“A Star, A Star” sounded like a memetic kill trigger to me. It seemed like a way to underline the ruthlessness of the Foundation in dealing with this issue
Due to the way it's notated on the document (A*), I'm led to believe it is referencing the black hole at the center of our galaxy, Sagittarius A*. Astronomers pronounce the * as "Star"
Seems like it has a delay and/or mind control aspect to it too, given that he tells the reader to ask their deacon about it, which would spread it amongst fifthists
I'm suddenly thinking about what would happen if SCP-134 (Stella, star eyed child) overheard it. Would the terminus in her eyes correspond with her thoughts or would it be a collective of thoughts from everyone focusing on the stars from the fifth world perspective since the constellations don't correspond to anything we can see from Earth. Since Stella's father was a physicist that dabbled in the occult and later was told he had a sparkle in his eyes before ultimately descending into madness (a parental sacrifice perhaps). After noticing Stella's eyes, her mother saw it as a bad omen and abandoned her, which is an interesting take on Japanese folklore and an interesting way to have the stars 'reflect' on themselves through her eyes.

Star Signals and the 5th Church in general is what first got me into the SCP Foundation. Good ole 4Chan lol.. I really enjoy the Extra Credit things you’ve been doing. Thank you so much!
42:52 What? We can DEFINITELY see light from individual stars more than a hundred light-years away. Just this year the James Webb telescope detected a gravitationally-lensed star that's something like 28 billion light years from us, we see it as it existed roughly 12.8 billion years ago (it's more distant than 12.8 billion light years because of the expansion of the universe since that light was emitted). Unless you're specifically talking only about stars that are visible to the naked eye, instruments can almost certainly resolve light from short-lived giant stars that are currently expired.
Was about to say this, we can definitely see stars that died millions of years ago through special instruments. We are able to look back all the way to the start of the universe, although not perfectly since our telescopes aren’t up to snuff yet. Typical of a reddit user I guess to think themselves smarter.

I kinda had a rough idea what was going on at the end of the debriefing but the extra credit really did me a solid by solidifying some of my thoughts while pointing out other features that I had missed. Thanks again for adding that tad bit.
I need to point it out that in the extra credit when it says light reaching us is only a hundred years old is blatantly untrue. If a star is a million light years away, it takes a million years to reach us
You don’t need to point that out, as none of the stars seen with the naked eye are millions of light years away (aside from the andromeda galaxy in extremely dark conditions)
I don't think they meant the light was literally only a hundred years old, but instead that light we currently *see* is about one hundred years old, basically that our view of visible stars is only lagging by about a century, not as much as the book was implying
@@Zolanark There is no "lag by a century" - the further we look into space, the farther you look back in time. When you look at the sky at any random night, each star is a snapshot of a different time. Two stars that "appear" next to each other can be thousands of light-years apart, and as a result, the time the light from each star takes to reach your eyes can be tens of thousands of years apart. One particular star - Betelgeuse (in the constellation Orion) - is the only star aside from Sol (Our Sun) we've been able to take a picture of and have something other than a single dot. It's got the right combination of big enough and close enough. It's near the end of its life, and frankly, it may have already exploded. We won't know until we see the explosion, and only then will we be able to say "yeah, it exploded 642 years ago."
On the other hand, because nothing can move faster than light, that means whatever we see is for all intents and purposes happening simultaneously. It makes no possible difference for us to consider it to have happened ages ago.
man ive heard star signals like three or four times but this one is the best- mostly because of the end analysis, excellent work there. Really sets this apart from all the other videos I really really liked that part.
Love extra credit. So many people contribute and add so much to each SCP its so nice to hear more. If you started adding on Tales connected to certain SCPs that would be awesome. Extra extra credit.

My favourite SCP from one of my favourite series and I'd still never made the connection to real-life parallels until your Extra Credits reading - tremendous work as ever in parsing this eerie tapestry, can't wait to see you do more.
