Thankyou , I didnt realise how much more vertical my swing was getting and making it more difficult to rotate as much (now 76 years old) as I used to .This resulted foe me with too many pulled shots.I thought it was just old age ,but some of my golf mates had no problem.I can tell even swinging in doors how much easier it is and can't wait to try it out.
I think the biggest 'rotation blocker' is pulling/driving with the arms. Once u pull with the arms, (linear force) you end up totally closed off. From there, u have no choice but to goat hump, stand up and throw angles. Once you understand how the club tumbles out towards the ball, the swing feels almost horizontal and rotation just happens. Rotation is a result, not an effort.
I fight not to move towards the ball in the downswing. I've been told I need to fix it but it must have some useful purpose because if I want to hit serviceable golf shots, it's what I do. I like how you're going deeper into what is causing the lack of rotation. Have you been able to diagnose this using online lessons ie via video? If so, I'd like your help. Thanks.
I've always been guilty of the steep downswing. I just didn't realize it until now. Having said that is so hard to do this move of dropping the club behind me. I noticed it helped me rotate and my ball strike was more forward shaft lean but I'm pushing the ball. I made need a stronger right hand grip
Great explanation, thank you!! I may be wrong but I think there may be a 4th issue, which is trying to straighten the trailing, or dominant arm in the down swing, I've hand that problem for years. I've recently found keeping the trailing arm tucked in helps flatten the down swing and allows me to make a powerful turn into the ball with a neutral club face. Working well for now anyway!!
This vidéo is great. I love the fact that you don't just say don't do that but you explain the consequences. I think I ve got the vertical shaft issue ending with a huge slice when I hit it hard. I knew I was not trurning enough but did not put the finger on the reason !!! I thought it was because of some shoulders tilt, but the shoulder tilt it self might be because of the vertical shaft !!! I will definitely check. THANKS 👍👍👍
Another great video Jonothan! I can rotate so well in a practice swing and then lose depth in the actual swing (I have the practice swing of a tour pro haha! as many of my low hcp friends have said). This is a great reminder to get the 'feels' correct in the takeaway. Rotation, rotation, rotation = easier golf. Keep up the good work
Cheers Paul. Glad this video was helpful in understanding the why. Once the depth is in place you’ll have a much easier time rotating, just like your practice swings!
What direction should club face been pointing at the top of the back swing to be consider closer/strong compared to weak or open. Good visual to understand what top of backswing should look like
Do you have a video on getting into a position at the top of the swing that sets you up with good width and square clubface? The more I learn about the golfswing the more I see that getting things right earlier in the swing gives you the best chance of a solid shot......
Sorry, Im a visual learner, so are most golfers! Se you talk is ok, but do it yourself at same time what you want to learn us is what I would apreciate very much. Still talk is someting, Thanks. Johnny
Wow...great video. At the top of my backswing, my left arm is not higher or lower than the right shoulder suggesting it is not upright backswing. I know I swing more up and down and maybe not so much deep. Still at impact : my hips did not rotate even I try and slight bent arms and a little early extension. Yes, my downswing is slight steep as well. What does it tell you that I need flatter backswing? If so, what do I need to do to get flatter swing? Thank you so much if you could give your thoughts.
If your shaft is steep in the downswing, that will be the best place to start working on improving. A shallow shaft in the downswing will enable your body to rotate 👍🏼
Cracking video. Assuming I get some depth and my clubface is square (I actually try to get it slightly closed at the top), is it a good idea to try to get some external rotation of the trail shoulder on the way down or do things just happen naturally? I know that everything is relative to my normal action but I don’t think I steepen it on the way down but still my bad shot is a push fade
Thanks Martin! Absolutely, you can definitely feel some external trail shoulder movement to aid you with your shallowing move in transition. It’s a great move if you need the extra shallowing 👍🏼
At the top, where does the rotation start from and how do i then stop coming over the top as i open up my body, i am finding I’m coming over the top, but closing the face, and i think my shoulders end up flat as i rotate through,,,,,,,,so low hooks are common in my round? Any advice welcome!
I finally got a hold of all these things, but I still get myself in the situation of pulling the club with my leading arm just after impact. which leads to a half chicken wing. Any thoughts on how I can stop this from happening?
I think a good drill for people is to take a very strong grip, swing the club as flat as you can around your body, and then make the ball start right, or try to hit a cut(this will depend on ball position). You will have to rotate to keep from hitting it a mile low, left. Don't make this your normal swing. But, you have to go to extremes sometimes to get a certain "feel". Great video, bro!!!
No he just made up a straw man of what people do wrong and fixed it. The problem is nobody swings their club down like he is saying. we all try to rotate but can't figure out how to properly engage our core and maintain balance.
Hey man this was excellent! I had a real eureka moment with this "rotation" - you explained it so well. I ran out into the garden to try some swings at a training ball and I immediately understood how and where power comes from in the swing. I have always used my arms a lot in my swing and not much rotation. I could hit the ball a good distance, and fairly straight, but I was not consistent. I had a lesson with a pro many years ago and he said; "I used my hands well" - I wonder now if he was calling me a wanker" Hmmm I'm going to recommend your channel to all my golfing buddies.
Sure does! You only need the face to be open to your path for the ball to fade. More rotation encourages a slight out to in path, which DJ does brilliantly 🔥
It would be helpful to see you face on too! Additionally, worth mentioning the reason you want rotation is to get your body out of the way i.e. you don’t want to be at the point of impact with your body in the same position as it was at address etc etc
There is not a pro on tour that holds the right wrist angle through the hit as you are showing. They ALL fire the right hand through the hit. Why are you teaching this?
They certainly do not all fire the right hand through the ball. Back in the 90’s that would’ve been correct, but they had to fire the right hand to square up the toe up open club face that was taught. Look at players like Alex Noren, Tiger woods and Collin Morikawa. Very inward hand path release patterns. No need to stop the body from turning to square up the face with the right hand anymore
@@jchowngolf ua-cam.com/video/oGTKW_UbusM/v-deo.html. This is Tiger, 2018, you will notice the right hand firing over the left at and through impact.......
The front angle is not the angle to accurately see how the hands are working through impact. Here’s tiger 2019 ua-cam.com/video/4HzLO88ryCU/v-deo.html from down the line.
Why rotate - your body is not designed for it - your body is designed for up and down motions and your limited ability to rotate can support that - so name all the muscle groups designed to give your body rotational speed and power - and your spine hates rotation as a source of speed and power - so why rotate
Yes all very valid stuff but for the love of God can you not hit a few example shots ???? Every club Pro I have ever met stands there waving the club around in staccato bites and never hitting a ball. Hit a few real time examples why don't ya? There are a few online that actually do and it makes a big difference. MrShortgame Golf being one. (only trying to help make you more watchable).
This is a gold mine of a source. incredible he is doing all this talk with one take, no camera cuts.

