I've got a Legion Go & took it on vacation this year, it's a great device but big & cumbersome. I'm very likely to buy the Ally X & sell my Go. My Rom collection is huge that 2280 as standard is a real winner that's 4TB of internal with a 1TB sd card, the only thing I'll need to adjust to is the screen size but it's looking good for me.

Yhh the legion go is a beast but somehow the Vrr on the ally sold me. To me Vrr has never been a selling point to me when it comes to handheld or monitors until i tried squeezing my gaming watt to 10 & 15 watts for a longer battery life and that where vrr shines. Most of the games i play at 10watts has framerate dips but when you turn on vrr you dont notice it. It just plays smoothly
I own an Ally, my next handheld can wait until DLSS arrives on handhelds. Switch 2 is rumored to have DLSS so it's only a matter of time before we get quality upscaling/frame gen.
DLSS on mobile handhelds would essentially require an Nvidia APU but idk if we're getting that any time soon lol. Switch is a special case since it's only a console but outside of that only Valve could theoretically make something like that happen in the PC handheld space and it seems like they're sticking with AMD since they''re open source (for now at least)
I modded my steamdeck to have nvidia dlss. Yes it is possible to make an amd steamdeck have dlss. On assassin's creed mirage I get 20 fps more. Works perfectly but the setup is a bit hard

Make sure to reach out to your state attorney general if you get RMA issues with Asus. That’s the easiest way to hold them accountable. Asus is required by law to respond to their inquiries.

if you buy a Rog Ally X from a retail store like Best Buy, will that store handle any warranty issues and problems? Or no matter what it will always have to go back to ASUS for these things?
I use the Total Membership and I have warranty for anything I buy at BestBuy so if I would to buy this and I have a problem I can take it back to bestbuy and either exchange it for a new one or get store credit I believe
The ROG Ally X is worth it for me but it is really up to the consumer. Is upgrading a phone every year worth it, to some yes others no. If you don’t have any handheld it’s a def go. The changes made to this mid cycle refresh were needed and should’ve been this way from the start, no different from the OG steam deck which IMO wasn’t worth it. The price is higher however when you look at the product as a whole, the expense is relative. I will be selling my Oled steam deck as the upgrades now are worth it from my og ally that I returned. The larger battery much improved armory crate and the other things mentioned are worth it and comes standard with 1tb ssd. I want a place for all my games and unfortunately steam deck for me doesn’t cut it with all the hoops and work arounds. The display is great on my Oled but the 16:10 aspect ratio sucks when 90 percent of games don’t support it and end up with less screen real estate or a stretched image. The reason asus doesn’t have an Oled is because no company is making small VRR Oled panels so I’ll def take the 16:9 aspect high quality LCD with 1080p and VRR. Aside from initial set up on the ally taking about an hour or so while docked and hooked up to a kbm and monitor I really never used windows so it’s not a big deal. I have a built high end 4k gaming desktop and windows literally just copied my profile over and I uninstall anything I don’t need on my hand held. Both are great devices and fit whoever’s needs. I’ll be purchasing through Best Buy so I don’t have to worry about any RMA issues.
I had the Ally, and now I have the Legion Go and the Steam Deck OLED. I really do love the SD and Go but I really wish a company would make one of these with a 8” 1080p or higher OLED screen and make it comfortable to hold. The Ally screen is too small. The Legion Go screen is amazing but it’s too heavy and uncomfortable. The SD is only 800p and it’s hard to set up to play windows only games. The MSI Claw 8 AI looks pretty cool but I don’t think it’s OLED. Just waiting for the perfect handheld but it feels like it’s a long ways away.

you are right , I also have them all , the best feeling is actually the PS Portal , they have 1080p 8inch and is very comfortable because you are actually holding a regular controller , too bad is only a remote screen

Still debating myself whether or not I should get one for YT purposes as i am currently an owner of SD, LEGO, and OG ALLY. Loving my LEGO right now so its tough justifying another $800 purchase. In this economy, if you already have an ROG Ally or SteamDeck OLED, stay where you are(I am). Windows OS is a crippling experience, overall, but the ROG Ally does play the AAA games I like -- but not worth ANOTHER $700
Not to mention if you really need windows you can dual boot on steam deck and play those games when required. It's not ideal, but in this economy that's way better than spending another 700$, it's well worth the time spent in setting up dual boot.
I just purchased the OLED Steam Deck a couple months ago and immediately didnt like that I couldnt play certain games that used specific anti cheat software so I pre ordered the Ally X. But for someone who doesnt have the desire to play those games, I agree with you, may not be worth it. Also windows is not a big deal at all for those who already have a PC and used to tinkering. I actually prefer the windows operating system over Linux for familiarity sake. Not to mention that the Ally X out performs steam deck and original Ally every way. Could care less about the OLED screen especially since I will be upgrading to a VRR screen on the Ally X. I dont think VRR is talked about enough and how important that is for handhelds right now. Way improved battery, more memory and overall better design and cooling gets my vote. May keep the steam deck or sell to a buddy at a discount but I dont think my Steam Deck will be getting much use after I get the Ally X in my hands. I think it would be a harder upgrade coming from original Ally in my opinion.

