I know im late, but i've been taking my top end off and putting a bunch of rags under the piston, then i spin the flywheel until the piston jams itself in the rags. Then i just twist it out! Works both ways
Just remove the spark plug, move the crank just below tdc and shove a length of rope down the spark plug hole. Make sure to have the crank going in the proper direction for removal vs. tightening; you do not want to expose the ports with rope in the cylinder because it will bind the piston.
I used to use a hammer handle thru the wheel and across the swingarm. Now I use an impact or a holder tool. Basically, it wraps around the flywheel. Mostly, I use that to torque the nut on assembly, impact to remove.
I had the same problem so I got a two X four drilled two holes in it matching the flywheel and used two Long bolts going through the two X four into the flywheel with a ratchet underneath holding the two X four horizontal and turning the ratchet
To remove that nut, I bought a small plastic piece that screws into where the sparkplug goes. It stops the piston from reaching tdc. Nut came off with no issues. I was concerned about the force playing applied to the crank bearings as the piston was being pushed into the plastic stopper. But after many more hours of riding, rod bearing had no play.
That's an interesting method, I never thought of interfering before the flywheel. I would be concerned about damaging the piston crown or stripping out the spark plug hole threads though. But hey, if it worked it worked!
You never put a block of wood between the spokes and the swingarm. Another thing "heard on the internet" was to put a piece of string down the spark plug hole, or use a screw from Tusk racing that stops the piston. Never! You can either use a impact wrench or you can shift it into the highest gear, get a long handled torque wrench and have a buddy in a crouching stance put his whole weight over the back tire holding onto multiple ribs on the tire and have the other guy hit the wrench with a hammer which will free the static friction from the bolt. Works everytime. No bend spokes, no unecessary wear on the main bearing.
The right tool is what I'm looking for, I think I okie-doked it before, it was a while ago, I just want the right tool, MOST of the suppliers, 'ALL' that I find don't have a clue what they are selling, they all sell the same tool that has pins that are like 7 and 9 + mm , that fit nothing that we need. If you look on youtube you find a lot of people that have that spanner, but they don't use it , pins are too big, so they use a two by four, etc, and I have one if I could find it, but I'll bet that it has also got the wrong pins. I need 6mm and 8mm pins, not coming even close to finding it lol. 😢🤪🤪🤔
I’m trying this method the rear wheel isn’t moving but as I’m trying to break the bolt loose it feels like the crank is moving along with the bolt turning so it’s no getting loose. Can anybody help?
What if there’s some oil under the fly wheel? I’ve read many say bad crank seal but my bike barely smokes when I’m riding it, only time it smokes a lot is first start of the day. 32:1 cr250r maybe it’s from pouring too much oil into the bike?
Definitely have a crank seal leak. It will smoke if it's the right side seal letting transmission oil into the crankcase. It will run lean if it's the left side.
Fix Your Dirt Bike I was wondering how to open the flywheel because of leaking oil seal behind it. Today I open it with my newly bought rubber strap wrench and it works! Thanks for your suggestion in the vid.
@@Fixyourdirtbike thanks for your reply! I fixed it. The socket that I inserted under the swing arm and through the sprocket was pivoting. Once i realized that i had to get something longer so i could get more leverage to hold it in place and torque the flywheel. I was in first gear.

I like how this guy actually gets into it right away instead of saying a bunch of bs
3:01 i got mad respect for diy videos that show you how to do it if you don’t have the specialty tools
You deserve millions of subs
Thank god my cranks locked up and I don't have to worry about that 😂
Good job 👍, that was the only way I could get it to work myself. I encountered the same exact issues.

Impact gun and 17mm socket 😉

Nice!
I can't share the picture but I did it with 2 screw drivers X across my rachet in the pre cut holes in the flywheel

Have you ever messed around with the dial indicator on the timing?

I used an impact wrench to remove the flywheel nut. I'd assume there's a reason you didnt use an impact?
I usually do, but I wanted to cover the other methods for those without.
@@Fixyourdirtbike makes sense. I remember the days before I bought my first impact.
where can i buy fly whell weight? does someone send the store link?

@@Fixyourdirtbike Well time for more wrenching, do you have a video for crank seal leaks for the cr250r?
Not the seals themselves, but the are covered in the bottom end rebuild guide.
@@Fixyourdirtbike yeah it’s all good, I found a video expected it to be complicated but actually it’s really simple, quick fix!
Can I use rubber strap wrench to hold the flywheel?
That might work if the strap can hold tight enough. That would be the easiest way if it works. Give it a try and let me know!

Ameizing info
I have a CR 250 1997 and I do a trail. How do I put a headlamp with lighting?
You will need a 12v AC regulator.
Why does the bike continue to turn over when trying to tighten the flywheel nut. I have a screwdriver in the sproket
Did you shift your transmission into 5th gear?
