@@Aldersandfirs I get that some people feel the social aspects of Magic are lost with Arena, but honestly, that’s not a big factor for me. For me, the crucial issue is understanding what’s happening at any moment during a match. I didn’t initially think readability was a major issue since I assumed that someone who doesn’t play Magic or is new to it wouldn’t be interested in competitive play. But, as the original comment shows, that’s clearly not the case. I'm not sure a middle ground exists, mostly because the issue goes beyond just zooming in on a card that's played. For instance, if a player casts "Duress" they review every card in their opponent's hand and takes notes on a paper. Should the organizers zoom in on that paper occasionally? Or should they add graphics that show which cards have been revealed? And that's just one card-there are countless cards with even more complex interactions. I am actually kind of appalled that the commentators don't have a good mtg knowledge. I heard them many times across this and other games commenting some plays that wouldn't have played out as they thought. I think it is not too difficult to ask of them to have a good knowledge of standard cards, especially at a level as high as this. Probably most people are not bothered by this, but I personally think that the commentary loses a lot of value when the commentators are just misjudging cards constantly. I am a very average mtg player, not a skilled one and neither a competitive one, but even I know how the most relevant cards in standard work, and I think they should as well. Some examples are: in this game they didn't know that the dying dreadknight doesn't get exiled and in one of the semifinals they were not aware of the "if you cast it" clause on the excruciator.
Why does nobody have "Render Inert" in their sideboard? It's the perfect counter against Archfiend of the Dross and will make the opponent lose instantly if they cannot counter it.
I love how magic is such a bad card game they have to do these cross overs with other dying franchises just to stay alive. Maybe if they reworked their archaic mana system the game would stop dying
I cant imagine a more harrowing card to play against with Carvalho than Dreadknight - a perfect card for getting 'distracted' about the state of. There's no sense behind letting someone with this long history of dirty play and cheating continuously compete in tournaments.