You've really stepped up your channel recently. I've been hooked got a long time but recently I've been watching episodes multiple times just for the quality
43:15 the oldest light we get is way older than that. The CMBR is from recombination iirc, which is within spitting distance of "in the beginning." The furthest star ever detected has light that is 12.9bn years old. It does raise an interesting question- if you look at the sky, and somehow were able to pick out just the stars that would be visible with the naked eye- so no quasars, no galaxies, just the stars that have a +6 or better apparent magnitude (about the dimmest you can see with the naked eye), what would the sky look like? Regardless, there's a bunch of visible stars that are further than 100 light years away. Betelgeuse is 500 light years away, and it's visible with the naked eye. Not sure where they got the 100 years number. I'd say a majority of the light hitting earth from non-sun stars is probably from dead stars. Not that I would have any idea how to do that estimation. Pushing back a bit on what seems to be the general consensus in favour of extra credits, I do agree that it's helpful for contextualising stories, but if it's prone to individual errors, especially since the analysis can be wrong, it might be more trouble than it's worth. Like in this case, around 50:00 they point out that Class B amnestics are effective because they make you forget, but don't dwell on the fact that Class B specifically are used to "wipe back," so to speak. Class A would be useless here, because you would need to be able to prompt the memory you were trying to remove. That's the sort of thing I'd find useful to have pointed out- when people say "class B," they mean "we're going to nuke the last two weeks of your life." Just feels a bit iffy to me. Might be overreacting, especially since the Scientology angle is definitely interesting. I didn't know most of that. But yeah, idk about some of that information. I trust you on this more than me though- I don't have much experience with this sort of thing.
"If you've read this book correctly, and you have, tomorrow with be the start of your weekend" not me listening to this on a Friday before the first weekend I've ever had off from work
Given that the researcher says "ask your Deacon about it" at the end, I'm thinking the latter as well, that he was not completely removed himself. Very good entry, and another great entry into the "extra credit" stuff! Thanks again, Volgun!
I kinda figured it was an infectious and/or mind controlling memetic kill agent. Given he tells the reader to ask their deacon about it, the intent would be for it to spread amongst fifthists
Keep doing extra credit! Sometimes when I’m listening to these I’ll forget details or misunderstand something so the story won’t make sense and the extra credit helps alleviate that!
So, this was another amazing article, you're killing it Volgun! But I did want to suggest possibly indenting the Extra Credit to denote sections that are taking verbatim from the original text. For example around the 42:00 mark there's the statement "Access to the document is to be... ... or an O5 personnel." Or "Did you know that... and then become like the stars!" It's not a massive change, but it'd be helpful I think. The change in voice is an excellent touch for the purely auditory watchers, but I honestly get a tad impatient and read ahead occasionally.
This is a great one for the extra credit, while it doesn't necessarily need extra explanation itself, it's a core piece to understanding a lot of other scp. "Required reading" if you will. (But remember, not on weekends)
This has been a great return to me actively listening/reacting to your videos. I have always loved the longer ones, and this one did not disappoint. Thank you, it was nice to return to this universe - and get a new chance to listen to the absolutely screwed-up lengths that The Foundation will go to.
I'm really confused by the "some of the oldest light we get are only about a hundred years old". We can see the andromeda galaxy and that's millions of light years away, meaning the light is millions of years old, right?
Wow! Now THIS is a well written SCP! Very well written. I love how this gives so much great world building and really documents the real things the Foundation does. And I love when the Foundation collaborates with irl civilian or governmental agencies.. Also, loved the extra content at the end. I hope its a reoccurring thing?
It’s always interesting actually coming across origin entries to some of these SCP entries. Never thought too much about the Fifthist but now have a big interest as it’s part of that memetic stuff I love about the SCP multiverses. I thought there was a parallel to Scientology but this definitely goes in a Memetic direction! As for the church it seems someone thought it was a good idea to publish this book only to realize its effects were cause a lot more trouble then planned. Hence why they helped with information suppression. This book is obviously designed to rewrite the mind into what the church desires, but hides it as a self help book. Often the case with any cult wanting new members. Would like to speculate more but I don’t know a lot of the fifthest church so definitely would love to hear more entries on this topic
I really appreciate the extra credit briefings, and tbh would love if you could make some addendums to do the same for previous SCPs you covered that were insanely interesting.
