DAREDEVIL Is Marvel's Greatest Loser: Here's Why That's Important

- A look at the many stories of Daredevil losing the fight, including everything from his early battles against Electro and Namor to his Blind Alley run-in with the Hulk to more spiritual defeats in Born Again and the modern dark era of DD, this video analyzes why Daredevil's stories of defeat and loss make him Marvel's greatest character.
Matt Murdock.
The Man Without Fear
Strengths: Expert fighter, radar sense, amazing lawyer, insane levels of willpower
Weakness: Anything strong enough to distort his senses. Catholic guilt. Strong and/or dangerous women. Depression. Self destructive tendencies.
The devil of hells kitchen
So true
Matt Drapdock...
Murdock Matt
Daredevil is and forever will be, Marvel’s greatest consistently written hero.

My favorite time Matt loses is during the Waid run, issue #7, when he's caught in the ice storm with a school bus full of blind kids. He ultimately fails to guide them to safety, but his persistence and compassion inspire the kids to build the makeshift sled and drag him the rest of the way when he passes out from exhaustion. He loses, but is ultimately saved by people he was kind to along the way. That's the stuff I love seeing in Daredevil comics, and you see it in nearly every significant run on the character.
It wasn't full of blind kids, they were just kids.
@@yigitcansonmez978they were blind, Matt is seen covering their eyes with their hats to keep them warm
@@yigitcansonmez978they were definitely blind
That kinda sounds like Daredevil ended up winning in that situation.
I think one of the reasons DD is so compelling is not only the layers of his character and unpredictability of his stories, but the world he inhabits; there is a touch of swashbuckling adventures, noir, magical realism, police procedural, soapy melodrama and even legal drama in his stories, which steers away from typical hero/villain confrontations.
Daredevil is my favorite Marvel hero because he struggles. He gets knocked down, but eventually gets back up.
Plus he has a disability. His other senses are heightened, but his blindness appeals to me. As a man who has cerebral palsy, I definitely think Matt is an inspiration!
Yup. Same! That’s what makes Daredevil great. Having a disability is his default state, but Matt himself never treats it as such, and the few times that his sight has been restored, it actually makes him a less effective hero.
That’s why I hate that DC made Barbara batgirl again instead of keeping her as Oracle, one of the only prominent disabled heroes in the DC universe 😢
I would’ve had cerebral palsy (if the stroke I had a birth affected me more) but I just wound up w severe vision loss. Matt is one of my biggest comic inspirations!
Never give up ❤
As a Catholic in the legal field, Matt Murdock similarly inspired me, I mean his interpretation of social obligation is genuinely profound, yes he beats up people, but he’s also very gentle and understanding of drug addicts, sex workers, immigrants, and even petty criminals, very Christ like in that sense
I know just what you mean with being tired of superhero comics, but never stopping reading Daredevil. I’ve given up most superhero comics lately, but I’ll read Green Lantern until the end of time no matter the quality.
Daredevil is my all time favorite hero, and the only one with comics that I enjoy binge reading. I think what makes him so amazing is how human he is, from how he handles loss and his will power, and man does he struggle so much lmao, almost as much or more than Spider-Man. My favorite showcase (besides Elektra's passing) of how he handles loss is Karen Page's death, on how distraught he is, on the verge of suicide, yet keeps doing what he must, to honor her. But all the arcs and stories are my favorite.
Absolutely LOVED this deep dive into one of Marvel's greatest failboys and the many ways his losses have helped define him. As an Iron Man fan I can't relate, I'm sure.
Congrats on a fantastic (if temporary) return to comics, Matt!
Thanks, my man!
I get what you mean about getting disillusioned with superhero stuff. That's why nowadays I tend to read miniseries rather than ongoings. Couldn't care less about the new issue of batman, but if somethung like superman space age is announced then I'm there for it.
So do I.
Matt Draper doing a DD video? I've been summoned
YES FINALLY A COMIC BOOK VIDEO!!!!!
It's been 84(1) year(s)
I'm glad to see more Daredevil content on this channel again.
And its vindicating to see the Namor fight brought up. I kinda bounced off of Silver Age DD when I was on like, a quest to read everything (I'll do it eventually, but sometimes its a bit much to take), and it was like, the first moment that really sold the element of vulnerability to me.
