    On these hockey puck head stocks you can reverse the way you wind the smallest 3 strings to lesson the severe angle of the strings through the nut. Lube the nut and it improves the tuning stability and you can also put cheap locking tuners if you want. Thats what I've always done on guitars that don't have fairly straight string pull through the nut.

    Thank you so much for this video! I have an Oscar Schmidt 3/4 size acoustic. I bought Earthwood strings for it and they’re the right gauge which made me happy , but the part that psyched me *most* was the string trim/file part. I’m so glad I found your channel! Thank you!!

    I'm always nervous about using steel wool near magnetic pickups. Any small pieces of steel will inevitably stick to one or both pickups without very close attention. I'd cover the pickups completely with tape.

      In the video, the pup covers were still in place as when bought new - but yes, you're right. Cover the magnetic poles with tape or you'll be in a world of trouble.

    Just come across this video. My son has one of these Jackson Dinky Minions. I did a set up on it last night as it still had the original strings on plus the fretboard was looking a bit dry.
    I replaced the strings with Ernie Ball Super Slinky's (9's). Intonation has been a bit tricky but all seems fine now. I will keep this video handy as a good reference in case the current set up I have done goes south.

    I wish the term 3/4 guitar was a little more accurate. It seems that anything from these 22.5 scale guitars to 24 scale guitars are included. An inch and a half is a significant change in scale length.
    I was able to get decent action and tuning stability with my 23.5 scale Peavey T-15 with 10-46 tuned to E flat. I did change to a custom set of 11- 52 Elixir Polywebs though and it workers better.

    I had a little Chiquita guitar at one time (like the one Michael J Fox played on the opening scene of Back to the Future). I would tune it up 2 and 1/2 steps to an A standard tuning which helped it stay in tune better. A different tuning might not be suitable for a student, especially if they wanted to jam with others, so your solution of using heavier strings is a great alternative.
    In my experience I have found that even cheap tuners work fine as long as the nut is not pinching or grabbing the strings. Would strongly suggest folks check the nut if they're having tuning stability issues before switching tuners.

    Hi Phill love your vids!! I recently purchased a Fender squire strat mini . I have installed locking tuners and lubed the nut with graphite and raised saddles to remove buzzing and turning intonation screw's at bridge but it seems I've nearby backed off screws to almost unscrewing them to get close to intonation of the strings. Have you ever set one up ? And do you think it would help to change saddle's to graphite? I'm hoping to get this guitar set up good enough to gig with .. Thanks keep it up and thanks for your time!

  • @Whiskel
    @Whiskel 5 років тому +3

    The thing is...11s would feel better to an adult grip. For a child learning I considered doing this for my nephew's minion. Then I realised you can't really drop the bridge, it's spot on intonation wise but the saddles are so near the back of the plate, when you try to adjust the height the screws just lift and the saddle doesn't drop. If I were to consider 11s I'd have to still make it easier for him to fret by lowering the action...Since I can't do this I'm just going to try the next set up from the stock 9-42 and see how it feels to him.

    • @MyFriendsPodcast
      @MyFriendsPodcast 7 місяців тому +1

      Yeah I would have paid more attention on buffing the frets a different way, adjusting the action and keeping the smaller gauge strings. For kids it’s hard enough to get the dexterity and then adding that heavier string is gonna make it worse.

    Hey, I'm from Mexico and yesterday I bought this guitar without knowing that it was smaller than the normal ones (I bought it on the internet on sale). I'm going to learn how to play guitar, so I am a beginner. Can you tell me wich strings should I buy for the best performance of this little guitar? I will start learning with this one and then get a full size one. I'm 21 and I am a little sad because it is my first guitar and I feel like a fool for buying a small one. Still, I'm being positive about it and I'm happy that I'll have an instrument so I can learn the basics. Thanks for your help, nice video!

    hey phil i just got a jackson minion and i love it. been playing about 15yrs now and have had many expensive guitars and somehow this minion is better than everyone i've had except the prs of course. with that said, i'm having a little trouble keeping the Bstring in tune. it keeps drastically detuning and even when i tune it up alot it just drops back a bunch. did i not file the nut slot properly or is it the string, i am using 11-48 and everyone is fitting great and staying in tune except the B.

