Yagyū Hyōgonosuke: (柳生 兵庫助, 1579 - 1650) or - Toshitoshi (利厳) was the founder of the Owari mainline of the Yagyū Shinkage-ryū style of swordsmanship in the early Edo period.
He was a son of Yagyū Toshikatsu and a grandson of Yagyū Muneyoshi (Sekishūsai).
His name is sometimes mispronounced as Toshiyoshi, but the kanji 厳 reading was passed down as "toshi" in the Yagyū family.
His Zokumyō (first name taken at the time of the Genpuku) was originally Chūjirō, and his Kaimyō (Dharma name) was Jo'un-sai ; though he is mostly remembered as Hyōgonosuke.
He was favored by the old Sekishūsai over Munenori, who had been recommended to the Shōgun.
From 1603 to 1607, he served Kato Kiyomasa. Thereafter, he became an itinerant warrior.
Beginning in 1615, he served Tokugawa Yoshinao, the founder of the Owari branch of the Tokugawa clan.
He directly instructed Yoshinao in the Yagyū Shinkage-ryū.
That last draw was so quick and smooth, damn. Cut through him like butter.
He didn't even cut the man, he struck him with the spine of his blade. Meaning the man actually likely suffered nothing more than broken ribs.

The Yagyu sword fighting art is Yagyu Shinkage Ryu which still exists in a number of lines. Tenshin Ryu is not a school of koryu bugei.

Yagyu means clan followed by the name of the clan or sword fighting school and is not the person's actual full name. His full name should be Hyogo Nosuke. Not Hyogonosuke as one word...LOL. Study your Japanese names dude.
Yagyu was his Clan/family name. Yagyu Hyogonosuke was the grandson of Yagyu Muneyoshi Sekishusai, nephew of Yagyu Munenori Tajima no Kami (founder of the Edo branch of Yagyu Shinkage Ryu), and founder of the Owari branch of Yagyu Shinkage Ryu. Prior to Sekishisai inheriting the school from Kamiizumi, YSR was just Shinkage Ryu (New Shadow Style), and at the time this was taking place still prolly woulda been known as just Shinkage Ryu. It started getting called Yagyu Shinkage Ryu or just Yagyu Ryu for short later cuz of it's association with the Yagyu family.
