Having multiple chronic illnesses makes it nearly impossible to follow any art challenge and sometimes it can bring bad feelings for those of us who aren’t as able, when a challenge is at hand. Hearing from people like you who are so gung-ho on challenges, to be very real with yourself about what you can and can’t do, gives a lot of comfort to so many by just being honest about what we can and can’t do. This goes for anyone, not just us w diagnosed illnesses. Thank you for your honesty and your great videos and big brain 💖
I'm glad it was a comfort! I think we all put too much pressure on ourselves at times, it's hard when you get FOMO or feel like not participating in these big things will make everyone forget about you, which is so silly really! Even though I am proud I am being a bit more of a responsible adult - I would rather be irresponsible and play with art supplies and pretend everything is alright 🤣 Maybe next month!
I can relate to you SOOOOOO MUCH April. I too started Inktober and had to bail. I realized too that I was adding things to my list and these things were keeping from statying on track with my Shopify store. I think we just oooooze creativity...lol, at least thtat's what I hear. We want to do it ALL and YESTERDAY, you know. At least you recognized that you were avoiding something - your main goal and that's to get your bigger projects completed. It's just frustrating that we have to go through that stage, right? We committ to something and then we realize AFTER we 've been hit by the car , that maybe we shouldn't have been crossing THAT BUSY ROAD...you know...lol. That's the way I think of it anyway. I'm really trying though. I'm glad you learned something and you were nice to yourself too. Just do your thing!! 🙂BRAVO to you!!
Oh my gosh! You sound like me! Good for you getting your priorities straight. I just seem to wallow in the crazy for way too long. I love your style and the color and the vibe your art gives. Love it!
I have given up with October for challenges, but I like turning my own projects into 'challenges' to make it more interesting for me. This seems to help change my mindset about how exciting it is. I, too, am guilty of changing too many factors when it comes to trying new things, especially when I am recording it for UA-cam, I'm like oh I'll try this new sketchbook and I'll use this medium I haven't used for years and this paintbrush I just bought and this colour palette I just made up 😂 I like it when artists share their struggles about October because a lot of artists seem to have it together for this extra creative month, and I'm just sitting there like a potato.
That’s a great idea Amanda! I have done the same for the book I was illustrating, but it was such a big project and I feel so tired and burnout at the moment. I really want to keep next October free so I can participate/)
Oh my gosh, that title page of yours said “responsible human BEAN.” I have never heard anyone but my husband and me say that before. Then again, maybe everyone says it and I’m just unaware. Anyway….this made me smile so big. When you were talking about the excitement of new ideas and new projects…I can identify with that so much. I’ve got an old planner from years back that I never used. It has become the place I put all my brainstorming. Then, when I’m looking for something to do/a personal art project, I revisit those ideas. That way, I still have record of them so that I can work them into my schedule at any time. Sometimes, the initial excitement has worn off by the time I get around to actually doing them. But so far, what I’m finding is that the ideas I was most excited about initially - I’m still just as excited about them, even if it’s months down the road when I finally get to them. Everyone is different, as far as what works for us as individuals. I just thought I would share my own method for dealing with the exact thing you’re talking about. Until someone comes up with time travel, that is. 😊
I have heard it a few times, mainly on the internet. I like beans too :) so it fits. I like the idea of an idea book. I have a list in my notes app but sometimes I’m not even sure what the note means as it’s just a bunch of random words that I don’t remember what they mean 😂
Hi April, I love your videos, you always put a big smile on my face😊 love yr art style so it's great to see you drawing. I can't do challenges it is too limiting for me and I get sooo bored, I run to do something else 😀.Thank you for sharing and I hope that you book will become true very soon.
Go April - you tell that procrastination where to go! I didn't even realise it was October for a few days so I missed the start of all the challenges. Guess that's a sign that I shouldn't attempt any this year. I'd like to do Calmtober in the future though.
I don’t like challenges. They always feel so restrictive and tedious to me. Art is my time for creative fun (I’m a hobbyist) and I protect that freedom carefully. I do get it’s inspiring fun for some! Love your art work.
I get that! They can be creative sinkholes especially if you feel under pressure. I like the community side of challenges though, and how it brings people together and finding new artists to follow :)
Thankyou :) I have a few, but my fav is the standard 6B. It feels the most comfy. I’m planning on making a more in depth video on my process with traditional-digital, so I will explain more in that one and speak about brushes :)
Hi April, your channel popped onto my feed and I love your video! Look forward to watching others. I am a terrible procrastinator and struggle just to put stuff in the sketchbook. I have many ideas in ma head, but 'no time' to put them down on paper. I love Procreate but am lambasted with the myriads of options... 😵💫. Anyhoo, I've just started (finally) posting videos seriously on YT, and it's giving me incentive to paint - how long will it last 😅. Thanks for sharing and love your illustration.
Can you tell me why you save your carandache crayon shavings? That's very intriguing. Always love the depth of color in your work. Thank you sharing your process on UA-cam. I know it takes tremendous time to film and edit. So appreciate you!
I never used to sharpen them but I find I like having them sharp for details but hate to throw away the shavings. You can dissolve them to make a paint and I’ve also seen people soften them and smoodge them back together to make another crayon
Hello April, beautiful work!! I absolutely love watching your videos. Could you tell me how to learn to tweak sketchbook illustrations in Procreate? I understand practicing is the main part, but maybe you can advise on tutorials or courses. Thanks in advance!!
Hi 👋 it’s more of an over-draw than a tweak. Just shifting things around and erasing bits. And then drawing over. I can add this as a video idea to my list, and try to make one next month? I was meaning to explain more here but then I ended up just chatting
@@monkeymintaka It looks so difficult!!! I see you selecting an eye and move its position!! Now I don't have experience with Procreate (I do have with Procrastination, haha), but it would be so interesting to learn. If you have the time it would be nice to see a video in which you explain this. Have a good day, April.
I scan them in, and then stitch together in photoshop, then save to my iCloud and then open up on my iPad. I will make a more in depth video of the iPad process
You’re a very busy and very very creative human BEAN 🫘 😂 thank you for continuing to put out these UA-cam videos that a lot of us look forward to even though you’re swamped at work and have Goodnight patchy bunny to finish! I love your idea of the bear as character going through different situations for each prompt! ❤
@@monkeymintaka absolutely! 💯 it’s about developing the idea and not running behind the timeline. Also, better to do calmtober while you’re actually feeling calm 😁

