Hello, nice review. Thinking about getting one. What would you select if you can only have 1: coupe or roadster? As I want to use it also to go on weekend, a short holiday the coupe seems to have more luggage space. On the back-seat you can probably put some trolleys. The roadster of course is more special. Not easy... For the moment my mind is set on the phase 2 coupe ;)
R8 only exists because Dieselgate VW badge engineered Lamborghini, another 1 of their brands (their MLB Evo corporate platform gets sold under a dozen different labels). i8 1 & done, like M1 before it (& original 328, 503, 507, CSL E9 Batmobile, Z8).
@@BlondePoisonn an i8 is a very affordable car and it looks and drives better than the value suggests. I would strongly recommend a low mileage example as lots of cars are available for sale for really cheap money with high miles but BMW will not offer warranty on any car that has 60k miles or more. Shop around and you will get a fantastic car.
Get the roadster. They are brilliant. The coupe is also fantastic. But if you don’t need the extra seats or room then roadster all day. Just a slight word of warning, the roadster has incredibly large blind spots at the rear with the roof up, also both have a huge blind spot with the windscreen pillar so just be careful at roundabouts and junctions.
@@L200ony I am not a fan of fabric/soft tops on cars, and to be honest I really wanted the couple version. It is a shame that the only ones you can get are pre-owned
Great review. In many other reviews it gets criticized for under steering in tight corners. But come on be realistic. Most people will not buy this car in order to race in twisties. It’s so much cheaper to maintain than a Porsche or Ferrari and it will give you the same satisfaction ❤ I will definitely get one in a couple of years!
Unlike other 6 figure performance hybrids I actually see i8 in my neighbourhood, coupe & convertible - NSX hybrid was $100k more here when it debuted same time as i8 Spyder.
Very reliable. Only major issue is the AC compressor which can become faulty with earlier cars, 2014-2016. Especially if car is used at hot temps like Texas, Arizona etc. Majority of the spare parts or service items are from other BMW models, so there's no "i8 premium" on something like brakes, brake pads, so forth. DIY'er can also easily maintain this car; oil changes, spark plugs, coils etc. are dirt cheap and very easy to change. I think that in US the running costs doesn't mean a lot as in general the driving and servicing a sports car is dirt cheap over there. But here in EU this car really found its spot. It costs pennies to run (compared to any other sports car) and yet it has stunning looks and enough performance to be *fun*
@@Gadne92.5 I’ve had a few problems with the white one but the work was covered under the manufacturer warranty that I pay annually for and it was an electric issue that occurred 3 times. But I think it’s sorted now as I’ve not had any problems for a long time

Hi Yasin. I think that you are making a great decision on acquiring the i8. I often drive it in London and I’m the narrow streets of Devon. At first it’s hard to get the bearings of the width however the more you drive it the easier it becomes. Get one with confidence my brother. You will never regret it.
The portable (home 3 pin) BMW charger is defaulted at 8A thus giving really long charging time. There's plenty of 3rd party reliable portable chargers which can be set to 10/12/16A -speeds. And then coupe can be charged under 3 hours. But this needs the 220/240V home socket (EU etc.). In US you'll never get this as the supply voltage is 120V. Of course 16A speed (from a 3 pin wall socket) needs relatively modern or renowned house with good main circuit breakers. I live in a 2017 house and I've charged my former BMW 740Le and current i8 from a house hold socket for over 2 years now - with zero problems.
I would agree! They are fantastic at Plymouth ocean BMW. I’ve just bought an ix from them and I am very happy with that car also. If you see me around Plymouth/south hams/torbay please stop to say hello!
Sounds like about £3,000 a year in expenses ( tax, insurance, share of tyres/ 3 year service/ monthly service plan/ share of dashcam cost). So maybe only an additional £1500 max over any other puddle jumper you might buy ( and you're only making a decision on the extra you'd pay ). For me, the real worry is : what happens when the battery reaches the end of its life ? Will you be able to replace it ? If you can replace it, how much would it cost ? ( I imagine no change from £20,000 ? ). Note : I know nothing.
@@Czechbound the running costs this year on the orange one was £1,085 for the BMW warranty, £585 for tax or thereabouts, the big 3 year service £550, 2 new tyres and mot £600. This has been one of the most expensive years so that’s not too bad. Whereas the white one this year has been £1.085 for warranty, free road tax, no new tyres, £295 service. So a cheaper year for that one. So on reflection on average the annual amount on upkeep is £1,400-£3,500. With the biggest cost being the warranty. I’ve not had to use the warranty but still worth getting for peace of mind.

Hi guys, might be a stupid question, but how does this car go? Always thought was electric, but it seems more like an hybrid? Does it mean I need to both fill the fuel and charging at the station? This looks tedious but I might be mistaken, let me know! Thanks
Hello. It’s just the road tax on the pre 2018 models that is free. With it being hybrid you can run it on electricity only and that makes it very economical indeed. With the cost of electricity going up, it currently works out as about 30 miles to one pound Sterling.
I’m in absolute awe brother, so much perfection so close to each other. I have to ask only because you flexed so hard- what is it that you for a living to afford such lavish lifestyle in the U.K amidst cost of living rises ? Great review btw :)
Had 3 - currently have a Roadster 19 plate. Thrse will be £300,000 coupe and £450,000 Roadster in 30 yrs like my 1978 E26 M1. Only 246 RHD uk Roadsters made rarer than a 993 Rs or 360cs, or 430 scuderia.

