    Jeff,
    This is absolutely and unequivocally THE BEST introductory video that I have seen on how to start with a simple solar system. The idea of building one came to me the other day when I was cooking out in my yard early in the evening and I could not see what I was doing while I was fixing a couple of pieces of steak… So I have decided to look into the construction of a small solar-powered lighting system for my cooking island. Thanks a lot for the video and I will check out your store on eBay.
    3-Cheers!

      Anyone who uses the improper " panel " for the proper " module " should be questioned about everything else he utters. Cells create modules, which create panels , which create arrays. Proper nomenclature is imperative when teaching.

    You are the DUDE!!! Thank you SO MUCH! I've read short "simple" books, articles, watched other videos....with yours, I finally COMPREHEND it...others make it sound so complicated. Now you need to buy an RV so you can explain to us how all the systems work! (I don't have one yet, but I've already bought a 128 watt solar panel for it!) Thanks again.

    They way to start if it were me is to buy a small solar panel, like a 12 volt 100 watt , a 10 amp 12 volt solar charge controller, a 12 volt 300 watt modified sign wave dc to ac inverter and a old 12 volt car battery.
    No you have something that can create some real power and run a tv set, lights etc.
    Once you have run that system for awhile you will fully understand how solar works and what it will and won't do.Blow that little system up 10 tens it's size and you could run a off grid house with it. Don't waste your time buying a little 30 watt panel that you wouldn't use for anything latter on.
    Quit thinking about it and buy something, that's how i got started. All the schooling in the world is useless in my opinion until you actually have hands on with your own system.Always remember to hook up your solar charge controller to a battery FIRST before a solar panel is connected or you'll burn out the controller. Or cover your solar panel with a blanket so it's not putting out any power .

      Hi...is there any federal statute that protect against state regulation of Off-grid systems?...here you can't build a DIY off grid system ....you have to hire an engineer to install it!! Crazy!!

      I agree with your recommendation to start out with a larger panel that can be used for something useful. I started out with a 2-watt panel and it was good to experiment with for about a day but I have not used it since then. By contrast, my 100-watt panel is being used to supply lights for a shed and power to a mini refrigerator.

      Is there a solar kit or ready made unit where it has all the wiring and has been worked out so it is safe and has panels to fit in anybodies window with everything supplied to plug in house hold appliances ?
      I have searched the market and have not found any.So if you find the same then surly that's a business opportunity.A lot if not most people would want something like that to get interested in it.

    I have a 12 volt 150 watt solar panel connected to a 50 amp charge controller and a 55 amp trolling motor. I am new to this source of power and my question is should I leave the system hooked up at night and does the controller prevent the battery from discharging when there is no daylight? I go fishing on the weekends and I would like to hook it up during the week and forget about it until I need it if possible. Also do I need the load hooked up all of the time? Thank you for the wonderful lessons!

    • @MissouriWindandSolar
      @MissouriWindandSolar  9 років тому +1

      ChaplainJuker Yes you leave it hooked up all the time. The charge controller will disconnect the incoming power when your battery is full. The solar panel will not draw power at night if diodes are installed in it.
      You need to always keep the charge controller hooked up to the battery. Disconnecting the charge controller from the battery with solar power coming into it will burn out the controller.I hope this answered your question.

      Thank you again for your helpful comments! Sometimes the simple things can be the most confusing but with your help I now have a good basic knowledge of solar power and finally I see how these components work together. My next challenge will be to convert my Rv's gasoline generator to wind and solar power and no doubt your products will suit the bill. Thanks!

    • @Jimwill01
      @Jimwill01 9 років тому

      ChaplainJuker
      Since you are planning on using this to charge the battery for your trolling motor, may I suggest that you put a switch in the solar panel positive (red) lead? Before unhooking the battery to go fishing, flip the switch so the solar panel is disconnected from the charge controller, then unhook the battery. When you finish fishing and want to put the battery back on charging just hook up the battery then flip the solar panel switch to reconnect the solar to the charge controller. That way you don't burn out the charge controller.

    Thank you for breaking this down to where anyone can understand it. You're the first I've heard speak in natural or laymen's language how Solar electricity works. Everyone else seems to think they're speaking to an audience of Electricians. Though I can't afford the whole setup, I will buy one piece at a time until I can power my home off-grid. Again, thanks for your simplicity in explanation. I finally get it.

    Thank you Jeff...I keep watching your videos...and figuring out and understanding. From this video I learned: (Solar Panel: absorbs the DC energy) hooked to (Charge controller: protects the battery from over charging) hooked to (Battery: the DC energy storage unit) hooked to (the inverter: converts DC to AC), also the analog meters help to monitor efficiency of V and Amps and for location of the solar panel. Hahaha...I got it!

  • @brucewalters8974

    Jeff... Thanks so much for taking the time to educate some of us. One of the areas I've been struggling to understand is how to make sense of how when wiring panels (modules) together in series, and how the new power coming out of them is related to the input capacities of the charge controllers. Here's the example I've been toying with.... Lets say that I have (8) 12V 325 watt panels. They're output amperage is 8.6. I wire 4 of them in series to make a total of a 48V array. This is done with all 8 panels making two strings of 48V, and output wattage of 1300 Watts per string with the amperage staying at 8.6. What would be the wiring scheme to the charge controller, and what kind of Voltage and Amperage capacity would the charge controller have to handle..??On the other side of the charge controller would of course be the batteries, and how would 6V 225 Ah batteries have to be wired to handle the output from the charge controller..??I guess the long & short of my questions would be, is that if you have the time and inclination to do so, one of your instructional videos explaining how it all works together would be really beneficial.I'd love a reply to let me know what you think..

    Jeff, I love the turbines and solar panels. I install them for my customers. You have to start standing behind the products you sell. Today, I called for a simple bad ammeter on my controler (C440-HVA), and was told to call Coleman who build it. Colman charged me for the replacement part because I didn't buy it from them. They offer the same controler for 30 bucks less, and they will stand behind what they sell.

      "Quit thinking about it and buy something, that's how I got started. All the schooling in the in the world is useless in my opinion until you actually have hands in your own system." That sir is a VERY good quote... "In my opinion" I will and thank you for the motivation.

    Thanks for sharing this knowledge. Always been scared of 120/240 volt sources(stuck bare wires into industrial 240 volts as a kid), and these videos are making it a lot easier to wire up my own solar system to save on the electric bill out here in California.(900 dollar electric bills per month this last summer)

    I just go an older Winnebago w/ Solar and am debating on whether to put money into a gas generator or go your Solar route. Your route seems more cost efficient and less problems and things to tinker with with while on the go. Do you recommend a specific kind of battery.... I've also been reading about power walls with recycled 18650 capactors. Thanks for your videos by the way. Very informative, concise and clear.

    Holy Moly, what a service you’re providing, really, thank you for this video I happened upon. And this is 5 years old? Man you were ahead of your time. I recently purchased a property in southern Missouri and unfortunately the house is out there and no gas lines only electric running to the house so you can imagine the bills this winter even with a constant fire. Thank goodness we’re not there a lot. I am wondering if I can get enough panels chained together to eliminate White River. Please let me know if you still provide the necessary equipment to get me started and eventually get off the grid. Thanks in advance for your reply and for the informative video.
