Dortmund is the most famous and largest city in the Ruhr area. A few years ago, Dortmund surpassed Essen with almost 600,000 inhabitants and therefore has the largest population of all the cities in the district. The city is located in the eastern Ruhr area. There aren't many sights in the center of Dortmund. However, the centre of Dortmund has a lot to offer in terms of shopping (largest pedestrian zone in the Ruhr area) and culture.
