    As I have been enjoying my Harley Benton Kit I thought it would be interesting to compare different pickups of different prices and brands. Which one do you like the best and did you guess correctly during the blind test?

      I personally like the roswell they sort of have a p90 sound to me. The fender are ok but naw not for the price. . The kit ones were ok.

    For me, the Roswell's sounded by far the best. I actually thought the Fender noiseless pickups were the cheap ones. Guess that says a lot. I love these blind tests as it just goes to show how much branding can influence people.

      Roswells are SUPERB. Theres alot of misplaced LOYALTY in this game to LABELS. And so-called reputation. This belief, if it isnt made in AMERICA BY FENDER OR GIBSON. It cant be any good.
      That outdated purist attitude needs to CHANGE YESTERDAY. Harley Benton have changed the game. Theyre producing world class guitars for everyones pocket. Teaching the greedy overpriced manufacturing companies a LESSON. Thats been LONG OVERDUE. Only a label slave with more money than sense. Is gonna drop £1500 plus for a guitar. SIMPLY BECAUSE IT HAS FENDER OR GIBSON ON THE HEADSTOCK. No for those with any sense. Those days should be long gone.
      Put most of these idiots in a dark room and they wouldnt know the difference between a Squier classic vibe costing £350. Or a Fender USA standard costing £1600.
      Or even a Harley Benton ST DELUXE costing £200. And a Fender USA standard. Costing £1600 plus.
      Thats where we are today.

    I liked the Roswell the most. My grandson has the the HB Strat Style kit. The ceramic pickups sound amazing for what they are. They're not much different than what you would get with a Mexican Strat IMHO. However, he mentioned that they were a bit muddy for his tastes. So I recently bought an inexpensive ($20) set of alnico 5 pickups for him online. I can't wait to change them out for him.

    Well knock me down with a feather! My favorite was the Roswell, followed very closely by the cheap HB and in a distant third came Fender, very similar to what you said. I've been researching HB guitars just this morning and this video sealed the deal! I've been looking for a great strat knockoff because the real deal is outside of my budget and I'm not one to settle for anything less than quality. Thanks for all the hard work you put into running this test, especially with all the restringing that had to be done!

    Impressive blind test and I personally think the pickup technology nowadays is already quite mature that it is not somewhat secret
    That's why manufacturers like Roswell can make even better sound pickup and selling at a reasonable/cheap price
    Not a must to use expensive branded gear somehow
    Just personal opinion, happy rock!!

    In the 1950s, Leo Fender invented pizza. It was great and for a time he was the only one who knew how to make the real thing but 60 years later everyone does and it's always been a cheap recipe, which is what made it a legend.

    I have an American standard '88 Fender stratocaster and a Harley Benton st 20 standard. Their sound is similar, but cheap pick ups have much lower volume than expensive ones. Additionally If somebody has been playing guitar for almost 40 years is satisfied with higher guality pick ups.

    Been doing Tons of Research on "Proper Noiseless Pickups" (however) I preferred the Rosswell = more chime, sounded more Stratty! Next were the Fender's and the cheap ones did not even sound like a Strat. I'm curious about the New Fender Ultra Noiseless. They sound much better then the Gen 5's. I recently put Lollar Dirty Blonde's in my Suhr. Haven't found a proper noiseless - yet. Still searching. Nice Demo. Enjoyed your playing.

    To my ears, when flipping through the clean chords for each pickup the Fender sounded slightly better than the other 2 with a little more crispness and definition and a little more punch. The Harley Benton sounded darker and muddier than the other 2 and was my least favorite. The Roswell sounded very much like the Fender with a good midrange and punch, but had just a tad less clarity and sparkle as if the higher frequencies were turned down a tad. However, that added brightness of the Fender may have been a bit much when it was put into the mix. It seemed a little screechy at times, but then again, that's what your amp eq is for. I would say the Roswell wins overall for sound/value.

    Well my ears must be more finely tuned than i thought- i disliked 2 (the cheapy hb ceramic bar magnet) the other 2 were close! for my money i'd go with the rosswell! that being said- if you were to pop the magnet & pole pieces out of El Cheapo & put in Alnico pole pieces, the improvement is quite impressive!!! i have done it & its a cheap way to get a vintage sound!

