worlds change now you just have to suck it up and take what you get and live with it. 🙄
    I’ll call you next time 😂😂

The fact that it doesn’t is on them. They should have opened the other the 1 gallon and the 5 gallon and done a draw down sample from both to make sure it matched before it left the shop. The fact that it doesn’t is because they just assumed that the “Dorian Gray” was the same in all the mixes. They should refund and/or give you a new 5 gallons that does match.

Did yall do any of these issues i talked about. i'd just repaint the shed same as house and call it good. If it were me it wouldn't bother me since they're not next to each other, but I've been told that I'm not the discerning type! Big question is getting the right blend for the rest of the house. P.S. How about your logo on that "big blank" on the back of your house? It's looking good whatever you decide!

      First one matches the color sample card perfectly, so it's definitely the right one.