It always stood out as like, evocative of the character's strengths. Continuing to struggle and fight against an opponent he can't win against, and taking what victories he can get through that. (That's kinda what I like about the back half of Zdarsky's run actually. (I'm still loving this run as much as I did for those first 20 issues) There's this tragic irony in that like, The Hand, a ninja cult led by a demon from the pits of Hell, is a more solvable problem for Matt than the cruelty of the American prison system.)
HAPPY DARECEMBER IN JULY WOOOO
Spider-Man's usually the guy people think of whenever a superhero has constant hard times in life (it's literally a term called "Parker Luck"), but Daredevil often have it worse because not only doesn't have the powers to compensate some of his issues, he's also disabled which adds more fuel to how depressing his story actually is. That's why it's great seeing Matt fight in-spite of his issues because it perfectly demonstrates his will as a fighter for justice.
Matt's suffering is also organic and works in the character's favor, whereas Spider-Man just gets put through the wringer because the writers think that's all we want to see.
Never clicked a notification so fast. MATT DRAPER TALKING ABOUT COMIC BOOKS? I didn’t know you knew what they were.
But seriously glad to hear you talk about Daredevil again. The horror stuff has been so much fun though.
Kinda sad to hear that you've become burned out on superhero comics, as that's what led me to your channel. But at the same time I get it. I'm having the same struggles with superhero movies myself.
Having said all that, I'd be curious to see if you'd be open to exploring other genres in comics (like you did with Head Lopper or My Favorite Thing is Monsters). It's tough because I love your comics content and don't want it to go away forever but I also understand the burnout... I feel like I'm all over the place but I guess my point is that I hope you'll stay open to other genres in the comic world that I believe are worth exploring!! Best of luck in whatever you do!!
Your videos are so remarkable that they look effortless, which means, a lot of work went into them! Your video essays are always inspirational for my own fiction writing, so thank you so much.
Wow, thank you!
@@MattDraper In the end, can you tell me what purpose Goldy Goldman served in Daredevil?
Fun Fact: Daredevil has a sense of taste that is so acute that he can determine every ingredient in a food or drink, as long as at least 20 milligrams of that substance is present.
Daredevil, the greatest Marvel character indeed! Glad to see a revisit to DD, Matt! Very much missed Darecember last winter!
I'm sad to hear that you're not into superhero comics anymore, I would have love to hear your take on the current Fantastic Four run, also I think the new superman isnpretty good
You are fantastic with all your videos, but there’s something special about you doing a Daredevil video again. Thanks for the great work Matt !
Woohoo! Another Daredevil video from Matt Draper! Thank you again for covering ol' hornhead, Matt. You and the Netflix TV series helped me to discover one of my favorite comic book heroes.
You’re one of the few youtubers who actually analyzes comics, loved the video.
When I was at a moody point in my life few years back, I started reading Daredevil for the first time with Vol. 2. It was very depressing reading Matt's life constantly spiraling downward, but I loved how throughout those struggles he still kept pushing forward. It was why I got exited to reach Mark Waid's run, as I heard about the more positive change in tone. And after finishing it, I've found that's the beauty of his run: it's a change in tone, but not narrative. It definitely has its dark moments that harkens back to his struggles from before, while still re-enforcing the promise of hope and redemption, which has been the underlying core theme behind all of DD's greatest stories. Mark Waid's run is my favorite Daredevil run (and probably my favorite superhero comic ever), so I'm glad to hear it's your personal favorite DD run too Matt!
Also, I really appreciated your thoughts in the latter half of the video. Modern superhero comics under "The Big 2" can be largely underwhelming, with the lack of any real stakes or cyclical character arcs making me feel like I've either outgrown or gotten bored of them. Even Daredevil has his own share of repetitiveness at times. But the best advice I've come across is to follow the creators, not the characters. I've been giving Waid's other works a shot and I've been loving what he's doing right now with Dan Mora at DC. World's Finest and Shazam are great! I always loved this channel for the Daredevil content but I'll be sure to watch the other vids to expand my horizons more. Great video as always!
HOLY 💩, A COMIC VIDEO FROM YOUR AFTER A YEAR! 😍😍😍 THANK YOU! FINALLY!
I always find myself back here watching these videos, for the hundredth time. Thank you, Matt, for the past how-many-years of Daredevil media. I hope you always find a reason to talk about him.
Never thought I’d see the day. Guess it’s Darecember in July then.
My favourite "lost but won but lost" in comic books must be Loki's ending in Kieron Gillen's Journey into Mystery. I even love its rehash-but-with-substance in Al Ewing's Loki: Agent of Asgard.
Comic Book videos are back baby!!!!!
