  • @daowonimdee

    I'm 42, so I was there to know that most of these highlights come from the 95-96 season. Shaq was injured for the first 22 games, and Penny opened the season on FIRE. In the first 22 games while Shaq was away, Penny averaged 26.4 ppg (2nd only to Jordan), 6.8apg, 5.3rbg, 2spg, 1bpg, shooting 50.3% from the field, 35% from 3, and 79% from FT.
    He had 6 games of 30 points or more, and had 42-8-8 in a win over the Nets. The Magic were 17-5 in the win-loss column, again, second ONLY to the Jordan's Bulls (they went 72-10 that season).
    When I was watching, I DID NOT WANT SHAQ TO COME BACK FROM INJURY, because when he did, I knew he would take away the shine from my favourite player: Penny. When he did, the Magic played slower, and finished the season 60-22, and Penny's numbers drop to 21.7, 7.1, and 4.3. Decent, but not MVP numbers. If Shaq didn't come back, Penny would have EASILY been a top 3 MVP candidate even WITH Jordan in the league. He was BETTER than people thought he was, but Shaq took most of the shine..

      When you see them kind of numbers going up, you got to hurry up and get back. Don't wo r the front office to see they don't need you. 😂😂😂 They were built to win it. Even though he was 6'7" I'd argue that he was the quickest NBA player ever. As soon as he gets the ball, he starts this dance with his defender. No matter where on there court! Everyone in the building knew! INCLUDING the guy that's "guarding" him!!! That. he. would. not. have. been. a. ble. to. keep. up...COLD.

    Shaq said when he first saw Penny play on set the movie Blue Chips he thought "Damn this actor is better than most of the guys in the NBA" 🤣 Then after he found out who he was Shaq, who had only just finished his rookie year was able to strong arm his franchise into passing on Chris Webber who was an absolute megastar in college and trade down for Penny. Great decision. Love me some C Webb but Penny was being anointed as the guy who would take the game to a new level kind of within a year of his career. He was this new modern player who had the size, the speed, the IQ, handles, scoring, passing you name it. That's kind of what a modern player is now but back then Penny and Grant Hill were starting to pioneer the positionless game we have today.

Shaq's ego killed it because people started to realize Penny could be the leader of that franchise and the media started dividing them. Crazy how Penny and Ken Griffey Jr. were so many levels above their competitors and both got hurt. They were literally the same people in different sports.

    • @Jmicky34
      @Jmicky34 4 місяці тому +1

      That’s a perfect comparison. I was thinking the same thing. Both Penny and Griffey Jr were arguably the most gifted/talented players to ever play their respective game yet injuries sidelined their careers. I think if Griffey doesn’t get plagued by injuries, he goes down as the undisputed GOAT.

      @bdww4072 you joking right?😂😂 Magic is a great basketball player but a jump shot was not even in his arsenal.

    • @bdww4072
      @bdww4072 5 місяців тому +7

      @@melvinjonesjr1091 Not joking whatsoever and although he preferred the baby hook he absolutely had a jumper. He didn't shoot 3s until his comeback fat man season but during his prime he was hitting that mid range jumper all day.
      I hope you understand that he averaged 20ppg for his career and back then you weren't getting anywhere near 10 layups or any shot at the rim because of the congested lane. Magic had a very nice baseline jumper and also shot well around the free throw line extended.
      His 85%free throw percentage is even more proof he could shoot.
      Save the emojis. I prefer to have a real conversation with data instead of crying or laughing faces because you want to make it seem as if someone disagreeing with you is outrageous.
      Edit: I was wrong about the 3s. He actually shot a more than respectable 38 percent on almost 4 threes a game in 89-90.

    He was the best all rounder PG of all time,
    Truly way way ahead of his time. So much that even today, players cannot copy or execute the moves he did back in the day.
    If it wasnt for his injuries, tehy could have made Magic dynasty right there and then, could have won rings with Shaq still on board and rewrite the very history of NBA.
