This Designer's Own Melbourne Terrace Home Uses Every Square Millimetre

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 12 лют 2021
  • At only 5m wide, this Melbourne terrace home of designer Dan Gayfer needed to make use of every square millimetre to ensure enough space, flexibility and functionality for his family. He did this by really analysing the needs of his family, such as, did they really need a dedicated laundry room, or would they prefer more living space?
    A feature of this home are the tiles used throughout, in conventional areas such as the bathrooms and kitchen splashback, but also in places you wouldn't expect them, like the rear exterior facade. There was functional reasoning behind this, for their durability and low maintenance, but also, Dan's father is a tiler and did the tiling for his own home, which is a special bond to have.

    I'm Portuguese born, and we use tiles on the exterior of our buildings. For some weird reason painted facades look grimmy very quickly in the Portuguese climate, but the tiles look beautiful for decades, they are low maintenance.👏👏👏👏 I really liked your solution to the laundry room problem.😍 I would need a bigger refrigerator in my kitchen 😉. I do love the huge Windows leading to the courtyard 👏👏👏😍

    can you share the distance between your main kitchen and the island? I am considering the same kitchen layout for my house but we only get 4meter. Just to ensure the best conform distance

    • @SimpleDwelling
      @SimpleDwelling  3 роки тому

      I will follow-up with Dan on that specific dimension for you. If I'm to take a pretty educated guess however, it'll probably be 1m between the benches. So with both benches being 600mm deep, you'll be left with 1,800mm to fit in your hallway, and construction (wall depth). If you're considering a staircase, that kitchen layout won't work, as you'll be about 200-300mm too narrow.

    •  3 роки тому

      @@SimpleDwelling Thank you very much for the reply. Indeed it is too narrow and it would be very annoying to have 2 people in the same kitchen like my situation. I am thinking of kitchen peninsula instead. My Architect is not very experience so I am finding the best advice from other source for my home

      A lot of the time the back end of these Victorian homes are poorly designed and built extensions in the 50s/60s/70s that don't offer any value. So it makes sense to clear all of those lean-to extensions over the years, keep the historical part, and build a new contemporary part.