Guardian Devil is one of the most underrated comic stories of all times, this and Miller’s run got me into Daredevil, who now is one of my favorite characters of all time… so thanks Kevin
*Fun fact:* Daredevil's fight against Namor was tge first time Matt used his red suit. Looks like it didn't give him a pretty badass debut 😅
It will be nice to see him in the marvel movies
Golly, your videos are always a 10/10, but I love it when you talk about comics, specially DD. Great job! I remember watching ur unscheduled stop vid last summer at work😂
My favorite thing about Daredevil is that it's the only character that will get Matt doing comic book videos.
I TOTALLY agree with your assessment of the last portion of Zdarsky's run. I don't buy into the idea that Matt would go full "let's abolish prisons, everyone can be rehabilitated." He's been in the crime fighting business too long to fall for that naive thinking. He knows the system is flawed but absolutely necessary! He's not a "let's tear it all down!" That's actually probably much closer to Frank's logic. I think Chip basically allowed his own politics to influence his writing a little too much. You can't force your views onto an established character.
A Daredevil video NOT in DARECEMBER?! Heresy, but absolutly wanted
You may be bored with superhero comics, but those are not the only type of comics out there (yes, is the most predominant theme). What I'm trying to say is, would you give it a shot on deep dives about other types of comic books? Love the video, btw. 🖤
2:30 - That would make an amazing poster - screen saver - ...
I'm happy fog was mentioned it's one of my favorites
I did a slight deep dive into Daredevil earlier this year as I wanted to get some background before checking out Chip Zdarsky's stuff (I'll admit that part of my interest came from seeing his fight scene with US Agent, partly because I love DD's bearded ninja look), so I went back...before Waid, I believe, though it was definitely Mark Waid's run that connected for me - I'm a big fan of it for that more hopeful and brighter tone tempered with tough trials for Matt. Charles Soule's had some interesting stuff but never quite connected with me. I can understand the take on the Zdarsky run - even if I love its art and am quite interested in the political/sociological focus of early times (as well as where things went after Devil's Reign), it is a darker, more serious period. One thing I especially enjoyed was watching Elektra take up the Daredevil role, seeing her thoughts and being somewhat won over by Matt's ideology, it was sweet. I also think he found a neat use of Mike, a character who didn't work for me when he was introduced under Soule (I believe).
I miss Darecember. This was a nice surprise.
2:31 very heroes journey
I love the Daredevil videos you do!!!! They remind me how complicated and incredible this hero truly is!
Angry Spider-Man: "How can you look in the mirror every morning, Murdock?" 😡
Daredevil: "With some difficulty..." 😎
I really want you to talk about the “battlin jack Murdock” story it’s 4 issues long and it made me really emotional
I love your Daredevil videos. Even if I disagree with a specific point, we share a love for the character!
As somebody whose first DD run was Mark Waid, it was pretty frustrating to see Charles Soule pretty set right back to square one.
I understand your criticisms regarding the bleak tones of Charles Soule and Chip Zdarsky's runs, but I still think they're quality is top notch.
Rejoice, ye multitudes! ComicDraper hath returned.
Miller's and JRJ's mini series "Man Without Fear" got me into DD.
Hay Matt, first off I’m huge fan of your channel and enjoy your videos. Second I saw a while back you did that video on Alien dead orbit comic. I was wondering if you would consider doing a similar video of your most favorite predator comic series? Since it was announced that a new Alien movie and tv show are both in production.
I get the idea with superhero comics, when I look at mine backlog of comics or these that I still read they are mostly Villain comics (Darth Vader series), Hellboy world, Head Lopper, Birdking, Kill SIx Billion Demons, and things that offer something interesting like House of Slaughter/Something is killing children, Godzilla and so on. More the niche and weird and settings I'm interested in. Like Elric from Titan Comics, or Conan stories.
As of superhero comics, Atro City still holds my interest but these are less superhero stories and more stories with superheroes in them or as a background. Hell whenever Kurt Busiek is creating something I will read it, even if it is a car manual.
I started reading Rogue Sun, and it seems interesting, but the goal is to make main character traditional hero, I hope I am mistaken, but we will see.
I was literally just binge watching your Darecember videos again a couple days ago after reading Frank Miller's run for the first time, so this is such a great suprise for me. I only found it because I searched up "Daredevil" lmao
Excellent job. These are all the reasons I love the character as well. Another memorable beating for me is the one by "Sir" in #346.
