  • Learn five ways to dampen the ring on a vibraphone in today’s video from the PAS Classroom with Chris Dandeles. Teach your percussion students these methods, especially helpful for beginning jazz percussion players.
PAS Classroom is a video series focused on quick and valuable tips and tricks for percussionists, drummers, music students, and (in particular) music educators. Learn techniques and strategies you can take back to your percussion classroom or performance in under three minutes. PAS Classroom is created and produced by the Education Committee, with contributions from other committees, of the Percussive Arts Society.
Chris Dandeles is a member of the PAS Education Committee and a percussion educator and is active as a clinician, adjudicator, composer and consultant. Chris currently directs the Waubonsie Valley Symphonic Band, co-directs the Warrior Pep Band, and assists with the Waubonsie Valley Marching Warriors. He also directs the Waubonsie Valley Percussion Ensemble and World Beat.
PAS members have access to the many more resources in our extensive library at pas.org, and get a discounted registration to the Percussive Arts International Convention (PASIC), the premiere percussion event each year with over 100 world-class clinicians, concerts, new music debuts, workshops and hours of educator professional development. Give your students these benefits as well (plus an exclusive Masterclass) with a Group or Studio Membership.

    Thank you- very Educational.
I’ve learned a few of these. I saw a guy slide his hand on the lower notes when he played the sharp and flat keys; seemed to work really well, especially as he was performing with a jazz pianist - helped with note / melody clarity.

Great job, very educational. That's two more than I knew. But I do love linguistics and etymology. So lets review, there are five ways to Damp: 1) pedal damp 2) hand damp 3) slide damp 4) touch-tone damping 5) adjacent note damping. But there is only one way to dampen 1) apply water to make it moist. Looks like we both learned something on this one. Damp vs dampen, damping vs dampening. Google those comparisons. And a question... where is dead-sticking represented, in touch-tone damping? Kind of but not really. Is there 6 ways to damp?
