    I remember watching this vid while in high school, thinking how in the world am I gonna get money to make my own or even buy one from a manufacturer. Viola.. 2 years later I am now close to making my own metal furniture with the right equipment. This is possibly my next project. And I can say thanks for making me see that I can do my own stuff instead of buying one.

    • @robertpluso
      @robertpluso  7 років тому +2

      Boy, this makes me feel old, hahaha, but this is one of the reasons why I posted this video, to show that it can be done. Good for you, there is a sense of accomplishment on making your own projects in stead of buying them. Also, you can probably buy something cheaper some times, but the one you make is probably will be far more superior to that one cheap one, and if you are going to make something that other wise would be expensive to get, it will most certainly be cheaper to make it. There are no impossible things to accomplish than the one you don't even try. It may take some time but in the end, it can be done.

    Ideas for your next video:
    Your DIY bench press.
    Awesome work! Have been designing my own but love seeing how others did it. So far you are the only one I've seen use all metal and no wood. Looks professionally done. Keep it up!

    Awesome to see your rack, man. It's hard to find people that have made them commercial-grade with steel. I did this exact project back in 2008. I can empathize with you about drilling all those holes!

    Hi Robert.
    Great video there, glad to see a well build homemade power rack.
    There is a great and cheap solution for the pipes that hold weights in the weight tree.
    As you said yourself it's pointless painting them as the weights will scratch them.
    What you can do is get some hard heat shrink tubing (usually used for insulation). slide it on, heat it up with some form of open flame, and voila. I did that on my power rack 2 years ago and it's still works perfectly. you can even get it in colors i think.
    the only prerequisite is that you have enough free space between the diameter of your tubes and the holes in the weights.
    Got that advice from my friend, worked great so i thought i shared it here, maybe someone else can use it.

    • @robertpluso
      @robertpluso  10 років тому +1

      Wow, thank you for the tip. I did not know they made shrink tubing that big, will have to look in to it. Thankfully, I live in Arizona, and we do not have rust problems here, it's very dry, but temperatures reach any where between 110 to 120 degrees on the worst summers.

    This is a great project, only i personally wouldn't have sprayed any paint where id be constantly lifting, like on the pull up bar because i know that would be coming off after use. Great job though you gave me a good idea of what i need to do for my self.

      Well thanks for the video, the rack is pretty much perfect in what i'd want. The only problem i would have is welding, i know how to weld, I've had classes but it needs work. One question, where did you get your steel from?

    • @robertpluso
      @robertpluso  10 років тому

      kahlil garcia I got it from a local metal shop. It's a local shop owned and they are very relax about it, some times when I can find smaller peaces from an already cut peace they, most of the time just let me have it. Or if I buy full peaces and I get a good amount they give me a price break. So I spend a lot of time scavenging through the metal trying to find metal peaces that I can use, and avoid cutting or buying a full peace. You see they deal with big companies in the area, that buy crazy amounts of metal. I think it's call David's Welding Supplies.

I went of that, making improvements as I went. If I, and when, because I will, do it again. I am going to make a better one, meaning bigger better, with lots of other options.

    good work man. how come you didn't make some j hooks instead of that 1" bolt? I'd say it was hard going drilling all those holes. I think I'll just drill the ones I think I'll need.

      @robertpluso  11 років тому

      Thank You, and I think i was getting in a hurry to finish it. A one inch bolt and a recycled j hook from my old bench made for a fast j hook build. and for all the holes, well it was boring and long processes, but I did not want to later on look back and say, "I wish I made more holes". :)

    Hey Robert nice video, now I'm thinking of making my own, however, what is the thickness on the metal. I called my local metal shop and they are selling me a 20 foot bar, forgot the thickness, for 80ish. I guess it all depends on the thickness.

    • @robertpluso
      @robertpluso  9 років тому

      Jorge Castillo Sorry, when I bought the metal, I kind of eyed it. I think I went a little bit over. It would be lighter then what it is now. But at leas the sucker won't move now. Its not even encored down, and it does not move, even when I squat and slam the weight down fast.

    • @djshadowpain
      @djshadowpain 9 років тому +1

      Jorge Castillo Pretty sure 3mm thickness would do the job just fine. Unless you are a powerlifter and needed a monster rack, then go with 4mm thickness square tube. Aaand I think those are 2" square tubes. You can use 2x3s for a stronger build or a 3x3, 4x4 monster rack like the ones found on Rogue website.

Thanks, for commenting, and I just used my small mig welder. I bought it like six years ago, at Lowes. When I bought it, I used it to install the lift kit on a jeep yj. It was an 8 in lift kit that was about 80% welded on. I abused the jeep, trail riding, racing on trails, launched it once or twice, none of the welds broke. And I never went to welding school or was never thought by any one. Learned by experience. :)

      +Alex M To be honest with you, I don't know. When I made this I knew what I wanted as far as outside diameter, but not on the gauge. So when I went to get the metal I kind of looked around to what they had and made a decision according to what they had there. If I can borrow a gauge I will get that for you. I will ask around. Well, I wish I knew, I have put on it all the weight I own, and it does fine, it doesn't even stress one bit. I don't have much, just a little over five hundred pounds. Right now that is enough for me. Since my shoulder still bothers me a bit, and my knees as well so I am doing high reps and low to medium weight right now. I have started, about a month ago, mixing calisthenics along with my weight lifting to pre warm up my body, it seems to be helping with the pain.

      @robertpluso  11 років тому

      I thought about it, but after finishing it and before painting it. Two of my friends, (one being about 230bls and the other 250bls), hung from the pull up bar and racked back and forth, and side to side, (they were trying to tip it over), and the thing held very good. Did not even twicked. The side safety bars still went through the holes perfect, well as perfect or not as perfect as it was before. So I decided on no gussets. Now I am not very strong and not as strong as when I was younger but I have put 350bls on it and no problems.

    • @robertpluso

      😆, Well, I never said it was a "home" DIY, but it is a DIY, and it was built for home use, and I wish I had commercial-grade tools, but I don't, (unless that my Lowes bought, Lincoln welder, that almost cost me $400 count as commercial-grade). That and some Harbor freight tools here and there. And I build it at work because I spend most of the day there, (from 7:30 am till around 6:30 pm with an hour and a half lunch in the middle). And I am the boss at work, but I try to work on my projects on downtime. With my own tools, you see in my line of work we do not use the type of tools that are needed to build the kind of things I build.