Having a “big brain” and an abundance of creativity is a problem we should all have. I enjoyed watching your process.
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Your story book is going to be amazing! Love the artwork!
Thanks Sasha!

It’s a tough lesson to learn but we’re getting there :) I love you analogy, I will try to stay away from speeding cars 😅
Love your video process of Patchy Bunny artwork, it’s looking beautiful!
Thanks Mandy :) It’s getting there!
Oh my gosh! You sound like me! Good for you getting your priorities straight. I just seem to wallow in the crazy for way too long.

Enjoyed your video. Appreciate your candor and your artwork is so lovely.

If only we could freeze time!! That has always been my wish 😂 Great video April - loved seeing your process. 💗xxx
Me too, it's always my go to super power of choice when asked. I don't get asked that question much actually, now that I am an adult.
@@monkeymintaka me either, but weirdly, I think about it ALL the time! 😂
Whether it's in a sketchbook or Procreate, I could watch you draw for a very long time.
Ahh thanks :)

Calmtober does look very doable and I like the cute prompts. I think I’ll do it over Christmas maybe 🤔
I love your work so much!
Ahh thankyou :)
I'm here for the big braining human bean. The procrastination problem is real for the creative brain.
So real! I’m glad I’m not suffering alone

Are the crayons ur using over the acryllic and gouache Neocolor 2’s.
Yes, I didn’t use much though . Mainly pencils for these.
