Matt Fradd please continue your Catholic Bible studies- it has giving me so much life. We need to get know our own good book better!!! Also love the beard - beard and bible is good combination, unless when you accidentally close your bible on your beard. But if you grow it extra long, you will get a extra respect from our Orthodox brothers and sisters! :D
@@jamessgian7691 yes I am and you might think Christians teach the same but I disagree. Protestants don't value chastity for life and consider remarriages lawful....when it's really marital adultery.
People say they aren’t catholic but still learn from our teachings like why not introduce that structure and devotion into your life that’s the difference, unless your planning on leaving us anytime soon 😅
Hey Matt great format, I would love so much to have a in-depth analysis of Rosary Mysteries, so that we can all meditate them fully when in prayer! What do you think? I can also translate your subtitles in italian for italian viewers who are not so skilled with english
Yes I agree, thank you for bringing it up! I have no challenge with the Sorrowful Mystery … being able to visualize all of what Jesus went thru, but the Joyful and Glorious not so much.
I am finding these brief but pithy commentaries very interesting, and entertaining besides! It is inspiring me to delve deeper into Scripture. Thank you. I would love to contribute to your Patreon account, but I am already contributing to 3 other podcasters, Relevant radio, and my parish. If I have to quit working, I am 79, then I will have to stop all of them except a pittance to the Church. If I start getting paid for another job I will be doing, then I will definitely contribute - so pray for me that that happens soon.
Matt said it, Jesus wants your freedom!! How amazing is that? I constantly have to remind myself of that and this bible study was an absolutely awesome reminder. People are always so quick to view chastity as a cruelly restrictive practice, when it's the absolute opposite. I loved this bible study bro. The format is great, the length is great; the width, the height, the beard; all of it! If anyones reading this, please please please check out the "He must increase, I must decrease" Bible Study with Aquinas, absolutely amazing stuff. It had a significant impact on my prayer life in the past few days regarding humility, so I also want to say thank you to Matt for being an instrument of Christ's love in that regard.
My first bible study with aquinas...Wow! This was good. A clear, shameless message 👍. A surprisingly fresh "wind of thoughts" into today's culture. I'm gonna bring back the ugly words and strive to become a truly free man. Thank you, God with us.
Hi, Matt, -- I missed the livestream, ... just started listening now, but I have a thought I'd like to you offer... (Not having heard your study, I can't know if TA has addressed it, but I suspect not... When I was teaching sacramental prep, and had to do an examination of conscience with these 2nd graders, I thought... how can I make this relevant to kids, without scandalizing or getting derailed. So it occurred to me to propose to them things like: Do i make others feel bad about themselves, especially about their bodies? Do I go through my big brother's belongings, or read my sister's diary, without her permission?.... It occurred to me that the 6th commandment is about boundary issues in general. Put that in an adult perspective, and ... If we respect people enough to respect their space, chastity follows pretty much automatically. We often nuance the other commandments, but somehow keep this about sexual sin -- which it is, but I think it can be much more subtle. What say thou?
Whatever behaviour of people has led you to believe that a person can escape sin? You phrase your query as though you wish to teach kids that they can live a life free of sin, but the reality is they will all sin. What people need to learn is to confess their sins, realize they are not perfect (and never will be) and how to follow Jesus
@@Davidjune1970I'm not implying that sin can be escaped. That's why we go to confession frequently. But we ARE called to vigilance, and to try to avoid sin. What I'm saying is that, just like we teach our kids not to fight, as a nuance to the 5th commandment ... because they're not likely to kill at that age, but they do hurt others at the level of their capacity, the sixth commandment, at a kid's level?... well, we can HOPE they're not into sex, but these days, society is pushing it on them. But how do we begin to teach them to be sensitive to others, so that it carries forward in life to bigger issues? ... and are we, as adults, so sensitive? - boundary issues. They can be very subtle.
Thank you! That was very informative. I wish priests would give sermons on this topic because no one seems to understand that fornication is a sin. Many Catholic couples are living together and have no clue they are doing anything wrong. How can they know if no one tells them?
@MattFradd, would you kindly interview Ron Belgau from the Spiritual Friendship on a Pints with Aquinas Podcast? He is a really cool guy and a prolific writer.
Very impressive thoughts. If you could qoute Acquinas a little bit slowlier, please, Matt. I can´t follow it at times :-). Thanks for this choise, however. Wishing you all the best.
Thank you for this video, I got something not directly related out of this. I always wondered if we could identify a mortal sin by looking at the punishment in the OT. So if a sin was mortal, in the OT, I hypothesized that the punishment would be death, pointing forward to eternal death for those who die in mortal sin. But here Aquinas explicitly gives an example of a mortal sin that was not punishable by death in the OT. That resolves it for me.
how about those married couples and left their children to their grandparents because both parents are working, and working abroad? This situation is somewhat common here in the Philippines.
