Tonnes of fine music from the 80s that people have never heard. I'm 49 but this is the first time I've heard this and it's love at first sight. I bet there are more and more tonnes of undiscovered 80s music waiting in the shadows.
This LP was one of the best releases ever-every song could have been released as a single-Greg had an incredible voice and a great ear for that West Coast sound that is my favorite genre from 1975-1983
You must check out his recent release “Heart To Heart”...an amazing album of demos compiled from sessions from 1983-1984 most likely. Just as good as this album, but most of it was unavailable before 2017.
St. Louis sound Bru'! Greg never hailed from LA...never had much interaction there...recorded everything in St. Louis and Nashville....went to LA to do American Bandstand and Solid Gold...refused Merv Griffin...refused to do business in LA...went home to Nashville and never went back. St. Louis boy to the bone.
He had nothing to do with LA...how could his sound be that? Everything you are listening to was recorded at one of 3 studios in Nashville Tennessee...this song, as I recall, was recorded at Quadraphonic studios in Nashville. The sound is influenced by Philly sound and Motown...not the made up genre "Westcoast" by fans of that era. @79SteelyMatt
Lyrics (Transcribed from the songs) : Early in the morning it's 4 o'clock. Running like a devil try to catch the sun. Cause I can see in the distance. A terrible storm is a rolling again. And I don't wanna be around. When it comes. *So I'm giving up, I can't take it no more. I just can't go on this way. Only one thing I left to say. I'm giving up, I can't take it no more. I really gonna leave this time. And I'm not gonna change my mind. We're livin in real bad situation. And it's takin all I got just to hold my ground. I've been walking in a danger zone since I met you girl. But a bad news for you, You're not the only game in town. (Repeat *) -- Damn, I love "But a bad news for you, You're not the only game in town." lines very much :)
This whole album is a masterpiece, the key shift after Huff’s smoking’ solo takes it to another level. Greg’s posthumous ‘The Demo Years’ release is worth a listen too
I have 19 years and this music vibrated my senses and have no idea shakes my powers of perception especially my past life in new york! greetings from mexico westcoast
Greg demanded that Dan Huff play on this project...Dan's first master session. John Ryan and the label didn't want to use any of the Nashville session players. John thought they were amateur sounding. Greg promised them in exchange for spec pay that they could play on his album if he got a deal. Greg lived up to his bargain. Sadly, Greg was not credited for launching the pop careers of some of these guys. But I think they secretly didn't like Greg...he was a heavy handed in the studio and sometimes volatile. But he knew how to produce and showed these guys how to produce. Greg guided Dan who mostly overplayed on tracks. Greg had a great ear and knew what he wanted...sometimes it came to fist to cuffs unfortunately.
Of course...there is a lot of false and misleading facts and speculation about Greg, his life, his death and his music online...it is comical at times. and irritating in many cases. @@classicrockstation
This incredible track needs way more exposure. If anyone is on any popular YT reaction channels I urge you to get it up for reaction. I'll be doing it as my next request on one that I follow. Hopefully it kickstarts more people hearing this amazing man's tunes!
Yes that is correct. Greg fought the label and producer John Ryan to use his demo session players. Dan Huff, Gary Lunn, Phil Nash and James Stroud. Greg had been recording demos in Nashville since 1977. John Ryan used top tiered LA session players and believed these Nashville players were substandard, especially Dan, and at the time they were. John was using AMAZING pop rock guitarists. Greg was a very loyal person and made a promise to them that he would use them. He was raised in the rough streets of St. Louis and understood the value of friendship. He chiseled Dan into a session player. Dan consistently overplayed on tracks. Greg stopped that. Greg had great production talent but lacked that final step over to master ability. His insistence on using his demo players led to discourse between him, John and the label which never really healed. They literally fought over it. John and the label caved, but, it was the beginning of the end which stopped subsequent product from being produced and released on a major label level. The follow up single, a duet with his sister, was pulled from radio early on by the label as retaliation because Greg would not let sister Sandy sign a singles record deal with the label. Greg went independent after that, not having the support from the label nor the funding for follow-up product, per contract. He was blackballed by the majors as the industry is very small, operating in small power blocks by kronies and no one would touch him thereafter. His regular tennis partner until death was Irv Azzoff...still no deal. Lolol!! Dan used this project and access to LA as a springboard to his career and went on to be quite successful. Dan never thanked Greg as far as I know, at least not publicly. I saw one recent Dann Huff interview where Greg's name was briefly mentioned. Maybe he didn't know how Greg battled for him, to his own detriment. Greg's influence on Nashville and the music it produces today reverberates Greg Guidry's influence through, Dan, James and the plethora of musicians who felt his graciousness, friendship and sometimes crazy wrath. This is an accurate and true biographical representation. Greg was a tremendous talent both in music and business. But unfortunately was a victim of the same character flaws which led to his great music.
Pour moi un des meilleurs album de West Coast des années 80's à l'époque chez CBS il est d'ailleurs venu en france pour un concert à disneyland paris il y a une quinzaine d'années .
BODY LANGUAGE
Lesson one.
How is this brilliant track not more popular?? Staggering. This is amazing! That falsetto at the end! WOW!

I need this album for my White Soul section.

Michael McDonald BG vocals pretty awesome as well! RIP GG
Mike didn't sing on these or any of Greg's songs...that is his brother and sisters.
Great song!!!!!
This is basically "baby come back" with a different cord change.
Greg wrote this song in St. Louis in the mid 70s prior to the release and probably creation of Player's Baby Come Back.
Wow-just as good as “Goin’ Down”
Possibly the perfect representation of classic AOR.
This is the first album Dann Huff played on a as a session player.