Besser kann man es nicht erklären, hatte alle 3 Probleme in der beschriebenen Reihenfolge, jetzt wird es besser
Thx J can't wait to integrate your swing thoughts

So turn and keep turning. Great advise!
Only once the variables are in place 👍🏼
Great 3 tips. it helped me massively ! thanks Johnathan.

I'm not going to change my vertical shaft until I find out what the earth's core looks like
Haha it most likely looks like high golf scores 😂

Well...you just described my issues. The problem for me is which one or oneS do I deploy? I need to video my swing.
Outstanding instruction!

I should learn this before I have my next lesson.
You’re pretty good at these, maybe a touch more depth. Always good learn them though 🤙🏻
Fantastic, a great explanation, thank you best I've seen :)

Thanks Jay! Great suggestions! I’ve got a left arm video planned in the coming weeks 👍🏼
Great explanation! Welcome back to The Range!!!

can you suggest some drills we can work on at home
Great video
Great vid thanks... odd question... what trousers were you wearing in the video? thanks !

Some great points, thanks

Glad to hear you found the video helpful RK 🤙🏻
Great Advice

Do you have a video lead arm bent on back swing loosing distance and ball going left ps I am 77years old
I haven’t got a video on a bent lead arm yet I’m afraid, but I definitely will in the future 👍🏼
Great lesson brother thanks for your time and expertise!🙏🏻
My pleasure bud! Thanks for watching 🤙🏻
What about too wide of a stance at setup? Doesn't that make it hard to rotate?
do you do swing analysis and online coaching?
I do indeed on an app called Skillest 👍🏼
Can lack of rotation not cause hooks as well ?
At the top, where does the rotation start from and how do i then stop coming over the top as i open up my body, i am finding I’m coming over the top, but closing the face, and i think my shoulders end up flat as i rotate through,,,,,,,,so low hooks are common in my round? Any advice welcome!
The lower body rotation starts first, which prevents the upper body from swinging over the top 👍🏼
How do you keep face square if you are rotating
Great info. Would have loved to see all three moves to avoid while actually hitting the ball. But did only see that you only had one ball left. LOL
Thanks Vince! Had to make that one ball last 😅
I finally got a hold of all these things, but I still get myself in the situation of pulling the club with my leading arm just after impact. which leads to a half chicken wing. Any thoughts on how I can stop this from happening?
Whenever I try and rotate I end up shanking it. Any advice?
Could be a number of reasons. Make sure you have decent hand depth to start off with 👍🏼
Very interesting, I think I hold club face open,
Thanks! That would definitely cause you to stall out your rotation 👍🏼

DJ has a closed club face but still hits a fade.
Sure does! You only need the face to be open to your path for the ball to fade. More rotation encourages a slight out to in path, which DJ does brilliantly 🔥
Doesn’t look like you’re breaking the wrist while swinging?
Very helpful👍
Glad you liked it Stan 👍🏼

Absolutely. I’m planning on making a similar video in the next few weeks with better visuals and a more straight to the point approach 👍🏼

i agree with you on that, get the left hip out of the way is my key.

Lol 'shallowing' the club with ur hands is a waste of time.
Just get to ur left leg before or during the downswing
