You can eliminate snipe by building an entry and exit table and using a planer sled. On the exit end of the board, it wants to hang down from it's own weight. That pushes the end up against the cutters, causing them to cut deep. Without an extension table and even with a sled, I found I could eliminate a lot of snipe by feeding the wood at an angel where the tail was elevated slightly. On the outfeed side, I elevated the leading end as the last of the board exited.
I do like this little planer and I have given some thought to adding a second one to my shop as right now I have the Dewalt which has been upgraded to shelix cutting heads. They cost more but they cut so much better and virtually no snipe. They do have issues but all machines do. I believe all fine woodworking must be finished by hand anyways.
Why would you need a second one when you have a dewalt which is a great unit and you went a step further and upgraded the cutter head which makes it even better
Excited to start using mine. Bought it for $256 at Direct Tools on Black Friday. Originally $319, but went to $256 with 20% off on Black Friday. Been thinking about getting a thickness planer for a while.
Awsome I've been looking for a wood planer. I'm a beginner. So, this one was on my radar. Just could not find any reviews for it. Great job on the review so far.
Ive been trying to buy one of this babies but I did not want to spend $500-700 for one. I build my own art canvases for my artwork and everything needs to be as closed to perfect as possible, sanding has become a no longer enjoyable task lol. So thank you, This is the best thorough review for this machine. Thank you and you gained another subscriber. Off to the Depot!!!
As you pointed out the blade can be shifted ever so slightly to the left or right. When installing shift one to the left and the other to the right. WHEN you get a 'chip' in the blade you can the just shift the blade opposite to the way they were set and you can eliminate the chip marks on your board.
Thank you for the detailed review you explained it well. I am looking for a bench top planer, I have only used handheld planers this was very informative.
Seems like a decent unit. Always wondered though why the price of these almost doubles when stepping up to a 13” planer. Bigger motor maybe? Just seems kinda bonkers to spend a few hundred bucks more for half an inch more. Disregard the obvious open door for puns there lol.
Silly question from Australia......... Can you flip the board on its edge and plane the edges? Example - on a 4x2 can you plane the 2 to 1.5 and then flip the board on its edge and plane the 4 to 3.75? And if so, what is the thinnest board you can flip on the edge? I use a bit of 3 x1/4 inch material and would like to reduce the 3 to something narrower.
gday steve, yes , i have seen people clamp 2 or 3 boards together on the edge and run them through the planer with the clamps on or trim the edge on table saw. good luck.
This is a terrible review because it makes me want to go out and buy the Ryobi planer. Seriously, though: this is the first review I've seen by you. I am completely amazed at how thorough you are. I immediately subscribed to you channel. (Oh, and a thumbs up, too.) Excellent stuff. I'm off to Home Depot to get one of these.
Is there a MINIMUM board thickness that can be planed? Like can it plane standard fence boards? Also, can you plane something that has paint on it to quickly remove paint instead of having to sand it or would this damage the planer?
Yes using a series of blades designed to cut down the thickness of wood in 1/16 inch increments , to remove millimeter thin paint, along with the accumulated paint debris, would damage a wood planer. *sigh*
That model is made for a few companies like powertec and harbor freights Bauer there all almost exactly the same the just spec a few things differently like where the reset button is
nice...has this planer been out long....i have not seen this.or maybe hvnt thought about ryobi, but i own a few...do you know how it fares to any other models..thx
Bought the planer about 6 months ago, it jammed and the gearbox broke; tried to get a new gearbox and all sites say "no longer available"; basically threw away $400 as I can't get the gear to fix it. Tools break, and a big part of my interest in purchasing a particular one is based on the availability of replacement parts to extend their lives. I bought this model because my last RYOBI AP 12 lasted over 20 years--obviously, RYOBI's follow-thru and support of their products is no longer effective.
You seem to be cough somewhere between giving a review and giving a tutorial. This makes for a confusing video. Just pick one and go with it - either a tutorial on how to use, or a review of the product.
My buddy bought this. He was only running 2x4 r thru it and it burnt up in 2 hours. Don't buy this planner. He came over and borrowed my back up Dewalt 734 planner.
If it was running constantly I can easily see this planer failing. This is a beginner level planer, not meant for constant and extended use without breaks.

Good tip
Feed the boards in on an angle, helps reduce sniping
Thank you

Who's going to hate this video? It's was super helpful and informative. Thank you.
Ryobi fanboys would be my guess...

Same here. I retired last year and I need a retirement hobby. Haha. My first project is making a computer desk.

Great explanation extremely helpful thks.
Thank you so much!!! For taking the time to show us. Very good tutorial!!!!!
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching.
Really good review. All business. Thanks a lot.
Can you show in more detail how to adjust the in feed table and the out feed table to less having snipe. Thank you 🙏🏾
Man, that Ryobi is almost exactly like the HF Bauer.

I’m no expert but I’d say ya it could

*sigh*
what is the shortest length board that ca go through this planer?
Is the motor the same as the ridgid ?
How do you fix it when one side is higher than the other?
That model is made for a few companies like powertec and harbor freights Bauer there all almost exactly the same the just spec a few things differently like where the reset button is
So the Ryobi planer dont have its own blower like Dewalt does?
I hope ryobi is paying you, you totally sold me on their product

Why does my planer hang up

Mind if I ask if you tried to go through warranty?
The frist pass did not even cut you can tell bye the sound it made when it did cut
I was really surprised how loud the cutting was on 1/2 a turn.
my dewalt 734 no snipe at all right out of the box .two years later still no snipe.....i take very small cuts
Details are good but boy o boy that noise could've been masked in the edit...
Enough about the snipe..good god
so its the wen planer with yellow plastic
This is the same unit as the Wen PL1252 (same woman different dress) Check around as the WEN is selling as low as $308
That's green

these all screw up the ends of boards folding plates are never level no matter what kind of adjustments you make.
It's definitely an entry level planer, and you have to true it up regularly. Thanks for watching.
Why are we yelling???
NOT AFFOEDABLE NOW.
Another offshore tool. Imagine that!
My two cents (which will save you money and frustration): Don't use it on expensive wood! Goodby!
“Good Buy” hehe
My buddy bought this. He was only running 2x4 r thru it and it burnt up in 2 hours. Don't buy this planner. He came over and borrowed my back up Dewalt 734 planner.
Lol
Did he return and get money or replacement or buy replacement parts?