Just recently became a Daredevil fan when i started the Bendis run and went on to read majority of his runs, I dont think I've ever met a character like Daredevil even in the comic medium where every facet of his character is so fascinating to dissect
I'd love to hear your full take on Zdarsky's run
I'm sorry to ask you this, but how do you download your comic book pages for videos like this? I'm trying to do the same but...I can't find how to do that.
Hey, Matt, can I ask the name of your opening theme and who the artist, please?
I never fought u do any comics let alone daredevil matt anyway welcome back and u doing any more comics
Daredevil should make an appearance on the Powerpuff Girls
i would love to see you talk about east of west
OMG A NEW DD VID MATT THANK YOU!
What did you think of the film and the later TV series?
You and Netflix are the reasons why I read Daredevil. Amazing video as always.
What fittingly makes Daredevil such a compelling and relatable character is the fact that WE cannot SEE what battle will come next for Matthew Murdock.
Kesel and later Kelly's run is great if you want Daredevil living a relatively normal life
I love your daredevil series. And daredevil is my favorite hero. Because of his resolve and morals.
Oh man! DARECEMBER RESURRECTED for a video!
I think my favourite DD moments have been his scenes with the Punisher. The antagonism between the two always leads to some great lines. For example, the rooftop scene from Welcome Back, Frank.
I still remember my first exposure to DD was reading Age of Apocalypse as a kid. One of the few surviving human characters. Although, somewhat ironically, one who served Apocalypse.
Daredevil deserve to have a ether Rogues gallery for such a great character he is.
Can you do a talk about the punisher?
I mean he was the ‘God Without Fear’ like two years ago. He could hear everything in the ten realms.
Matt is talking about comics again (and himself because he is the Murdock)!!! The world can now heal.
Awesome video 🤙
Besides, Spider-Man, daredevil was always my favorite marvel hero. In someways, he’s more relatable than Spider-Man, and that’s saying something, because Spider-Man is one of the most relatable characters in all of comics! With Spidey, nine times out of 10, you know he’s going to win in the end. With exceptions, of course. But with Daredevil, you really don’t know. Plus him being blind despite the height and senses always puts him at a bit of a disadvantage. But that’s why we root for him! Because his victory or victories are always very well earned.
Gotta love a daredevil video. I fucking love this channel
yes!!! back to the comic books
DD is that guy. I am unfortunately in the same boat. The Cape comics haven't been great in some time.
Thanks for the amazing video Matt. ❤ your Daredevil converge. Much ❤ as always
Daredevil is truly one of the goats. Dude might be the most flawed Marvel hero (who is still at the end of the day a good person).
YES, MATT IS MAKING NEW COMIC RELATED VIDEOS!!!
Excellent video review to me DD IS MARVELS GREATEST STREET HERO a guy weather win or lose will keep fighting. Also you should cover creator own books like kirkmans invincible and TWD Garth Ennis works as well
Gaaaaaah! I;d successfully forgot the whole Daredevil: agent of SHIELD plot for nearly five years! why bring that back!? :P
Spider Man: “Hey Matt, hold my beer”
I can't imagine how many canon event Matt Murdock have in his life
I wholly disagree, Matthew. Marvel’s biggest loser in terms of suffering is the Hulk. Bruce and the Hulk can barely be happy from arc to arc, let alone an entire run.
Daredevil has been happy and had his life together for long stretches of time, like during era where he and black widow were a couple, or during periods of Mark Waid’s tenure (until Matt’s depression took hold; but he wasn’t faking his the entire time).
Most all modern runs, end with Daredevil in stronger place than when he started. And that’s something that a lot of Marvel characters can’t say anymore (* cough * spider-man).
MATT IS BACK WITH THE REAL CONTENT (I loved the other stuff but am a big DD simp)
Man I have missed ur comic videos
That’s why I favor Daredevil over Batman. DD fights without fancy gadgets like Bats.
Curious, comic book content on a channel known for horror and monster film analyses, I suppose I will see what there is to say about this Matt Murdock
What a great concept to explore. Genius
Thanks Matt!
Matt Murdocks greatest enemy is 'how can I accidentally ruin my life today'
Matt is my favourite hero. His netflix series is incredible.
Finally another Daredevil Video!
HEhhehee like that phineas and ferb song, its Dare-S'winter.
I didn't know you were a wrestling!
He back!!!
He never gives up
Unlike the Batman, daredevil hasn't those high technology equipments. The only thing he has is his courage and wisdom.
YESSSSS WE ARE BACKKKKKK
