    You're explaining amazingly well!!
It's just an intro to hearing, I know, but it kinda gave me the confidence that I needed to start expirimenting and exploring on my own - thanks 😊

It is important to have a Foundation in the Basic Fundamentals of Music or /any Craft... Because of being born in Chaos.. I hear Music as just Moving Sounds.. I know Music is an Audible Numerical Language. I can surely Create it, but the Spirit of Relative Pitches & Interval are Elusive to me... I Can tell by the Structure of these Exercises, Everyone will develop their Skills. We must Remember to Listen & Practice Each Day... Love Self, Protect Life, Cultivate d' Beautiful, Peace.!!!

Question of Perfect Pitch... We develop our Best Language Skill from Birth to the age of 7 years old.. Music Listening skills are Developed at those times.. Chinese Should have an Advantage due to the system of Tones... But Some might Say No, it's Not So... Trauma & Chaos can Cause a Child to Shut Their Listening Skills Down.. If One is Exposed to Music at an Early age & they have a Gift, they can become Great Musicians if they develop it.. Love Self, Cultivate Gifts, Peace...

I've tried playing piano with my ears, but it only sounds slightly better than when I use my fingers! 🤣😂🤣 (I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself.) Thanks, for the good video, and all of your others.

These exercises are great and exercises 2 & 5 seem particularly useful and could probably be combined. However, I, for one, would like literally hundreds of these exercises in gradually increasing difficulty as I can see they would lead to genuine progress. You've said in the notes that you're willing to make a series of these (and that would be great) but I think it would be too much to expect you to make that many. I wonder if there is a resource somewhere that already has this?

I wish I had unlimited time to make ALL the videos! I really do...but for now, I'd check out Dozen a Day books. While the graphics look a little outdated, I think they do a great job of offering progressive exercises without getting "boring". If you end up getting these, let me know what you think!

As for if u wanna be able to recognise notes without touching keyboard. I think u better aquant or learn one octave like C or C# fully ( vocal way) and learn difference how flat or sharp notes differ from its pure note so that u can always make flat or sharp note of any note from your learned octave. And I think u all set to go. That way u have notes base in your mind to compare any note no matter what.
And perfecting a octave isnt a feeble task I guess u will have to practice a lot that too vocaly. Doesn't matter if u can vocal like mastero .. your mind will anchor better quality sound inside.Which the true objective of whole process.
Me no musician but I just brought a keyboard and deviced this strategy for myself after going through all those interval and tone detection thing that is going on on net. Only if I cud have also find whats the use of it after all in learning bollywood somgs tunes.. which my sole objective here. I mean I can find notes of a bollywood songs most times true to its scale by just hearing it. yeah its not in one go but u always can find right sounding key one key up or one key below.. hit and trail method I mean. 😀
And as for your chopin sonata and whatever stuff... I dont give a damn. I dont wanna join tom and jerry company. That music just good for that. I wud never hear that kinda music without cartoon show. Thats they are worthy pf as far as I am concern. 😀
But even here for music fills within songs here u need fair enough speed I guess not so for playing most lyrics though.
Well anyway lets hope for the best though currently I find it hard to play smoothly.
I can bloody easily guess that notes but cant play those notes in smooth manner. But its jus a lil while I been trying piano .. and my finger joints already felt tight especially when I woke up in the morning... hell with these pressure sensitive keys. I mean first few days I coudn't press those. They felt so awkward. 😀😂
But now its lil better. And yeah I think it will be better but problem I see is to play both hand simultaneously I think that gonna need lots of efforts but thats not my immediate concern ... my only concern is I am lefty and the instrument is build for right hand ppls. 😀
But anyway you suppose to learn both hand way anyhow I guess so not that problem. I think now I not far bad on my right hand than left main one.
One thing is I dont have to worry about left being weak but right melody hand is another problem. But its going well. In start I had problem but now its not worse than my left as far as at least my music keyboard is concern.
Actually I came out to be very typical spicie. I mean I bowl in cricket with my left but bat with my right. Do heavy stuffs with my left but write with my right hand. Shoot pistol with left but shoot rifle with my right shoulder.. and blah blah blah. So I am kinda mixup guy. 😀
But benefit of it trying my right hand on keyboard wasn't that bad after all. I mean it felt awkward at first but no so much though.

am I hopeless? I naturally sing solfege when I play piano. is it detrimental? I am 73 from Taiwan. English alphabet not convenient to my old brain.

