This kind of cooking was pretty common with moms/wives of the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s back when people often fed their families by combining different canned foods. In the midwest they had "hot dishes" which were almost all similar to this: just throw some pasta, canned vegetables, and canned soup together and bake together.

      at least here it makes sense since British baked beans already have some seasoning as do the fish sticks, so you'd really only need some salt for the potatoes and pepper, which often recipes either assume you'll add or they leave it up to people to add what they want at the table. For a dish like this even a good cook would likely add little to no seasoning to it.

    I can totally imagine Zim’s face in the cafeteria when he’s forcing himself to eat human food to fit in.
    I think some of the food British people consider comfort food has it’s origins in the austerity during and after WWII. Beans are cheap and require very little effort or energy (gas/electricity and human energy) to cook. Beans over toast is a classic. Vegemite and Marmite were both invented as a source of vitamins like B vitamins and folate and protein. They were fed to soldiers and prisoners during both world wars. They were effective and continued to be used after WWII.
    When something is part of childhood it can become a nostalgic food you crave. Like the jello salads I had as a kid and still love. Or the chicken and dumplings my grandmother made from chicken, bouillon powder, and flour. It’s one of the cheapest meals you could make with a chicken carcass and leftover chicken yet it will always be one of my favorite meals.

    • @arthas640
      @arthas640 6 місяців тому

      definitly. The whole "British people dont use spices" stereotype is largely false and if you look at recipes from before WW2 or after the 1970s you'll find tons of spices, during the Victorian era and earlier even the poor still used spices, soup kitchens would still use some cayenne and black pepper for example. WW2 and the resulting rationing lead to a lot of British people eating lot of canned meat, canned vegetables, and dried beans/pasta and a lot of spices and seasonings were more expensive and harder to get so cooks used them less and the British never really shook the reputation of eating bland food even though it's a long outdated stereotype. It's kind of funny though since the British are the ones who brought spices to many parts of the world, they brought peppers to Africa, they brought Curry to Japan, and there were a handful of spices and dishes they brought to China.

    The beans thing. It just depends. It's a budget food but also a convenience food because you can pair it with lots of things and cook it quickly. Might eat a few tins in a week or not eat them for a month. It doesn't just go on toast though, you can put some cheese on top and you've upgraded yourself to a cheesy beano XD. Beans are a MUST in a full English breakfast which is very popular but you can also pair it with many breakfast things like sausage, egg, bacon and then some beans for diversity. Obviously there's many thing's it can be paired with dinner wise too. For example, fish fingers beans and mashed potatoes is a meal most people from the Uk have eaten. Just not in a pie. Pie with some beans on the side, any kind of meat filled pastry can have some beans on the side. Almost anything can be paired with some beans. Ok maybe not everything but many things XD. It's not just beans though, its a tomato sauce very similar to the spaghetti hoops tomato sauce, most people should understand that. Slightly sweet. Beans are VERY nutritious too. Beans deserve love not hate.

      @@michel0dy Sugar in baked beans is actually the norm, the dish is based off medieval pottage but the modern form of baked beans are from around the 17th or 18th century and commonly had molasses added and today adding molasses or a BBQ style sauce (which has brown sugar) are common. Modern British baked beans are similar to Boston baked beans and still have added sugar of some sort, the US version just has a bit more but it's not even that large of a difference. 1 serving of either British or Boston baked beans are around 1/2 cup or 130g and the British Heinz baked beans have 9g of sugar while Bush's baked beans contain 12g so you're only talking about a 3 gram difference between the 2.

    Beans are served with everything, even toast. (They're not like our baked beans. It's just a tomato sauce, no molasses.) The Who liked them, I guess. On the cover of their album The Who Sell Out, and Ann-Margret wallows in them in Tommy.

    My class went to England on our graduation trip and I learned two things about British Cuisine: First is that they do love their baked beans apparently and second that the reason for it is probably that it fits their flavor palate perfectly, which means they taste like nothing. At least the place where we stayed at had a talent to make any food completely flavorless. It was honestly quite astonishing. We never figured out how they managed to make any food, no matter how simple or complex, absolutely free of any flavor.

    Although I don't like baked beans that much, beans are a total staple here in Brazil. We just cook them with bay and seasoning and have them like that with rice and some meat (the most common way, sometimes with French fries), or we make a black bean stew with pork, bacon and other stuff (feijoada), or liquidize them and then mix with manioc flour to make a paste, or have them whole with again manioc flour, fried eggs, sausages and fried pork belly (feijão tropeiro, or drover beans). Those are the most common forms I know, and we'll mostly have one of those every day, for lunch and dinner. I don't because I like cooking so I like to vary what I make a lot, but most families will have only those with rice and beef every single day, at least in my state.

    As a British person( not ethnically) I can confirm that we eat baked beans alot (at home, I eat other cusine because, like I said, I'm not ethnically British).
    It's in school lunches, and they even put them together with "potato bites" which are essentially tater tots and served with sausages and fish sticks.
    If you thought that Constituted a war crime, then just to let you know that on the school lunch menu, beans were optional served with freaking burgers.
    Heck, there's even a frozen pizza by Heinz with beans on it... (it's true)
    Enough of roasting British cusine (to be Frank it's pretty easy to), they're also served in some British restaurants such as "Greggs" with their "cheese n Beans melt" which is a type of pastie (A pasties is a pastry with meat and vegetables in it).
    So to conclude, yes, we eat beans alot. Why? Probably because we have an abundance of them which I don't know why.
