- Welcome to Day 406! Thanks to the help of some steelers in the community, today I swapped out the original 1975 Sho~Bud single coil pickup in my guitar with a Bill Lawrence 705 Humbucker. In this video, I walk you through my process for swapping the pickups and blindly A/B test the two pickups at the end. Let me know down in the comments if you correctly guessed which pickup was which in the test, and let me know if you have any pickup swapping tips.

I hate to tell you this but your show bud single coil pickup sounds better then the other pickup
I put the same pickup in my Mullen G2. I have the height set between the top of the pickup and strings by using 1 quarter instead of 2 that it was originally set at and that made a difference in the tone also.
Awesome!
i'd imagine the pickup screws should spin freely in the mounting holes of the pickup to help the springs do their job. it would be interesting to know the resistance of the pickup compared to the old one.
Awesome job! It sounds great pal! Thanks for the shout out :D
Really appreciate your guidance on this from my Pickup Swap Tips video last week, John! Thank you very much. Hope you’re doing well, my friend!
@@ChristoHuntington I am doing well, and I hope you are also. Keep on pickin'!
@@JohnSims3 Good to hear! All is well here. Will do, sir.
The original pick up sounds much better and has way more sustain. I have a George L in mine and it sounds good like they both do, in yours but when you playing with a band or group, just messing around, it gets very muddy sounding. so, I am seriously considering going to a single coil on mine, to get rid of the mud.
The springs are there to raise and lower the height of the pickup
Got it! I realized that after mentioning the newer-style pickup mounts… thanks!
Sounds different. Better/worse is subjective. All that matters is what YOU like.
Personally, I’m lazy and I thought the stock pup sounded fine. The difference was not worth the money and time spent.
What Would Happen If A Pedalsteel Pickup Wer Installed
Onto A Lapsteel Guitar? Would It
Make The Lapsteel Sound Like
A Pedalsteel?
Good job I like it I want to swap out my pickups on my pedal steel guitar and wire them hot any subjections on how I suppose to wire it like that I’m going to try and do it myself
Hey Johnny! If I were to intentionally try to wire the pickups hot, I would get them as close to the strings as possible, without having my picks touch them when I pluck the strings, and without the strings buzzing after I pluck them. The easiest and most reliable solution would be to buy a humbucking pick up wound pretty dramatically to get a hotter output off the bat post install.
Good morning in got a question the full tone Like the Emmon's Rasor are have the same Sound than the 705 Bill Lawrence ? Or the Sound
is different in fact with the different coil .. ?
I play regular guitar but have been getting into slide lately, have you ever tried the Valco/Supro string thru pickups at all and if so how do they compare with these? I have used six string Bill Lawrence pickups before and found them very serviceable for bridge position configurations (Dimebag Darrell and Nuno Bettencourt also used the Bill Lawrence, the L500 if I recall). I would really like to build a dedicated slide guitar and was planning on doing a string thru pickup mod but you have got me curious about using one of the Bill Lawrences instead....
I haven't tried the Valco/Supro string through pickups - that sounds like a killer idea! Keep me posted with which route you decide to go down.
Did you slide with it or only just play stationary chords?
You slide with it!
@@ChristoHuntington yes, but in the video I didn’t see much sliding :)
A lefty ?
Yes!
