I have lived in Colorado Springs and Denver much of my life and I have never driven on this road. It is a beautiful drive! I knew at the start of this video that it was early to mid-May. My Kia Soul should have no problem on this road in good driving conditions. You are correct about the idiot drivers on these road, and many of them are Coloradoans who should know better. Thanks for your excellent video!
Thanks for the windshield and drone tour! This is more my kinda drive in my FJC 'cause its got to get me back home to the southeast. Enjoyed the scenery of an area I haven't explored in Colorado.
Is this the abandoned narrow gauge railroad right of way with the rails removed that I might have driven on back in about 1975-76 in my Econoline Van? We camped at a State or County park in the middle of the drive from Cripple Creek to I believe Colorado Springs. There were thousands of weathered tree stumps from a forest fire many years earlier, right across the gravel road from the park. Beautiful scenery!
Blessings in an abundance of the faith. I salute you. 😘🙏Grace and peace be unto you and to this place. God bless you. 💫Thank you. Will you believe and receive Jesus Christ as your lord and personal saviour??? I do. 🌏
Middle of May is a wee bit early. I live about 5mi west of shelf road, our last frost date is May 31. In May of '24 we got 42" of snow, so be aware and prepared. Also in the summer we can get some heavy rains that make the canyons dangerous. By the way Canon City is pronounced "canyon".
I drove shelf road in may of this year 2023 ,beautiful drive, easy trail, even saw my future retirement land for sale, 😂 that river runs through it. Beautiful drive highly recommend checking out.
@@Brian_yeah_that_brian_Strang for sure....I have a 30 min video of weston pass starting on the leadville side to the summit....dont have the recording of the summit to the fairplay side as battery died but it was very similar but I recall the west side was a bit more 4wd or awd friendly as there were some slippery small rock sections on uphill sections..... I checked trails off road and this commennt was from 5 days ago --> Ran this road in a Subaru Outback. The wildflowers were great. The trail is basically just a dirt road with a few rocky (2-4”) and steep sections.
Hi there...great videos...i dont have alot of time to head back North from canon city so if you had a choice ( other than going up from Colorado springs) would you take skyline drive up into Victor or phantom canyon road ? Thanks....Jim
My ex and I mountain bike a trail that includes a long stretch of the Shelf Road and people just flat-out drive WAY too fast on the thing. Slow down people! You're not going to a fire and mountain bikers sometimes have little room to let you safely pass.
Shelf Road is awesome, but is NOT suitable for large vehicles like big RVs because of some narrow spots. Low rider type cars also can't handle the big bumps. Any normal car, van, or pickup truck do just fine.

I drove Phantom Canyon Road last week and really enjoyed it. My next trip to Colorado i will do both.

Wow on the drone 8 min in. Went on Shelf Rd last weekend. Amazing granite rock formations, trees and canyon walls!
Outstanding drone footage! A very scenic backroad drive.
That was some really nice drone footage, Loved the threading the needle part.
Thanks for Sharing .. sorry about your pup .. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

That should be it since that is the history of Shelf Road.
Thanks, definitely worth doing the drive!@@TrailTraveler
Your road is called "old stage road" it goes east to west. Shelf road is a north to south road.

On one of the narrow steep cliff sections there’s a Cadillac in the bottom next to the creek.
Those mountains you see in the distance are the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) mountains, that range extends south into New Mexico.
I used to camp by Hole in the Rock on the shelf road in the 70s. BTW, that’s what it has been called for decades, Hole in the Rock.

so sorry for the loss of your pup.
Honk on the hairpin turns🙏🥳
RIP little Sonja... sorry buddy.
My Google maps took me down this "road" in my Mini cooper. Made it but it was terrifying.
nice! Similar to Weston pass! scenic and a nice relaxing drive
Could an outback do Weston pass?

@@DeanJohnson67 hell yeah thank you very much. Sounds like a good time. Thanks again
I did shelf road in a 1976 chevy Vega LONG time ago.
First time I did it was in an BMW X3
Great video!
Back in the 60s my dad called it the "Highline Drive", Don't know where you got the "Shelf" from.
As far as I know, it has never been called Highline Drive, all of the maps we have seen call it Shelf Road.
This road is named "Shelf Road".
Goldie Hawn in the Dutchess and the Dirtwater Fox movie shows Shelf Road stagecoach runaway! YW

Skyline drive is only 3 miles long and does not go north.
@@TrailTraveler thanks I'll do the 3 mile skyline and maybe continue north on whatever heads up to Brackenridge.
It’s pronounced “Canyon City.” In a correct spelling, there is a tilde over the “n.” Cañon City.

Nice gap. You fly FPV?
That was with the DJI FPV drone. I fly a Mavic 3 and Avata
@@TrailTraveler bet that Avata has been a treat!
I’ve been very happy with it
I would 100% engage 4x4 just to feel more planted in the road.
Shelf Rd parallels Phantom Canyon Rd. Would be nice to make them one way, or close one for pedestrian and bike use only.
@@ehulbert5 Phantom Canyon Rd runs to Canon City. Both roads are two way.
I’m from the area. Lots of folks die out there
Ever hear about the guy who took the cops on chase across phantom canyon rd? 2017
Awesome
Yup, scared me s....... In 1984.
Try watching our White Rim trail videos if you "like" shelf roads :)
Lol , you should have tried in the 70s
Great drone segway 7:46.
The music was not necessary.
I could do it in 45 minutes 😵💫🤗🥱🥱

If you don’t like heights don’t do it.. I hated it. The road is cool and safe
This is why we give a "shelf road warning" in videos now.
Yea I watched your video after I had already did the drive lol I probably would have still gone….nice video
It’s mine tailing
It's pronounced just like canyon.
Fort time in 11 years of living here have I heard that
You talk a little too much and distract the viewer from focusing on the views-instead of your personal views.
Yes I Totally Agree but you can simply just shut off the volume, that's what I did 😉
