A Floating bench seat in a shower is visually pleasing and can give more shower floor space in a small shower. A solid piece of stone is usually used to build the seat and is inserted into the tile for support while building the shower. Relying on just the tile to support the bench seat is probably not a good idea. In this video I show a simple method to build a floating bench seat support out of the same foam backer board to build the shower, you will need to use 2" foam board and a Stainless steel u-channel The installation of the support is quick and easy and very strong. Adhesive Kerdi-Fix sealant appropriate to adhere and bond the foam support seat in place.

im amazed that the Kerdi fix alone is enough to sustain the weight...amazing stuff.
Wow! Watching glue and foam hold you makes me think that I over engineer my benches. Thank you Sal!
Sal, you are a credit to the industry all the installers should watch your channel
Thanks for watching my video.
I thought I was loosing my mind when it went from a floating bench to a bench with a face at 20:00, and then back to floating bench at 21:16. I can't be the only one who saw this?
Great job by the way, 22 year Tile Setter in Austin Texas here. Keep up the good work.
I explain that in the video.
I must have missed it, take care and keep up the great work. I just started following you and look forward to seeing more of your stuff. Even after 22 yrs, I am always looking to see what I can borrow from other setters. Never stop learning.
@@CesarAdame I already have over 780 Videos, so plenty to watch.
Great work Sal. I was amazed at how strong the floating bench is.
😊👍
That bench seat is such beautiful material! Every time I see your installs, I just want ALL the tiles.
Thanks so much!
Just had this type of floating Schluter shower bench installed in my shower, but the tiling guys didn't clean up the squeeze-through on the bottom. Had to use a scraper and hammer to break it off myself. They also didn't tile beneath. Then the same crew tiled my whirlpool box in and got a bull-nose at each outside corner out of square pretty noticeable. I'm not happy with the job and am fixing to tell my contractor to either have these guys fix both issues or expect to not get paid what they're asking. As for the strength of the Schluter bench, I weigh about 215 and it holds my full weight just fine. Good video. Wish I'd had you do my jobs.
It is sad that many tile contractors do not possess the skill to complete the installation to an acceptable degree, what is worse, many of them do not care.
@@SalDiBlasi True, but I blame my contractor. He has, throughout the entire repair/renovation of my home cut corners... not to save ME money but to save himself money so that he could charge me premium costs and then pocket the difference. I'm sick of this clown and his shoddy little construction company... which is comprised of him, his son, brother and a nephew. I want to fire him, and our "contract" is a joke (just basically that I agree to let them renovate my house), so I may wind up telling him "OK, I'm satisfied that the renovation is complete so let's settle up now and goodbye". Thataway I can find a GOOD contractor to finish what's left. Advice? (I know about mechanic's lien, but I live in Tennessee and doubt he'd go that route)
We if he is not serving you well and you can get out of it, maybe it would be the best thing, nothing worse than entrusting your home to someone you don't trust.
@@SalDiBlasi Gave him a call today, it being 4th July weekend I kinda felt bad, but I let him know that if he wanted to continue with me those issues need to be fixed at no extra charge to me. I had also noticed that the brick subcontractors had done a poor job with the brick around some new windows that were brought up to egress, and he said he'd get them back out to fix their mistakes... so, long story short I'm going to give him another shot. This has actually been my second time having issues with the renovation/repair. My house was hit by the recent tornadoes in TN, so there's repair work and remodeling. Hey, thanks so much for reading my problems and giving some input. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
I guess that banding you add between the bench foam board and wall also adds a lot of strength too! Another great lesson, Sal. Thank you.
i am obsessed with your videos!
More coming every week.
Bro., it just absolutely amazes me how strong that bond becomes once it cures. A floating shelf that will hold a person with no supports. Freakin fantastic Bud!! Hoping all is well Dirty Jersey out!!
Some things do seem like magic.
true craftmanship, I enjoy watching your videos!
Always learning sal,👍
I started getting anxiety when you started going at that Kerdi Board with all those screws 😬 Isaac totally screwed up my head. Now it's extremely hard for me to trust kerdi band anymore. I'm wondering if building a 2x4 brace would be just as good 🤔 to keep the board in place while the adhesive sets up 🤷🏻♂️ THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD!! 👍🏻✌🏻
Cool man. That looks solid.
Great video sal!
You the man!
Good work as always 👊
What if a 250lb person were to slightly fall on the seat or two people sit on the bench. I think it should have more support in my opinion.
You would think so, but no. They’ve demonstrated this at seminars.
Couldn’t help but notice that Schluter was spelled wrong on your shower bench board. Spelled Schlueter?
Hi Sal, did I miss something or is it just adhesive holding the bench?
Thanks great work!
You missed something, the whole thing is supported by 2" foam board.
@@SalDiBlasi I get that. What is supporting the foam?
Looks great but shouldn't the directional troweling for that bench/stone should be side to side. Because you can't work the slab side to side to collapse the ridges.
The slab is very heavy, those ridges will collapse no problem
Amazing how that will hold 200lb to 250lb pertain with no supports under
Hey Sal, just came across this great video and it's blowing my mind. Quick question, can I use Kerdi fix to mount a 2 inch Kerdi board and make a bench to cement backer board? I'm already down the path with a remodel and I'm using cement board but I'd love to incorporate this floating shelf.. Any intel? Thanks so much!
Have not done that, but I don't think it will work as well with cement board.
