I am about to turn 53, I was born the year Sesame Street premiered. I remember him well, he was the only Latino I really "knew" through the 1970s through Sesame Street. RIP, comfort man.
Luis and Maria were my favourite characters on Sesame Street. I saw Emilio on CTV News Channel two years ago and he was talking to a reporter, I can't remember which one it was, talking about the movie Street Gang, and I was really excited to see him and I yelled at my mom "MOM COME HERE QUICK! IT'S EMILIO DEGADO!"! I mean this man that I knew who he was but he would have never known who I was personally teaching this little girl from Toronto words and phrases in Spanish. Luis and Maria were my very favourite Sesame Street characters and so when he, Bob McGrath, and Roscoe Orman was forced to retire I was so put off! I mean Emilio and Sonia's characters were so very important to those of us who had watched old skool Sesame Street. It was just ageism in fine form!

Too bad he got kicked out of Sesame Street in Season 46 and I don't know why HBO ever did it, but he did come back in the 50th anniversary celebration. Now, Luis got to see Caroll Spinney, Jerry Nelson, Jim Henson, Richard Hunt, Will Lee (Mr. Hooper), Northern Calloway (David), Joe Raposo, Matt Robinson (Gordon from the first 3 seasons in 1969-1972). If Gabi and Maria were still on Sesame Street and heard about that, then I know they’d miss her father and husband I’d think. And Big Bird would've said, "Now, I'm going to miss you Luis." Elmo would think, "Elmo will too. He always fixed things for Elmo and his friends."
I know right. Luis was another father figure to Sesame Street along with Bob and Gordon, who were dropped from the show by 2016. At least we still have Nina working in the bike shop now. I wish Gabi was still on the show too, even though she decided to leave after season 43 before Maria retired and Luis was let go when she had no other known family member. But if Gabi is still there even after her parents retired from the show, I think she would've been Nina's assistant for the bike shop, just like Alan and Chris at Hooper's Store (even while Chris is still there after his aunt Susan and uncle Gordon and his cousin Miles were dropped). Not to mention, Desiree Casado (who retired from the show after 2012) is also younger than Bob McGrath, Roscoe Orman and Emilio Delgado.
Gina is also slightly younger than Bob, Gordon, Susan, Luis and Maria. She didn’t come along until 1986. But she also left the show as she might’ve not been too happy with Bob, Gordon and Luis being laid off I think. I would’ve also considered Gina, Miles and Gabi my best friends if I lived on Sesame Street. The same goes with Elmo and Big Bird as my most favorite Muppets.

Gina was younger than Gordon, Luis, Bob, Maria, and Susan especially since when she was first seen, she was a student of Gordon where Gordon was taking his students on the roof to see the stars but Gina was late and constantly saying to the muppets "where's Mr. Robinson" (Gordon's last name). I don't know the reason why she was gone from the show but, I know her son Marco is gone from the show too.

I grew up on the farm lands in the central valley of California in the 70's. When I arrived there at 5 yrs old I made primarily Latino friends (children of migrant farm workers), both they and "Luis" taught me enough Spanish as a kid to communicate (poorly I'm sure) with their parents and they loved it, so did I. I've lived in the Mission District of SF for over 20 years now because I can't ever be too far from the people, culture, and food and be content with my life. Rest easy Emilio and thank you.

And as for Sonia Manzano (and Desiree Casado), if you are reading this, I want to say that Delgado was so great on Sesame Street. He taught us some great Spanish words, he helped to understand how great toasters were to use which need to be fixed especially since as they say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day where we need toasters for toast, pop tarts, waffles, etc., raising Gabi, and opening up a bike shop for Nina to work at. Also, he did a great job making Sesame Street nostalgic to us. It’s a shame that we’re losing all the people that were influential in our childhoods when my grandma told me Emilio Delgado died and I saw his face I was like aww no not Luis some people will always hold a special place in your heart. I still remember when mr.hooper died.
@George Master Actually, Luis played by Emilio Delgado got laid off from Sesame Street along with Roscoe Orman (Gordon) and Bob Mcgrath (Bob) where the three of them were told that their contracts were not going to be renewed for the next Sesame Street season and were told to leave the show.

Luis is gone. I love him very much. I want Sesame Street go on every year indefinitely and move back to PBS. Move back from ½ hour to 1 hour long with animated cartoon segments, films, whatever. Starting at 7:00 am. No more PBS.

People on social media were complaining and feeling skeptical about their childhoods being downhill due to that problem. I know that WASN'T Elmo who did it. If time travel will be real soon, I'll bring Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Tango, Charlie, Rudy, and Julia with you, and maybe Abby Cadabby could've used her wand to make all the other SS humans reappear again.

@@jakemiketta3868 Bob McGrath (Bob), Roscoe Orman (Gordon) and Emilio Delgado (Luis) were dropped from Sesame Street when their contracts weren't renewed for Season 46-beyond and the retooling of the show on HBO. People on social media were complaining and feeling skeptical about their childhoods being downhill due to that problem. I know that WASN'T Elmo who did it. If time travel will be real soon, I'll bring Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Tango, Charlie, Rudy, and Julia with you, and maybe Abby Cadabby could've used her wand to make all the other SS humans reappear again.
Maybe I could go back to Sesame Street BEFORE I was born.

@@MarioSonicPhillyFan700 Them too. Death of a celebrity could mean my childhood is going away, even though I was more a 2000s baby when Sesame Street had Elmo’s World. Not to mention, Bob McGrath (who was also let go by 2016) and Frank Oz (who is now a director) have outlived the rest of the cast.

It sad to hear that Luis from Sesame Street played by Emilio Delgado died at 81.
I was in the middle of watching "The Golden Girls" on Hulu where Dorothy's son needed to be independent. Out of the episode's subject, I was about to watch the news and later watch some "Sesame Street" on UA-cam. May Luis rest in peace.
