I was always taught to only take one claw from a stone crab. Yes it’s legal to take both. But statistics show by leaving one, the crab is very very likely to survive to grow another. As the can defend themselves with just one. Years ago I was a tropical invertebrate ecologist, and I just ask that folks take one and leave the other. In my opinion it’s a great idea, as even though you’re throwing a live crab back, it’s odds of survival aren’t very high with no claws.
Same. I guess when regular people go out it's more like how many claws do you need at the end of the day and once you hit your quota turn them lose with an extra claw. At least they're going back into the water either way.

I'm a retired Western Long Island Sound lobsterman 1965-1999. In November I used to catch huge blue crabs in the lobster pots. My favorite meal was one crab and a beer.
I had the best Dungeness in San Fran. My fave are still Stones. I used to love San Fran. I still love Dungeness! Last time I was in San Fran it was like a shanty town! I am in 305 and keep a few traps running as claws have gotten out of control $$$
Her crab cracker reminded me of an old walnut / pecan cracker my Grandfather had and used for YEARS !!! Except his had a Pecan wood base and an adjustable sleeved slot where the nut would lay .. Cool though 👍 And thanks for stirring up an old memory !! 😊 Lost Papa quite a few years back... ❤️👼 God Bless !

@@philipfish50 fair point but they will regen after a few molt cycles, and the female will likely be laying eggs soon and it doesn't really have many predators so it should be okay. It can survive on bottom-feeding and doesn't require that much food if it's not actively growing. Though obv not enough research done on how these fair without both claws.
That is by far the best crab to eat ,my second best is snow crab then king ,then blue crab ,and I can keep on going ,WOW love them crabs ,awesome video thanks bud and Mary's you guys are awesome.

Like you, my favorite crab to eat comes from the ocean. Each one has a different taste and texture, that is what makes all crab my favorite. Even sand fleas, we used to catch them in my younger days living near Newport Beach. Watching your channel and Rob's channel makes me want to get back into fishing and enjoying the ocean.

About 30 years ago when i was a kid i grew up fishing on the 3 mile bridge and channel 5 all weekend remember washing off at buds bathroom lol oh the memories
I was a commercial fishermen off of the Mendocino Sonoma coast In the early 1,980s. It was a drag boat. We were dragging for soul fish, Upon 1 pull we caught a Deep water box crab, 1st time I've ever seen 1. The show was extremely hard, had to use pliers to break the shell. That was definitely the best Most meat crab I have ever ever eaten in my life. I have not had 1 since.
Great haul, that looked amazing! Have you tried steaming the claws? The water dilutes the flavors and oils, whereas steam will seal them in. And its faster, and the steaming liquid tastes amazing! Tight lines.

Y Gabe the best crab I have had is the king crab !! I cook them in beer celery onion an garlic an when they are red they are done !! You don't need butter but I use it anyway they are so sweet !! Great job bud !! I would love to live your life !! Great job again love the videos

You will love mud crab before the isolation I went to Fraser island for 3 days on a house boat with 3 buddies and ate it for the first time and it is the best tasting crab. Mud crab and barramundi you will be in heaven.

It wouldn't be sustainable. Stone crabs do not have the numbers as other species of crabs.
