On 20th Anniversary of The Prague Spring Suzanne Vega performs Tom's Diner in the Czech Republic in the presence of Vaclav Havel and other dignitaries.
Love the violins and Suzan's voice. "Oh this rain it'll continue through the morning as I'm listening to the bells of the cathedral, I am thinking of your voice ..."
I used to love this song when I was little and my mom heard the beginning of Centuries by Fall Out Boy and it reminded her of this song and we spent like twenty minutes looking for it, and when we did we were surprised by how many parts of it we remembered (the paper, the coffee, the rain, the umbrella, the person outside, the picnic, the train, and a few others)
Such a great song that has stuck with me my entire life and now I disco ver that the singer is absolutely beautiful!! I mean.... wow!!!!! Pure, natural beauty!!!! Awesome!
My friend used to listen to this version in high school. It’s the beat version all the instruments just mend so well together. And that bass player knows how to get down!
Thank U very much for explaining the meaning of this timeless song to the clueless... she was invisible to those around her... She went unnoticed by everyone, even though the woman was staring right at her through the window "she doesn't notice her"... This was released back in April 22, 2003...No smart phones yet not many people texting like there's nothing else around...Now we as a society have become even more detached from each other-unaware of the people around us...It's so sad!
When realize this song is about trying to get over a heart beak by just getting through a regular day while still remembering the love of your life. Depressing and memorizing at the same time
This song is about how a photographer views life, and how he feels like he's not interacting with people. But forever living behind a lens. The dinner it's self is somewhere she would go to eat a lot, and whilst she was sitting there she remember about how this photographer in question and started describing the dinner how she imagined he saw it.
Lovely lovely version. And the woman, too. I used to go to her concerts in Italy with my girlfriend. She's so naturally beautiful...inner beauty, manifests her peculiarity self. I lOvE her.
William Holden was the actor who died while drinking that she had not heard of... Watch the movie "Network". William Holden is the lead. One of the best on screen rants ever! "I'm mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore!" Also Suzanne Vega is the so called "mother of the MP3" This song was used as the test by Karl-Heinz Brandenburg to see if he could properly compress music due to the pure tones and delicate vocals. Thus we now have MP3. All MP3 compressions are a result of the initial work done on this song. Another thing “Tom’s Diner”-called Tom’s Restaurant on 112th and Broadway-is the same one featured in Seinfeld. Useless trivia for the masses. Enjoy!
To the person who commented that the song appeared to be pointless Suzanne is talking about the non-personal way we interact every day without seeing each other. We are never cordial enough to strangers - and she thinks we are all equally guilty.
@BedsitBob Correcting myself. It was 1986. It's on UA-cam as "Suzanne Vega, Tom's diner (vocal)" Listen how quiet the audience are, as they listen to it, and the response when the song finishes.
I love the way she embraced the "rap" version of this song, rather than rejected it. :)
she gets more and more beautiful as she gets older, lovely

Simply stunning, utterly magnificent to keep the tone during the bridges.

Today , 22 April 2019, I visited Toms Diner in New York.
Isso ficou muito bom!!! Linda!
Love the louder strings line in this live version.
Almost a capella
The Prague Spring was in 1968, this was performed on the 20th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution - in 2009.
If you've ever felt lonely and sat around watching people this song makes perfect sense
Love this song likey tenth time

💖💖💖💖💖
This is a Tune ..
It is fantastic that she has managed to get famous with an internal monologue. Very interesting!
It´s on 20th Anniversary of The Velvet Revolution. The Prague Spring took place in 1968 just before Soviet invasion.
Demais✌
I love here she's stunning right Brammah
The "Velvet Revolution" was a counter-revolution.
これこそ歌姫!

Genius..
Good
It's cool but I would still appreciate a back beat!
When I am sitting on the toilet, it's time to take a dooty, when the dooty hits the water, the water hits my booty, doo do doo do
If you read about the song, she explains it as an exercise in objective perception.
I was in the Diner!!
I love you
subeer
What a curious (yet interesting) arrangement.
This was not the 20th anniversary of the Prague Spring (which was in 1968) but of the Velvet Revolution of 1989. Thus, the video dates from 2009.