Extra credits work so well! For some SCPs it is so necessary to be able to get the full enjoyment out of it.
I love the extra credit stuff. It gives me most of the extra research I want and in a neat little “wink at the fourth wall” way.
Read this before but never realized the connection with scientology. Extra credit is great!
Love extra credit. So many people contribute and add so much to each SCP its so nice to hear more. If you started adding on Tales connected to certain SCPs that would be awesome. Extra extra credit.
Omg! I loved TES' reading of Star Signals, I can't wait to finish this one!
It’s refreshing to hear a new take on this SCP after TheExploringSeries’ reading, and your voice acting is, as usual, phenomenal
Keep up the great work!
When you're about to look for some new SCP's and coincidentally TheVolgun uploaded a new video just a few seconds ago.
I've been watching these for a while and the extra credit bits are great! Please keep doing them, TheVolgun!
My favourite SCP from one of my favourite series and I'd still never made the connection to real-life parallels until your Extra Credits reading - tremendous work as ever in parsing this eerie tapestry, can't wait to see you do more.
I need to leave the house and run around but I just saw this and am excited as hell for when I get to listen! :D
TheVolgun is really earning his subs, this is quality!
You've really stepped up your channel recently. I've been hooked got a long time but recently I've been watching episodes multiple times just for the quality
I literally cannot watch any other SCP readers because of the quality of this channel.
Absolutely astounding. I love your production style and values. Cheers!
That's the sort of thing I'd find useful to have pointed out- when people say "class B," they mean "we're going to nuke the last two weeks of your life."
Just feels a bit iffy to me. Might be overreacting, especially since the Scientology angle is definitely interesting. I didn't know most of that. But yeah, idk about some of that information.
I trust you on this more than me though- I don't have much experience with this sort of thing.
Photons don't age though, so to get light of any 'years old' we would need to take it from the future. Obvious when you think about it.
Absolutely love extra credit I love hearing the scp explained without having to look up extra stuff since I'm usually at work while I listen
Just what I need. I love falling asleep to story time
"If you've read this book correctly, and you have, tomorrow with be the start of your weekend" not me listening to this on a Friday before the first weekend I've ever had off from work
The Volgun *covers a SCP that mentions Machine Elves*
Every one who's seen them on a DMT trip *shutters in emotional damage*
I’m digging the little explanations at the end. It helps to contextualize the more confusing elements. Keep up the good work man it’s good
Given that the researcher says "ask your Deacon about it" at the end, I'm thinking the latter as well, that he was not completely removed himself. Very good entry, and another great entry into the "extra credit" stuff! Thanks again, Volgun!
Or it could be that Sagittarius A* is a super massive black hole and a devourer of stars making this a kind of threat.
@@prophet8724 that's clever lol
I kinda figured it was an infectious and/or mind controlling memetic kill agent. Given he tells the reader to ask their deacon about it, the intent would be for it to spread amongst fifthists
@@daltongarrett3393 that is also a really good idea. I guess either of us could be right
EXTRA CREDIT RULES SO MUCH thank you volgun the ep was awesome as always 👏
Keep doing extra credit! Sometimes when I’m listening to these I’ll forget details or misunderstand something so the story won’t make sense and the extra credit helps alleviate that!
So, this was another amazing article, you're killing it Volgun!
But I did want to suggest possibly indenting the Extra Credit to denote sections that are taking verbatim from the original text. For example around the 42:00 mark there's the statement "Access to the document is to be... ... or an O5 personnel." Or "Did you know that... and then become like the stars!"
It's not a massive change, but it'd be helpful I think. The change in voice is an excellent touch for the purely auditory watchers, but I honestly get a tad impatient and read ahead occasionally.
Fifthist SCPS are the one that probably benefit the most from a section like Extra Credits. Amazing work Volgun!
EXTRA CREDIT ROCKS. Never stop please :) Helps make this great content even better
You’re the reason I came back to the SCP universe
Volgun's videos are pretty much my entire experience with SCP. Nothing else keeps my interest in it as much, even just trying to read them.
