11:40 That gear hob was made in Rockford Illinois, and probably back in the 40's-50's, and it's still purring along. You won't see the new machines lasting that long.

there is nothing on those that breaks tbh. bearings are replaced, gears when they wear.. they can make new ones themselves there for it. it is just an electric motor spinning metal.

It is very inefficient to keep dropping the parts to the floor only to pick them up again for the next operation. They should have tables with metal tops to stack the parts on and then slide them to the next operation. That would speed up production, reduce worker fatigue and keep the parts cleaner.
considering it looked like they were using dirty and even painted recycled plate as the raw material I don't think keeping the parts clean was much of a consideration. But you're right about how inefficient it is to move the material so many times. I'm sure a little thought would have saved them hundreds of man hours in wasted motion.
Everything you said is so true. One rough punch with sprocket, teeth, hole, gear and bends to reduce warping at one go could save them huge separate machine costs as well! The shorter green liquid punch thing literally made me cringe. The idea of chalk or dry sawdust use to reduce rusting inside storage was smart for most types of metal.

The machine we see at 12:48 is called a "Gear Hobbing" machine. The one shown is by Barber-Colman, and that company produced two sizes in 1910 that could precisely cut teeth in gears. So that machine is pretty old. And still going.
These men are pretty cool workers.They can't make a mistake with such a machine that punches thru steel like hot knife thru butter.Thanks for vid & my motorbike sprocket.
That sprocket cutter was one mean machine in the 1950’s in the Harley Davidson factory in Wisconsin

They could easily build something out of cheap wood to make this thing even a little bit more safe, but as we can see with the missing tables for the products between steps, they just coulnd't care enough for that, so why bother with worker safety?
Would be interesting how many men already have massive head injury because of machines like that over there.

Без закалки эти зубья быстро приходят в негодность.Помню как на ЗиД 50-пилот их менял без конца пока не нашел советскую звезду.

These days, state side, we would just cut these out on a CNC laser. Throw a sheet of 10 gauge (or whatever size you require)on the table, nest them as close as possible, and cycle start. About 15 minute later, a sheet full of finished parts.
Though, I can really appreciate the process they use here. Reminds me of my apprenticeship many years ago.
Question is will it be cheaper to do it with a cnc laser cutter considering they cost over 100 grand usd and cost of consumables.

we needs those on our bicycles here in the usa. Everything is paper thin chinese junk. One hard pedal and the sprocket will bend. bicycles cost 100.00 at walmart. I can find old 80's bicycles that use those parts.. hard to find though in descent condition.

This factory does’nt differ that much from the metalfactory I used to work in when I was about 18yo. Some50 years ago. I was machining plates used in telecom relais. Only I had to wear an overall and safety glasses. While machine I had to keep the oil coolant on spot (Shell Tellus No10). I would be slapped at the back of my head by the foreman if I let it run dry. And we used bin, steel bins. Keep tools and product of the floor at all time.

I notice that hobbing machine was made in Rockford IL. bout 50 miles from me.
They use some phosphate coating as the lubricant (white powder) on the plates to keep the dies run long tears.
These lads never heard of health and safety, if something does go wrong I can only imagine 😳
I’m so grateful I live where I do and was able to have my job delivering yachts. I did something I enjoyed and the owners were happy their purchase had arrived un-damaged.

Hmm, maybe it would have been a good idea if the US had continued to manufacture machine tools. Some of these machines are as old as I am,(79)and still going strong.
The process requires all parts be placed on the floor before the next step. No bins, tables or carts allowed!

They should have carts that can handle the sprockets and they could roll it over to the next operation. And that is only one size sprocket. I like the way the teeth were made.

С листовой 65Г, сырец. никакой термички. вот как сделал, так и езжу до сих пор. У рускоязычных, это шо, вывих мозга такой, или родовая травма, шо людей так хаите? всё путем там. И со сталью, и с термичкой. бы ло бы плохое, не покупали бы. Да и население пол лярда.

Sweat shop enviroments are the cheapest manufacturers - health and safety limit production and raise costs. I was still working in enviroments like that in England as late as the 1990's..... before we lost all our manufacturing buisnesses.

no, they should be soft. you don't want them to crack. also they are a wear item and are designed to wear out at the same time as the front sprocket and chain so they can be replaced all at the same time for the best performance. hardening them would just be a waste as they would need to be replaced anyway regardless of condition after the other parts go.

@@MievaVid по составу оборудования, расположению его, настроенности, отработанности процесса, выглядит так, как будто кроме звёздочек они ни чего не делают, возможно ошибаюсь, но у меня впечатление именно такое.
Звезды эти не подвергаются закалке, по этому изнашиваются быстро, соответственно без работы не сидят.
Мне кажется, что у них задача - занять чем-то людей. Вместо того, чтобы сделать один путёвый штамп и получать звёздочку за одно движение пресса.

soften the sharp edges i think
To dry it. Sharps edges is done with stones or steel balls. It couldbe the just let the sprockets round each other of. In our factory we used a magnetic lift and warm air to get rid of the sawdust. In fact, the most common proces is to use a trommel with water, agrinding compound and stones or steel bearing balls to round of the product. Then by magnetic lift it would be tranferred to a sift with sawdust and blown with warm air. After that our products would be heat treated.
I work in a high volume machine shop in North America and we have a couple Ultra Matic machine just like that, except ours are in worst shape lol
