  • There are 2 Big changes coming to the 24/25 FAFSA re: 529 plans! And they are GOOD changes!
Student's will no longer have to report distributions as untaxed income from grandparent owned 529 plans and parents will no longer have to report the total value of all 529 plans for all children on the FAFSA. They will only have to report the value of the 529 plan for the child they are filling out the FAFSA for. This is GREAT news!

If you are the parent of a rising (or current) high school senior, be sure to check out my FAFSA & Financial Aid Academy here, www.thefafsaguru.com/fafsa-fi...
This virtual program runs every year from September 1st and runs through May 31st and registration is open for parents of Class of 2024 HS graduates.
There are three different levels of service in the Academy for you to choose from, depending on how closely you want to work with me throughout the senior year financial aid process.
    ✨BASIC, PLUS and PRO.
Last year the PLUS and PRO levels filled up and I had to cut off registration early as I limit the number of families in these levels so that I can provide quality services to them.

How The Financial Aid Academy was born. 🤩
When I started this business I quickly realized that 90% of my clients and people reaching out to me for questions were parents of high school seniors navigating the overwhelming financial aid process for the first time.
Often times they came to me in sheer panic 😫when the financial aid offers rolled out not knowing how they were going to afford college tuition.
    _________________
So I set out to create an AFFORDABLE coaching program specifically for them that spanned the entire senior year to help them:
✅ Get prepared before that time came so there were no surprises
✅ Better understand the financial aid process and feel less stressed navigating it
✅ Fill out the FAFSA and CSS Profile (if required) correctly and avoid common mistakes that could cost them thousands of dollars
✅ Stay on track and not miss important deadlines
✅ Find colleges their families could
✅ Access all the financial aid they are entitled to
✅ Maximize their financial aid offers
✅ Feel more secure and confident while having direct access to a professional who has worked in the financial aid field for over 30 years.
I have helped hundreds of families navigate the overwhelming financial aid process and get the best aid offers possible through my Financial Aid Academy.
On average, families who enroll in the Academy receive an additional $25,000 - $35,000 in financial aid over the course of 4 years on top of their regular financial aid offers and often times even more! 💰

Could you please cite the source for the 529 info regarding sibling accounts? When I researched it, everything I have read says we have to claim all three of our kids' 529 accounts as parent assets on our son's fasfa application. I would love to have the source of this info you could provide it. I couldn't find anything about it on the Fasfa website.

Is the second change just for grandparents? Would it apply to any other relatives, such as an uncle?

Isn't there a loophole here? I could put myself as the benecifiary of my 529 account during the FAFSA process time and later change the beneficiary to my kid so I can use the 529 money for their college expense.

I wish I saw this before I started this year! I lumped both 529 amounts together when i was doing my parent portion. I just went back to try to update but cannot seem to do so. Any tips on how to get back into the form to update?

Do you know if divorced parents need to included 529 plan distributions when figuring out which parent supplied more financial support?

Could you please cite the sibling 529 rule? I’ve submitted FASFA not including sibling’s plan but am seeing conflicting reports on whether it should be included on parent investment and have no idea if I need to correct form.

I will have a college freshman next year, along with a HS senior, and have (2) 529 plans. For the FAFSA this year, I can move all the 529 money into the account of my soon to be HS senior and will not have to claim it for my soon to be college bound freshman?

Thanks for your help!!! I have a quick question, if I have a property abroad that I don't pay taxes on in the US, do I have to include it in the FAFSA?