The one where Clef writes a book after main-lining DMT/Datura/mushies while looking at the stars.
Mate
Speaking as someone from England I'm so impressed with your voice acting. I can't believe your range
Please keep these Extra Credits going. It helps a lot.
I'm really confused by the "some of the oldest light we get are only about a hundred years old". We can see the andromeda galaxy and that's millions of light years away, meaning the light is millions of years old, right?
Photons don't age though, so to get light of any 'years old' we would need to take it from the future. Obvious when you think about it.
When a star 'dies' it can become a black hole. Light can't escape a black hole.
@@sheakennedy-ordway1156 and? light from its early years would obviously still have escaped.
Fifthists are kinda dumb
@thisisastrobbery363 sounds like SOMEBODY hasn't praised the starfish today ;)
Was just wondering about the program and then The Extra Credit answered many unanswered questions. The Extra Credits is a wonderful addition.
This is perfect! Just the right one to do an extra credit!
i was just done watching the last week's video a few minutes ago and now i have more! keep up the good work!
This entire series has come MILES from what it used to be and im LOVIN it
Wow! Now THIS is a well written SCP! Very well written.
I love how this gives so much great world building and really documents the real things the Foundation does. And I love when the Foundation collaborates with irl civilian or governmental agencies..
Also, loved the extra content at the end. I hope its a reoccurring thing?
I’ve been here since, I think 10k subscribers? Can’t wait to see you hit 1 million!
Your videos are genuinely my favorite thing on this website.
Extra credit is awesome mate keep it up
Also the audio fade out made me think my headphones were fucked
Finally covering THE fifthist scp!!!
From what I gather, when the first big convergence failed due to Foundation interference, the Fifth Church decided to cut its losses and abort.
The author notes are fascinating. Love the extra addition.
I really appreciate the extra credit briefings, and tbh would love if you could make some addendums to do the same for previous SCPs you covered that were insanely interesting. With this i can safetly say you have surpassed The Exploring Series in terms of quality as the extra credit has been something sorely needed.
The extra credit portion is a very good addition. To be honest I kinda struggle to understand some of the scps. I would like to see extra credits for previous videos you've done. Thanks for getting me though work. Always look forward to listening to ur videos.
That Liverpudlian accent was chef's kiss, my guy. Class!
Holy shit you're treating us well... love it.
LMAO I was not expecting the Simon Cowell impression, well done
The Liverpudlian you did at the end was top notch as well
This is one of my favorite SCP’s. And the 1000’ series really starts to pin down the sparse, strange, horror of the SCP universe.
Yaaay, first Illustrated puts out a new video and now Volgun!
This is what i needed today! Thanks for the great videos Volgun!
Thanks for doing these stories, always entertaining and interesting. The creativeness that goes into them. Is a little staggering.
One of the best briefings yet and the extra credit was such a treat for thoughs who are very in to the lore
I really loved the extra credit on this one. Really brought more light to this SCP.
If you are considering doing extra credit for previous SCPs, I feel SCP-093 Red Sea Object would be perfect
"A Star, A Star"
For some reason this makes me think of Sagittarius A* (where the asterisk is meant to be pronounced as "Star")
The supermassive black hole at the very center of our galaxy.
Black holes, especially supermassive ones, are kinda the epitome of "dead stars". It fits with the "some stars in the sky are dead, but we still see their ancient image" as we can detect it even though we can't see it, etc. Idk, sounds like exactly the sort of thing this star based fifthist sect would be all about.
I like this one, and extra credit is a great idea. Well done.
The “A * A *” thing had me thinking of Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way.
You gained a new follower. Keep up the good work!
Fifthist church got my homie Dr. House. Fight it, Hugh.
I hope you continue this series as I love it and appreciate you so much
Another awesome scp greatness! Love it brother.. thank you for all the work you do…happy late thanksgiving
Awesome, thanks for posting, I'll be saving this for my bedtime story tonight lol 🐱
Thanks for the extra credit Mr. V! If you get any flack from the scientologists, I've got your back!
Fifthists after this bullshit they pulled: Hey, besties
Foundation: I hate you