I have 2014 model i8 with 55k miles / 89k km on the odometer and I took it to a BMW Main Dealer in order to perform so called "BMW battery health check" test. It takes like a whole working day and costs something like 400 euros. My battery health was 94% and I got a official BMW Certificate for it. I can achieve 30-32km of pure electrical range when driving sensible on B-roads with speeds like 70-80kph. AC OFF (yet HVAC ON) and "Eco Pro" -mode enabled. The 2019 -> has much bigger High Voltage battery pack thus giving easily over 50km of real world range. EDIT: Some EV Tech said that the battery condition can really differs if the car has been regularly charged to 100% via "charging port" versus its been charged only while driving (which takes it only up to 70%). Latter does not do good for the longevity of the High Voltage battery condition...
No problem sire! I've owned mine, MY2014 vehicle for 14 months now and I did daily drive it for the first 8 months as it was my only vehicle. I have had zero issues between 72k km -> 89k km. Insuring it is dirt cheap, annual "road tax" is dirt cheap, there's parking perks for low emission vehicles, etc. Nothing but perks compared to even most basic "996/997" generation Porsche 911. Only downsize is the artificial sound piped into the cabin via speakers. I'd rather turn it OFF but you cant. Its louder in SPORT-mode so I rarely use that mode during commuting. But to each their own 🙂 I can charge my car in my home and in my work thus my MPG is real high, under 4L/100km which is like 70 MPG UK. Also I do charge it when driving longer distances if the motorway services happens to have a charger available. During one hour lunch stop the car charges up to 60-70%, at least here in EU. Happy to answer any Q you might have. Also there's this YT'er called "Pats Garage Online", he has tons of vids about i8 common / known issues.

@@L200ony That's one of the "known issues" of the i8. The protective plastic cover of the door wiring harness is rubbing against the tube which comes out of the front fender. Kind of hard to explain but here's good video about it: ua-cam.com/video/35mnE1RC1mI/v-deo.html

Bought a blue one 2 years ago when I was 25, written off by a granny and bought a protonic red edition. The protonic red is my dream car!

That copper/orange roadster is a looker!
Dude what do you do for a living to be about to afford two? Love to see it, taking it as inspiration, congrats brother!
Roadster only has space for soft bags. A lot of backseat space in the coupe, 2 x medium-sized suitcases will squeeze in.
I would go for the coupe. It is more practical. It has more luggage space and in an emergency it has an extra 2 seats. Enjoy the car!
Great video , I was about to buy an R8 v8 but now I am having second thoughts
Are these cars expensive?
Thanks for your review. I'm planning to buy the roadster soon since BMW doesn't produce the coupes anymore
What roadster be specific there's a lot of roadster's
@@EAD_0 you're comment made me lose braincells so only bmw make roadster's I guess 💀

Great review. In many other reviews it gets criticized for under steering in tight corners. But come on be realistic. Most people will not buy this car in order to race in twisties. It’s so much cheaper to maintain than a Porsche or Ferrari and it will give you the same satisfaction ❤
I will definitely get one in a couple of years!
I think as a daily driver it’s head and shoulders above it’s competition
Unlike other 6 figure performance hybrids I actually see i8 in my neighbourhood, coupe & convertible - NSX hybrid was $100k more here when it debuted same time as i8 Spyder.
Thanks for the review. I’m considering getting rid of my SL Mercedes 500 convertible to get one.
I do love the SL500. But the i8 is a different level. The kerb appeal is unparalleled
Calgary Green oil lawyer friend traded her SL for Prius & never regretted it, i8 hybrid will be step up.
Great video, how is the reliability? And how much you spend on one year of maintenance? Stunning car
@@bradquintero7932 I would say between £1,500-£3,500 a year but that includes BMW warranty. Lovely cars well worth the money.

Im currently on a 1 series coupe and looking to pick one of these up next year as my daily. my only worry is the drive as ive been on the road for only 2 years now (20) and live in london. whats your experience with it driving on narrow city roads if there is any at all. cheers for the review
Hi Yasin. I think that you are making a great decision on acquiring the i8. I often drive it in London and I’m the narrow streets of Devon. At first it’s hard to get the bearings of the width however the more you drive it the easier it becomes. Get one with confidence my brother. You will never regret it.
how are you gonna afford one of these as your daily?
Prices have dropped & running costs less than exotic ICE.
How long do they take to charge at home on 3 pin? What range can you get in total?
Hi bro. The coupe takes 6 hours and gives 15-20 miles. The roadster takes 12 hours and gives 30-35 miles. The petrol engine gives 250+ miles

Love the look of this car. I have a Lexus 450h gs f sport same concept.
That is one of my favourite cars. People don’t appreciate how amazing it is. Not only that but the Lexus looks great too! Good choice bro
I’ve not had to use the warranty but still worth getting for peace of mind.
i love this car i hope to own both as well one day.

Hello. It’s just the road tax on the pre 2018 models that is free. With it being hybrid you can run it on electricity only and that makes it very economical indeed. With the cost of electricity going up, it currently works out as about 30 miles to one pound Sterling.
What’s top speed you’ve had out this mate ? How much you spending on fuel ?

Thanks for the good Review! Can you (or someone Else) Tell me about the battery capacity? Heard over the years the range gets Smaller. Atm looking to get one for myself. Tia 🫱🏽🫲🏾
@@Gadne92.5 Thank you
No problem sire!
But to each their own 🙂
I can charge my car in my home and in my work thus my MPG is real high, under 4L/100km which is like 70 MPG UK. Also I do charge it when driving longer distances if the motorway services happens to have a charger available. During one hour lunch stop the car charges up to 60-70%, at least here in EU.