I’ve been cursed with a terrible ear. I can do exercise 1 and 2 fine. But when it comes to guessing all the intervals I just cannot. Playing by ear is near impossible for me. Can I compensate with developing advanced sight reading skills? Do I need to have good ears to sight read very well? Can I purely focus on the visuals on the sheet and sight read it? When i practice my sight reading I can actually sometimes hear how the piece will go or at least the first one or 2 measures or certain phrases like eight notes descending in steps or a cadence. But just playing by ear is something that I have no interest in doing. I’ve tried to practice the skill but it’s to no hope. It seems like my ear gets better when I train sight reading rather than dedicated ear training because when I’m sight reading I can see the notes and intervals and imagine how they sound, then actually play then and see if I were correct. I understand my ear is a disadvantage but playing by ear isn’t my goal. My goal is to be able to play expert level classical pieces, and play all sorts of new music through sight reading. I don’t think I’d need a stellar ear for this right? I may be over exaggerating, because honestly ever since taking sight reading seriously, I feel I can guess how the piece will sound better than when I first started playing 2 years ago. So it’s improving, even if only a little bit

Hi Derrick! I'm like you in that I'm not great at playing by ear. I don't believe it's been a hindrance because my goals and career aspirations were centered around classical music performance and accompanying. Being able to "hear" music when you look at sheet music is a wonderful and important skill, which it sounds like you have. So I'd say, keep doing what you're doing, and if you have extra time, throw in a little ear training. Good luck!

@@PianoRoadmap your response is what I was already thinking and it was good to hear it from you, a very accomplished pianist! Started learning at 18 and am now 20. I won’t stop playing until I die. Really honing in on all the technique and theory I’ll need for the rest of my life. Luckily I was blessed with good coordination so I don’t have to work too hard on certain things others struggle with. One of my goals is to be skilled enough to teach and accompany/duet with my own child at least in their beginning stages of learning. That is when I have a kid 😂.

These exercises are useful - but not for beginners. To begin playing by ear the player needs to tap out well-known tunes, just using the index finger of the right hand in the middle of the piano. Provided the rhythm and the intervals are available from memory most people will be able to play a lot of simple tunes. Trial and error. Then they need to use several fingers, still with the right hand, to play the same tunes. Then develop a simple harmony using the left hand. Guidance is needed for this step. Then, and only then, should the newbie start thinking about performing these Piano Road Map exercises. As for the '12 Major Key Challenge' offered by the same You Tuber..... I can only say that this is way beyond what is necessary for someone to become a competent 'by ear' player. And beware of anyone trying to teach 'chord progressions' to a person who just wants to play well by ear. They are traditional piano teachers who are trying to package their music school knowledge for the 'by ear' market. 12 years ago I taught myself to be a competent 'by ear' player and I often play in front of audiences. And I learned by following the approach given above. Keep it simple. Trial and error - plus a bit of guidance from someone who has been at the game a bit longer.

What u mean by playing with ears ... finding right notes when u hear a song or being able to play it right away without single faulty key press in one go? .. I think for first u dont need any that sort of specialize training and for second u have to be familiar with keyboard playing itself your sub conscious mind will form the association by itself and u will hit the right key most cases in one go. ... No? 😀

Thanks for your questions! Playing by ear = being able to play something on the piano after hearing it or hearing something in your head and being able to play it. It doesn't need to be perfect. While some have a natural ability to play by ear, most do not and need training to improve. It's called "aural skills". And of course, you need to be familiar with the keyboard, but again, not everyone's mind makes subconscious associations with what they hear and the keyboard.