Hello, Sal. Forgive me if you answered already, I'm hard of hearing, and the captions are not always reliable. Can you tell me if there's a way to do this or something similar if the shower is already tiled? I move into a new home in February, but the builders will not add a bench for me. I have to do it after closing, and I do not want to remove all the new tile that just got installed.
Thank you!
You can get something like this amzn.to/3Em8oRD
What other material can be used for the support, if I'm not using the Schulter System? Or, is that the best material for a floating bench?
Look into Better Bench amzn.to/3bZFlFk
Great video, could you tell what tile and stone you used in that shower?
Great Video. I am ready to get to work. Only 1 question, Do I need to Tile the underside of the seat??
Yes you do
Can you use 2x4s to support it while the kerdi dries rather than piercing the waterproofing?
Anything that works, I installed the shower floor right after so I didn't want anything in the way.
After watching your videos I’m thinking about retiling a small bathroom; 5’x8’ concrete slab floor and a 5’x2 1/2’ tub shower and curious how long should I approximate for time start to finish? Planning on using durock with Kerdi membrane with 3x12 subway tile. I’ve renovated a home before so I have some decent familiarity with tools. Grateful for any thoughts before I make the plunge!
Very difficult to say how long, so I am just going to say take your time and get it right.
Sal DiBlasi thanks for taking time to answer our questions!
Sal, what type of thinset did you use on that seat?
What if you installed the shower walls first and then the bench seat. Would that change how strong the bench seat would be?
You want the slab to be locked in and supported.
@@SalDiBlasi so would installing the wall tiles first negatively effect supporting the slab?
@@mattcraztex9940 for a floating bench, yes.
@@SalDiBlasi ok thanks was making sure the process was done like that for a reason.
Can I used this material with Hardie walls ?
Hey Sal, I am thinking about how you built the floating shower seat and doing it for my shower, I agree, it gives you more room. My question, do I have to use 2 " Kerdi backer for the walls too or can I go with 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 1", 1-1/2", less than 2"? What do you recommend?
Foam board on the wall is all 1/2", only the seat support is 2"
@@SalDiBlasi, thanks. I think I'm going to try that. Keep up the great work.
Blows me away how 6 screws is all it takes
Screws are just to hold it in place while the adhesive sets, nothing else, the have no structural value.
Hey Sal, Daniel here in the Midwest. I have a 3 foot bench seat coming up. I use go board for my walls, Iwish to use the same exact process you did here to install the floating bench,
just swap products, go board instead of kerdi, goboard prosealant vs kerdifix, etc. i have 2 questions:
One: the uchannel do you have a bench length where this becomes required for this foam board installation method or do you always use uchannel to stiffen up 2" board regardless if the bench is 1 foot long or 6 feet long.
Two: I was hoping to see how you tiled the underside of the bench seat. i couldn't find it in the video. my fault for skipping around or do you have video of it that didn't get uploaded?
Thanks Sal, as a young buck who was taught by an old buck how to do this trade, I appreciate your installation style and focus on quality.
I’m wondering what the weight limit is on the seat?
A lot
Seems like it would be easier to cut tile before and let bench seat rest on top of the tile.At least that's how I feel.
Might be easier, but the stone would also not be supported by the tiles cut around it relying entirely on the support of the kerdi board. The cut tiles around the stone, lock it in place and add support to the system.
I’m not convinced with how tight you cut that bench, basically you wiped all the glue off when you have to bang it to fit on the right side, you should have cut it 1/8 less
So me standing on it was not convincing enough.
Haven’t had a chance to do a floating bench yet.Hopefully one in the future
Sell it to the next customer that wants a regular bench seat
how much weight can this hold?
a lot, I was standing on it while installing and grouting the ceiling tile.
Just curious, why was there a support holding up the ceiling?
That was a pole for the laser level
@@SalDiBlasi what pole? What level are you using? Screw or magnet?
You say the screws do nothing, which is clear. I don't understand how KerdiFix can be strong enough to support a 300 lb (say) person sitting on the bench. I also don't see how the 2" thick Styrofoam seat can span 3' with that 300 lb person on it. I know that you know what you're doing and have done the same many times, I just don't understand the engineering that makes it possible.
I've built one in a Schluter class and I was as skeptical as you, but it really works!!
Well the 2" board is very stiff, the adhesive on three sides is very strong, the U channel stiffens the front edge, so alone the support is very strong, when you sit or stand on it you are applying a downward sheer force to the adhesive, which has a very large area of resistance when you add up all the surface in contact with the walls. Now add to that the stone, which is 1 1/4 thick which has it's own strength, additionally lock that in with the tile all around the stone, this results in a very strong system.
Also, the foam doesn't contribute significantly to the strength of the seat. It is like the web of an I-beam. The strength comes from the polyethylene membrane on the face of the Kerdi, like the flange of an I-beam.
Kirdy fix
So silicone is holding 110kilo ,my God things have changed rapidly
It is not silicone
@@SalDiBlasi kurdi bond the thing that comes out of a tube is not silicone, what is it?
A migical substance that has antigravitazionale properties that makes the seat float in mid air.🤪
@@SalDiBlasi 😂
What was that white stuff you put on your bench
Thinset
At 20:00 - 21:15 the bench is a totally different shower - and it’s also NOT FLOATING! Oy vey! At least he picks back up on the previous install after that.
Great video tutorial! Thank you very much!!! I use the Schluter shower system for all my showers. Glad to see you doing that here.
hard to hear you sometimes
That dont look sturdy. Granite on top of styrofoam plus the weight of an average person? Looks good though
It is much stronger than you think.
