I once had the vario pegged on +5m/s in a Slingsby Swallow, with max sideslip and max airbrake on, which together were good for at least -10m/s IIRC on that particular airframe. This was above an extremely large and rough bush fire, not too far from the rubbish dump at Warren Hills.
Just watched this again after quite a few years and it brought back to me how much I used to enjoy watching these as you put them out. Thanks Matt, blue skies and RIP mate.
Hi Matt Another brilliant video. One of my favourites was ''smoking the seafront'' but I think this one beats it!! Love the music too!!. We need more though!! Terry
Great video - the final shots brought back wonderful memories of my days in 92 at Dunstable. I see that my one man campaign to operate the airbrake with a reversed hand to avoid any confusion with the undercarriage lever never bore fruit!
3:27 - 6:01 was just crazy to watch! No thermaling almost at all and you just did an XC that on my Paraglider would have been 5-8 hrs on a good day - so fast and so easy... its like a Ferrari compared to a bicycle.
I started on a glider license years ago but had to choose between that and sports car racing. While I don't think I made a wrong choice, I sure think I would have loved soaring almost as much! Thanks for posting all your videos: I have thoroughly enjoyed them all! What a beautiful world we live in - especially when viewed from above!
Matt Wright, Thanks a lot for your excellent videos. You are doing an excellent job of exposing our little niche in aviation to everyone out there and I must say you have a great taste in music as well. Cheers and Carry On! Daniel Sazhin Aero Club Albatross (Blairstown, NJ USA)
Flew out of Sisteron a few years ago, visiting some of the same locations you filmed. Epic footage, scenery and flying. Thanks for taking the time to film and upload. This is great for the sport. Keep up the good work, have fun and fly safe.
Those clouds are cumulus clouds, not like stratus that can drop a lot quicker. He has a lot of bail out options since the mountains are very high, just turn away from the mountain and head toward an airport or a field. This is a perfectly safe endeavor if done with the appropriate training and experience. Cheers,
Awesome vid in fact all your vids are amazing, well edited, nice sound track and an inspiration to others. I would love to learn to fly a glyder. Any suggestions on where to start. Am based in London. Cheers.
Nice! I want to go back again to the Alps! I'm working on my video of March this year when we were on Vinon so I hope I can make the video as nice as yours.
Thanks. I used to use XC soar 5 years ago but I can see it's progressed hugely since then so I may try it out. I was actually thinking of buying an Oudie2 because I just can't read my crappy Compaq in the sun but I may have to check out the Dell Streak as it looks pretty bright. Btw, I also fly a 20 and love it completely. Until I can get a 27 ;)
ah right. watching some of it, the stick seemed so rigidly mounted I figured it must have been fixed in some way. Great video, love watching your posts, reminds me I must do something about my lapsed ppl. Gliding might just be the only affordable way to keep flying these days.
Thank you for sharing this video with us. In our club we have an ASW 20, too. You´re flying the L-version (16,6m), don´t you? In my oppinion the 15m-version with winglets is the best :) keep it moving!
good job finding all the wind shears and gusts. that was a long flight. how much do you have to prepare? and have you crossed the wind shear layer to 'snake' in the mountains?
Sometimes people ask me why I love flying. I should show them this movie.

Oh my god! Oh my god! Yes man!!!! This is the paradise!! O my god! I love it!!!
Brilliant Matt!!

:P I had to go land since some other guy wanted to fly the club glider, I was so annoyed. The thermal was over 1km wide.
That looks absolutely bliss. A perfect place for gliding :) Great vid

Genial !!!
I used to waterski in a Piper Tomahawk over the Iowa River - to the consternation of boaters - it's time for aerobatic gliding, I'm thinking.
Bellissimo.......!
Really nice! Make me miss my old rocket. (Glider) :)
It is very nice ..Thank you
bellissimo video!!!