@joem8581 The only reason I see some people go for Steam deck is because of that feel of "console interface" via Linux. If you have any games outside of steam library, I would go for Asus Rog Ally, because it's possible to play them right out of the box. I have Rog Ally and I never had any problems because of Windows, on the contrary- this is the system I am used on and having it on the small screen caused me zero issues. Games having "steam compatibility" mark means I can run them on Rog as well, but some games can run on Rog which can't be run on Steam Deck...

You can get a ROG Ally Z1E for around 375 euro used here. Choosing a new 899 Ally X over this is not worth it to me. I use the Ally as a secondary system to play certain games around the house so it wil do fine.
I wish handheld makers would work on getting screens with thinner bezels. It makes a surprising amount of difference. Thick bezels can be really distracting. Even the Steam Deck OLED's slightly thinner bezel make a lot of games look better.
Should they decide to bring back the XGm port for the next generation, I will consider a new model then. The XG Mobiles have made gaming very smooth for both extreme and non-extreme models. Also, an option for 32GB ram would be great as well.
Biggest bummer is that everyone except Asus had a black handheld, and then Asus goes and makes their new model only available in black. That'll make em stand out for sure :-(
I’m on the fence between the X at $800 or the Z1 Extreme for $550. Seems kinda sketch they don’t want you guys releasing metrics comparing the performance
Performance won't be drastically different anyways, just a mild bump from the RAM speeds and it's a common practice to embargo performance metrics to release day or the day before in the tech industry whether they're confident of its performance or not.
I think I'll go for the base ally z1e. I am an engineer and i can take care of my device. I'm not willing to pay for a "Console like experience" and then pay again for overpriced games. If you think about it, ally makes sense a lot more than steam deck or switch 2. Rdr is such an old game and it was 60usd at launch for the switch. Are you having a laugh, Nintendo?

I got my first edtion ally extreme z sent away about a month ago cuz the screen just like started showing rainbows sent it away and they fixed everything including the faulty sd card slot and didnt cost me a cent cause of warranty so asus anit too bad in my experience but i don't doubt there has been some bad experiences
The original Ally was horrible in terms of battery life and buggy performance, and it even ends up crashing some games sometimes for some reason, I really hope they fixed all these issues in the Ally X, Well we'll just have to wait and see
I had to return mine because it ran some games horribly on low sets and those games werent even demanding when yt influencers showed the same games stable 60s on medium settings now idk if they are faking it or smthn ive read some people had same issues like mine ive tried to reach the support and after i got downvoted to hell on reddit because im trying to solve my issue tried all their solutions literally it had the same performance 😅😅 😢
Not at 800usd i tried a msi claw ultra7 i got for 600usd sent it back. It wasn't as bad as reviews seem to make it but tue steamdeck OLED sens better for 550 waiting for ups today for it!
But how are you playing anti-cheat games on the SD OLED and Triple AAA games on a stable fps? And all these workaround to get game pass working is also a headache.
Practically same hardware, so no. Either lower your games' settings, play different games, connect an eGPU or stop using an SD card to play games, as it could cause stutters due to overheating.
Them dumping the xg mobile support is annoying as hell. This is not an ally 2.0. I don't understand why they jumped the gun with USB 4.0. Could have waited.

Sold my original ally and I had this preordered but I ended up canceling. Its summer and dont really have time to game anyways. Im gonna wait for some full reviews. Its alot of money for a handheld I did enjoy my OG though besides battery life. I might just wait to see what comes out next year. Honestly wish steam would build something with a little more power. It looks like it struggles with some games compared to the ally but it looks much more comfortable and more user friendly.
My favorite part about the X is that I had a LOT of arguments with Ally owners about how Asus gimped the Ally intentionally because they planned on selling you the same device twice. They didn't agree, and now they have to decide if they are going to buy the non-gimped Ally......shortly before the 9000 series handhelds drop.
What are you talking about ? All devices do this. Steamdeck sold a crappy handheld with an insane amount of flaws and now they have the Oled which is the same device but with improvements that where necessary since they were so behind the competition. Most of those people paid twice for a steamdeck. So not sure what argument you think you won but is a fact that all tech moves this way.