When we mix the old covenant (OT) w/the new covenant (NT) it's like being married to Jesus (the bride of Christ) & committing adultery, or having an affair w/Moses. It reminds me of a verse I read somewhere (I forget where) that said something along the lines of; Thou shall not commit adultery. Amen 😉👍
Another strategy I found to work is to pray to God. First if you are in the act and become aware of it, God, or just its sinfulness, pray. Pray for help, for mercy, for strength to pull away, for courage to continue fighting against the temptations, for wisdom to see what leads you to this. During ordinary prayers, if hit with temptation, after the fact, or even during if you find yourself there, pray for God to let you see the true nature of what it is, to let it be a horrific experience for you, to let you know, He sees and He knows at that time. Pray for fear of God's Judgement if you continue in these acts, for fear of knowing you have offended and hurt our Blessed Lord. Consider the Cruxificion of our Blessed Lord and remember two things, your sins (and mine) are why Christ was put torture and, that Christ did that because He loves you more than you can possibly imagine, concieve or fathom and He want you to be saved. You just have to say yes to Him and trust Him and let Him lead you back to the road home. Let it hurt, it should hurt when you hurt your loved ones, most of all He Who is Love. Remember, He loves you, that is wht He did that, that is why He is calling you, and that is why He wants better than this for you. Contemplate the Stations of the Cross, the Seven Sorrows of Our Blessed Mother, and the Sorrowful Mysteries and Joyful Mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary. Sorrowful for contrition and building resolve not to sin again, and to make reparations, and the Joyful Mysteries to contemplate our Blessed Lord's conception, gestation, birth, and childhood. This is also a good way to go further and make reparations for those committing abortion and all those involved in this murderous, bloody enterprise of snuffing out the lives of the innocent and the helpless. Turn your struggle into a battle for something noble, don't just stand up, FIGHT! God bless you and grant you all you need in your struggle against the forces of darkness. Through our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ, Who is the Just Divine Judge of each and every one of our souls, and Who is our Divine and Human Savior, Who died for each and every one of us out of unimaginable, incomprehensible, unfathomable love and mercy for us. Amen Jesus, I trust You.
I love the bible studies but I wish they were longer and more in depth. Maybe continue to make them the way you are but at the end just continue talking and going in more depth for those who want it
St Aquinas was 1200 years after Christ and Moses was 1200 years before Christ. Shouldnt be a surprise in having an update in faith to happen like the commandments. Not the penaconstals along them lines
I made the connection between sexualized imagery and the enslavement of the passions in the Fantasy genre due to recent changes that men have found offensive in the game World of Warcraft because it changes a portrait of a naked woman to a bowl of fruit or putting more layers on a woman's portrait to give her more dignity. The other example is Star Wars: Return of the Jedi where Princess Leia was enslaved to Jabba the Hutt and forced to wear a revealing bikini; by the end of that arc, she chokes the blob with his own chain, and it's almost like Judith doing God's vengeance on Holofernes by putting her in a situation where she is going to be ogled by a large number of men because she is dressed so beautifully to captivate a man's heart. Lady Gaga had some songs 10+ years ago now that really highlight the difference between the sexes. A woman is looked upon as the vessel capable of bearing a child, and a man is the water that seeks to fill that vessel. I've seen it also said that a man can also take on the aspects of a woman because he has an X chromosome in addition to his Y chromosome; he must be willing to bear the weight of a child on his back as he goes about his daily routine. I knew quite a few women growing up who had multiple men paying them child support through the state or having gone to court to get a deadbeat father to pay for his offspring. The thought of that reality filled me with such dread of what men would think of me if I got close to them. The only relationships around me that I didn't think toxic were my parents and grandparents. My parents have been married 38 years (at 22 for my mom and 24 for my dad--he would have been 25 that November because they were married in September), and my grandparents have been married for 67 years (grandparents got married when they were 18 and 19).
Matt I have a question, I realize this question is a bit aggressive, but bare in mind I ask because you are a better Christian than me, I know you will be quick to dismiss that, but I am a young boy and a dumbass so please do not. How can you say that someone caught up in Adultery or fornication ought to repent(change) and never turn back when you minister to numerous hopeless teens and adults who are hooked on Porn, who have tried over and over again to repent, when their attempts are less than futile? Both are very similar sins, although it is admittedly easier to access porn, so if you can tell someone to quit fornication and adultery now, why don't you make as strong of a statement towards those hooked on porn like myself. It feels like you preach mercy to the young and wrath to the old of course both are truly with The Good Lord and not incompatible, but why the difference.
@Ed Hi Ed, thank you so much for your help! I think this isn't the first time you've answered my question in the comments so thank you! If you would be so kind to help me with this, I have two more questions related to the video. St. Thomas says that his answer in the commentary above doesn't explain why polygamous marriages are sinful from natural law. His explanation also doesn't seem to explain why marriages are to be lifelong using natural law. Does St. Thomas have arguments from Natural law for both? I was really curious because this is the first time I'm actually reading a natural law argument and it's really powerful!
@Ed Hi Ed, thank you so much for your response! So this would mean that if couples have met their first end, and by this I mean either they aren't able to have children, say due to infertility, or their children are all grown up and settled either living consecrated lives or married, their second and third end is lifelong. Therefore, marriage has to be lifelong. Would this be correct?
I have a question, i may not have comprehended the statement cleary, but do help me understand. In the case where @MattFradd quotes Aquinas in saying that a woman can request that her husband have intercourse with her, if she is bleeding from 'an unnatural cause'.. What if that 'unnatural cause' was due to artificial contraception? What does Aquinas say about such causes? Would contraception be permitted within a marriage, then? Don't think so.. :/

So good. I'm not catholic but really appreciate the catholic teachings on celibacy, sex, adultery etc.
i know that you didnt ask but I too find catholic arguments on contraception and sex to be quite compelling