    I have to say I'm also happy with the Roswell pups in my guitars. I think the double stack in the fender noiseles takes the edge off and kills the attack of a regular single coil. The thing about the ceramic magnet pups is they have a warmer, mellower tone, which makes the MIM strats sound good. Whichever pups you used, though, it still sounded like a strat!

    Overall, I actually liked the Fender PU the most although the Roswell was almost equal or close behind, for me at least. I found the Fender PU's tone to be a bit warmer. However, if looking at the 'bang for buck' factor, the Roswells take the cake big time.

    Wow. And thanks for this. I really preferred the Roswell pickup. I thought the Fender Noiseless sounded pretty mediocre in comparison to other two. I am surprised. • @TheEmperorPigeon
    @TheEmperorPigeon 5 років тому

    In all honesty, I mistaken the cheap HB kit pickup for the Fender pickup (and vice-versa) but I recognised the Roswell Alnico V as the third one straight away (I'm very much used to Alnico V pickups). The problem with the kit and Fender pickups is that the signal tends to break up the moment the high notes are hit and both are muddy at the bottom end, so given the price of the Fender I'm in agreement - definitely last place or, preferably, the bin. :)

  • @leonthompson8988
    @leonthompson8988 4 роки тому

    There was so much white noise or distortion from the G string down to the low E. You may have been over loading the input of the DAW. Those fender noiseless are generally muddy except for the new generation 4 which apparently are bright without much bass or mids. Have you tried the area stacked singles from Dimarzio? Their are some stacked singles on eBay for 60 bucks a set that are great for the price. Do you think that shielding the cavity actually changes the tone? I usually used Emg or hot rail pickups to make the guitar useable but their is something about the tone of the singles I want to use for recording. After 40 years I'm tempted to try a faraday cage

    • @BrentHutchinson

      I should have said I was using a gain setting which is my sound. It's a tweed valve amp model. Maybe I should just use a pure clean.. it's a very good point for these demos.. and I thank you. The shielding will definately clean up the tone but only as far as hum etc

    Hi Brent
    What model Roswell were they???

  • @PHeMoX
    @PHeMoX 3 роки тому

    Yeah, I definitely liked the Roswell's best too, it has the most character to its sound, plenty of grit but also the roundness of a typical telecaster. The Fender Noiseless came across as lacking personality. Too clean somehow. And honestly, I'm not even surprised the Fender Noiseless ones felt short in a comparison like this, _even_ compared to the cheap HB pickups (which is kind of _crazy_ when you think about it). A lot of money spend goes to nothing but the brand name. And nope, not hating Fender. Their mid-range guitars are amongst the best in the world (needless to say, I can't afford their high end guitars, which I'm sure are great too. But the value proposition might be off, I wouldn't know.). But Fender does have a lot of stuff that's quite overrated as well. Between the Squier Bullet, Squier Affinity and something like a Harley Benton TE-52 or TE-70, I would _probably_ go with the Harley Bentons for their sound and how playable they are for less money.

    The first pick-up has the most high end. The second has the least of it and sounds muffled. The third is close to the first but just a little less clear. This makes the first one objectively the best since it allows for a wider range in EQ.

      But, just because you gave me that answer:
      I have a recording studio, i sing, i play guitars, piano, bass and drums from when i was 11 years old. I compose, create and master a lot of different sounds.. I tried multiple stuff, a lots of amps and a lot more instruments. Faced many different players from jazz to heavy metal so i made my kind of idea....

    Ooooop[s......sorry I fell over at the results there. Well number 2 was soooo bad, easy to pick out the cheapo. Then I was confident 1 was the roswell and 3 was the fender.......how wrong was I. That roswell sounded great.

    I liked Roswell best, then Fender and the last one is noname - it sounds too muddy for me.

    1+3 was a draw for me none of them sounded superior to me. Just the nr. 2 sounded a bit thin to me.

    I actually liked the Roswells the best. The Fender noiseless sounded somewhat muffled to me especially with the gain up. The Roswells sounded the clearest and most defined to me in the test.

    Rosswell, the cheap ones sounded cheap just because the guitar wasn't tuned lol...you did it on purpose.

    Noiseless pickups don't sound as raw as a true single coil. Unbelievable I preferred the cheap harley benton pickups 😣

      For what it's worth, adding distortion to any clean tone will absolutely obscure the original tone sound by a lot. I disagree they sounded shit though, but suppose you were joking.