It depends on what games you really wanne play. If you are like me you like very nice visuals and dont plan to play much AAA Games the Steam Deck OLED is perfect. I like AAA games but if I want to play them I do it on my Gaming Pc or Ps5. My Steam Libary is very big! I love Indie games and I want long gamings sessions with my littel Games in my bed. So the Steam Deck is my Nr 1 choice! I will not regret it if Steam Deck 2 comes out I buy it too! #plugandplay Still if you want bigger perfomance like 60 fps in many AAA Games go with Ally or Legion. I think the Ally X is for its upgrades much to expensive. If you want the X version wait till it has a discount. 800 bucks is not worth it. Also Asus coustmer support is bad as hell. Keep that in mind. IF you have problems with your handheld to solve the problems it will be much harder than on the SD OLED.
God no. I will never buy another product from Asus as I have no wish to ever again be subjected to their customer service and rma process... which will almost certainly happen as their build quality is garbage

I’ve had multiple ASUS gaming laptops and NEVER had one single issue. Now I will say they dropped the ball at first with the Ally and the SD card situation but that doesn’t just wipeout all the good products they’ve had over the years. All companies have wrinkles that need ironing, piling on constantly and trying to push your view of ASUS on everybody else is just lame. First off, Asus is not trying to compete with Steam Deck; nobody is trying to compete with Steam Deck. Asus is trying to compete with companies like Legion, OnexPlayer, etc. The simplest PC handheld out there is fatter and better than the Steam deck, and only people who want PS1 graphics would pick the Steam deck again. Asus is trying to compete with other high-end PC handhelds, not some PS1 graphics handhelds like the Steam Deck.

Asus has its problems but I'm satisfied and have the lenovo legion go and steam deck

@@joem8581 what game do u play? cuz some games are definitely not playable at all from the steam deck, while the rog especially the rog ally x can play literally any games out there. like game from ps1, ps2, ps3, psp, xbox, nintendo wii. and of course steam games. also ally can use xbox game pass. to be fair steam deck user interface is amazing, but u can only play steam games on it and not even all of them are playable, cuz a lot of developer hasnt develop their games on steam os thats based on linux. so if u want a monster gaming machine with lots of library choose rog ally, and if u have the money choose the newer one (rog ally x) . if u want to just play simple game on steam, and u already have lots of simple game on steam and love the steam big picture mode and more affordable price, choose the steam deck. oh yeah i wanna add something about the screen (Yes lots of people gonna love the OLED steam deck has) Steam Deck use a 800p monitor its pretty decent with 90hz refresh rate BUT this the biggest problem come. They dont have free sync vrr natively on the steam deck monitor, they only support vrr for external monitor using the steam deck docking station. wtf man cmon steam deck. While the rog ally has 1080p with 120hz freesync vrr. that is awesome and even bigger battery than the steam deck (rog ally x battery is 80wh) that is awesome. Its like 2-3 hour triple a gaming with good performance. while on steam deck you cannot get same gaming performance with same battery performance as the rog ally. (simple note: rog ally x better ram, better cpu, better gpu, better battery, better screen for competitive gaming, better games library i mean u can literally play any games on it. while the steam deck better user interface, better screen for outdoor gaming its oled bro its amazing) but personally im gonna choose the rog ally x cuz i have the money and of course i wanna have better gaming machine performance and larger battery

You can get a ROG Ally Z1E for around 375 euro used here. Choosing a new 899 Ally X over this is not worth it to me. I use the Ally as a secondary system to play certain games around the house so it wil do fine.

I wish handheld makers would work on getting screens with thinner bezels. It makes a surprising amount of difference. Thick bezels can be really distracting. Even the Steam Deck OLED's slightly thinner bezel make a lot of games look better.
Im planning on buy an Ally X but I guess I should wait for year end sales as it will likely go down at least $50 to $100.

Should they decide to bring back the XGm port for the next generation, I will consider a new model then. The XG Mobiles have made gaming very smooth for both extreme and non-extreme models. Also, an option for 32GB ram would be great as well.

Performance won't be drastically different anyways, just a mild bump from the RAM speeds and it's a common practice to embargo performance metrics to release day or the day before in the tech industry whether they're confident of its performance or not.