      Sounds like the tuner for that string is bad. Get a cheap seat of locking tuners off ebay for $12.00 and use those on your guitar instead.

    • @taimaishu-nao1922
      @taimaishu-nao1922 4 роки тому +1

      sonic sega plain strings have a tendency to walk on you. Locking tuners will help with it but I’d highly suggest talking to a professional and getting it looked over as it may be something that only s/he can fix. Not saying that you’ve done anything wrong but it’s worth having it looked at.
      Another suggestion would be to use some Nut Sauce on the slots and see if it helps with stability. It may be that the string is binding in the nut. Again, it’s worth getting her looked at especially if that’s your primary guitar.

  • @Mikee535
    @Mikee535 2 роки тому

    I've been searching the Internet trying to find out if the string height over the 12th fret of a three-quarter scale acoustic guitar should be the same as a full scale acoustic guitar and you did not go over specifications for any of that. I guess I'm just going to go with 3/32 over the 12th fret like I would any other acoustic guitar. This is a Martin guitar 3/4 scale made in Mexico and the action right now is about a quarter of an inch over the 12th fret.

    String gauge is preference not make the guitar more or less playable. So what is your point?

    • @taimaishu-nao1922
      @taimaishu-nao1922 4 роки тому

      Wolf Due maybe perhaps true with Gibson (24-3/4”) of Fender (25.5”) standard scale lengths but having owned an Ibanez Mikro (22.5”), putting 9’s completely destroys the tuning stability and is too hard to keep in standard A440 tuning. There are some good references online that mention proper string adjustments in regards to different scale lengths. Like I mentioned above, a 22.5” scale guitar doesn’t like 9’s although I’m very used to playing 9’s. Reading through some of these conversion tables, using 10’s or 11’s greatly improves the string tension and tuning stability and allows a shorter scale guitar to play in the same tuning as a full scale guitar using 9-42’s.
      Yes, there is a preference to string gauge but if you have a short scale, it’s more important to use what gauge will keep the guitar in tune than just what feels nice in your fingers.

    • @wolfdue2236
      @wolfdue2236 4 роки тому

      @@taimaishu-nao1922 True...because of the tremolo bridge than anything else. And this guitar is short scale makes it harder to tune. The bigger gauge is harder to bend to a full note, bar chord and hard on the fingers, also buzz like a bee (on 3 heavy string E, A, D), hence high action to solve the problem. But no one likes high action on electric guitar unless you only plugging and play a lot of single note, like blues music and such.

      It's just common language to call them 3/4 or 2/3, the exact math is different. A typical guitar is 25.5" scale, 2/3 would be 17" and a 3/4 would be 19.125" and the mini guitars are 22.5" scale. It's closer to 5/6 size but not exactly.

    Agree completely, why on earth does a budget 3/4 beginner guitar need fancy inlays, two pickups, and a tone knob? May as well throw a floyd rose special on there too. These are strictly either fun throwaway guitars for adults, or children's guitars for very basic learning on before their hands can handle a full size guitar. At which point they can make more informed decisions on what pickups to use where, how and when to use the tone knob etc.

    • @PhillipMcKnight

      the scale is so short that the lack of tension makes the guitar that is already hard to keep in tune, worse.

    • @bbnatedogg
      @bbnatedogg 8 років тому +5

      +pupstop1 Also a shorter scale will result in less tension which makes it harder to get low action without fret buzz as the string have a larger ellipse when plucked. Heavier strings compensates by adding more tension.
      You can use light strings, but you won't get really low action without fret buzz. The lack of tension may also not allow enough relief in the neck, depending on the neck and type of truss rod. This also adversely affects action.

      Steel wool works if it's what you got. Never had problem with splinters or rust, but can make a bit of a nasty mess if you're not careful. The worst is bits end up stuck on the pickup magnets/polepieces. Used sticky tape to remove the tiny steel hairs since they were too small to easily get with fingers. Like trying to pick up iron filings. In the end, I like Scotchbrite better or very fine sandpaper/emery cloth, depending how bad the frets are and how polished you want to go.
