  • If you can play 24 seconds of Long Tones without breathing, you should be able to play 24-seconds of scales without breathing. What if you can't? Watch and see.

Great videos! Glad to see the exploration of different subdivisions of the beat incorporated into scales/arps. I feel it's a great way to get a better feeling for the "big beat" and to hear your boring ol' scales in a fresh way.

I probably not qualified enough to comment, but I shall have a go. I play the sax reasonably OK as a hobby. I thought the reason for the bars is for you to have a pause, sucking in some solely needed air before you die of asphyxiation. I believe that sometimes it actually sounds better to have small pauses for effects. What is the purpose of this exercise? Is it meant to be a competition to see who can last the longest before turning blue and falling over?

Do you know any good solo's for bass clarinet? Not a hard one though, like flight of the bumble bee, but something like marche compique?

+Earspasm Music Hi there, I was wondering what you think about purchasing the Buffet E11 soprano clarinet? I primarily play bass clarinet and wanted to invest in a clarinet and am seeking advice about getting a clarinet, moneys not an issue (to a point). Anyway, thanks for reading and I hope to hear from you soon.

Check out Ridenour Libertas. They are fine instruments for the money. The E11 is really just a wooden student clarinet.

Hey man. through out time, I've seen people asking you, can you play this or that. Once you make a video about the request, people seem to be happy with your tips and performance. So can you make a video of how to play Chester by William Schuman. Im having problems with piece as how fast it goes. Google a Bass Clarinet part for the piece if you feel like it and make a video. hopefully I'll learn to play like you... some day

+Nintendo Vid That music isn't available online -- I checked. If you really want some help on it, maybe you can scan the part and tell me what you're having trouble with. I'll see if those elements are something I can make a video about, and if so, I'll put it on the docket.

      +Gibus Gibus
You're probably having a problem with your embouchure or your instrument. If your embouchure is bad, then you'll squeak. If your voicing is too high, the notes will move up partials. If your instrument is leaking, then it will sound bad everywhere and may sound overtones rather than the note you intend. Check that the 'octave' key isn't leaking, and make sure you're covering the holes.

+Gibus Gibus It indeed sounds like either a leak or a bent key. (You DO take good care of that instrument don't you???) This is something I'd suggest you take to your band director first, see what he/she says. If the instrument is yours, find a local music shop and see if they have a repair dude/dudette to take a look at it. It's probably very simple to fix.
Unless you ran over it with a car or something.

A saxophone player here, doubling on some clarinet, using a really, really, really terrible instrument. It's an ancient plastic Linton JML that had a busted tenon (that I repaired with Gorilla Glue), and needs a repad and overhaul. Do you have any connections you might share on getting a decent used instrument at a good value? (Or for a steal. Ha ha.) Going back and forth from my pristine professional alto sax to a clarinet and oboe that would be equally valuable as fire starters is beginning to be a bit trying. TIA.

+Jeffery Hogan It's really catch as catch can, you know? I'd avoid cheap student model horns, mainly because the keywork is so poor, and the metal they use on those instruments is too soft so it tends to bend rather than remaining stiff (think about the longer rods -- you need those not to torque). If you live in a bigger city or have any connections to a clarinet professor at a university, those are often good bets, as those teachers' students often will move up to a pro horn and need to sell their intermediate instrument. Good luck!

Gady... No. Buying an instrument without playing it is a recipe for disaster.