I think I'll go for the base ally z1e. I am an engineer and i can take care of my device. I'm not willing to pay for a "Console like experience" and then pay again for overpriced games. I got my first edtion ally extreme z sent away about a month ago cuz the screen just like started showing rainbows sent it away and they fixed everything including the faulty sd card slot and didnt cost me a cent cause of warranty so asus anit too bad in my experience but i don't doubt there has been some bad experiences

I wouldn't trust the hardware inside the ally...
The original Ally was horrible in terms of battery life and buggy performance, and it even ends up crashing some games sometimes for some reason, I really hope they fixed all these issues in the Ally X, Well we'll just have to wait and see
We probably have different ally because I never experienced any of those.
I had to return mine because it ran some games horribly on low sets and those games werent even demanding when yt influencers showed the same games stable 60s on medium settings now idk if they are faking it or smthn ive read some people had same issues like mine ive tried to reach the support and after i got downvoted to hell on reddit because im trying to solve my issue tried all their solutions literally it had the same performance 😅😅 😢

Not at 800usd i tried a msi claw ultra7 i got for 600usd sent it back. It wasn't as bad as reviews seem to make it but tue steamdeck OLED sens better for 550 waiting for ups today for it!
But how are you playing anti-cheat games on the SD OLED and Triple AAA games on a stable fps? And all these workaround to get game pass working is also a headache.

Practically same hardware, so no. Either lower your games' settings, play different games, connect an eGPU or stop using an SD card to play games, as it could cause stutters due to overheating.

Sold my original ally and I had this preordered but I ended up canceling. Its summer and dont really have time to game anyways. Im gonna wait for some full reviews. Its alot of money for a handheld I did enjoy my OG though besides battery life. I might just wait to see what comes out next year. Honestly wish steam would build something with a little more power. It looks like it struggles with some games compared to the ally but it looks much more comfortable and more user friendly.
My favorite part about the X is that I had a LOT of arguments with Ally owners about how Asus gimped the Ally intentionally because they planned on selling you the same device twice.
They didn't agree, and now they have to decide if they are going to buy the non-gimped Ally......shortly before the 9000 series handhelds drop.
When are those devices dropping? Really wanna get a hand held but not sure if its better to wait it out
With the 9000 series handhelds, we are going to see higher prices and we're going to be back to 1 hour of battery life.

What are you talking about ? All devices do this. Steamdeck sold a crappy handheld with an insane amount of flaws and now they have the Oled which is the same device but with improvements that where necessary since they were so behind the competition. Most of those people paid twice for a steamdeck.

It depends on what games you really wanne play. If you are like me you like very nice visuals and dont plan to play much AAA Games the Steam Deck OLED is perfect. I like AAA games but if I want to play them I do it on my Gaming Pc or Ps5. My Steam Libary is very big! I love Indie games and I want long gamings sessions with my littel Games in my bed. So the Steam Deck is my Nr 1 choice! I will not regret it if Steam Deck 2 comes out I buy it too!

Still if you want bigger perfomance like 60 fps in many AAA Games go with Ally or Legion. I think the Ally X is for its upgrades much to expensive. If you want the X version wait till it has a discount. 800 bucks is not worth it.
Also Asus coustmer support is bad as hell. Keep that in mind. IF you have problems with your handheld to solve the problems it will be much harder than on the SD OLED.

I’ve had multiple ASUS gaming laptops and NEVER had one single issue. Now I will say they dropped the ball at first with the Ally and the SD card situation but that doesn’t just wipeout all the good products they’ve had over the years. All companies have wrinkles that need ironing, piling on constantly and trying to push your view of ASUS on everybody else is just lame. Apparently I am one of the lucky ones had ROG ally for 1 year and no issues...but I do not know why all PC gamers are always saying it is not a console like experience like the deck....lol you are a PC gamer and complaining about wanting a console experience...I am over 50 did not touch any PC games for 20 years until Balders gate 3...so I only played consoles windows does not bother me much aside from damn updates because I go to apps and just launch games I do not mess with the windows aspect much...ROG ally has taken over my series X as I am not tied to a tv..one of the best game console purchases I have EVER MADE 😊

First off, Asus is not trying to compete with Steam Deck; nobody is trying to compete with Steam Deck. Asus is trying to compete with companies like Legion, OnexPlayer, etc. The simplest PC handheld out there is fatter and better than the Steam deck, and only people who want PS1 graphics would pick the Steam deck again. Asus is trying to compete with other high-end PC handhelds, not some PS1 graphics handhelds like the Steam Deck.
