Glad to see it arrived with you. I remember when we were talking about ideas for what helmet you next wanted to get when we were driving back from Craigtoun. I saw this helmet in Oleg's group a couple of weeks ago now. He based the dome on the pioneer and coppergate helmets (which is why the bands are wider and go over the medial band). The triangles are unfortunately not based on anything, so I'm not entirely sure why he went with that. It sounds like you expected the bands to be more like the yarm, so that's a bit of a shame, but still. A nice lid.
A little bit, but then it's also a fairly valid interpretation for the construction in general. So overall I am super happy. The occasional blip isn't really too much, and in fairness we were both working in our second language for the commission!
Sorry to reply to this so late after the original comment, I only just saw the video so perhaps you already found this out. The triangles are based on the Pioneer helmet - if you look at profile images of the original you can see them about half covered by the narrow ridges on top of the banding. My helmet has these too.
Helgi's are fantastic, got a eastern-style gambeson from them for some rus reenactment which fits like a glove and it arrived really quickly. Oleg did ask me to resend my measurements and then laughed at me for being skinny, so it's even motivated me to go to the gym again now that lockdown is over to get back in fighting shape. 10/10 would buy from Big Oleg again
We really have no proof of gambeson in neither viking age scandinavia nor eastern europe. Rus "reenactment" really turned into a shitstorm, with stupid fests like Wolin.
03:08 I love your kitties. Somehow it makes me happy knowing you are a cat-daddy. Cat people are my kind of people. eta: Oh and the helmet is really cool too! Good to see you are feeling better.
Fantastic video! Super interesting and detailed. I wholeheartedly appreciated the cat photos as address censoring. Let's make it the new industry standard haha!
Excellent video as always! On the topic of helmets, have you seen the danish bike helmet psa that has been floating around recently? I suppose given your world I can't image you could have missed it. Good for a laugh
I'd have to see the leather up close, but it could be what's called Russian leather. With Russian leather the source for the tannins used in tanning the leather is birch bark and leaves and then birch oil is rubbed into the back of the leather. That style of leather tanning makes a leather that is water resistant, very flexible and supple and with a fantastic grain. Those qualities would all be great for a helmet liner, and also make it the best leather to use for razor strops. A side effect is that the leather comes out with a reddish hue from the birch so the finished leather is usually dyed either red to reinforce that color, or black. The full Russia tanning prices is, I believe, 17th century, but birch has been used in both Russia and Scandinavia for tanning probably since tanning leather became a thing there so I'd expect a lot of period leather from that area would have had a red hue.
Glad you are feeling better! Beautiful helmet, Jimmy! Looks great on you! Can't imagine how much that set you back but if it makes you happy (and clearly it does!) then it's totally worth whatever it cost. I'd imagine a good helmet and armor was a considerable portion of the owner's wealth back in the day.
POINTS FOR: your cats, the casual mention of reading russian and the awesome helmet, the sean connery voice :) Oh the inside! So nice to see the construction. It makes sense. The bands on the ouside are constructional and not for decoration.
Ivor Laughton used to say a good helmet fits your head like a vaccuum seal, and i'm inclined to agree. Joe has a Coppergate style helm made for him, and its a perfect fit, and because of that it feels comfy and he cannot feel it that heavy on his head. We have similar sized heads and I tried it, and its astonishing. For a helm made in the mid 90's as well it really is exceptional. Great lid dude!
This is a work of art man! The small personal details he added are no different than any armourer would have done back then! He's doing top quality stuff! I'm going to order!
Welsh kitties must have names.................looking forward to seeing a video around what goes on at a reenacting event. GORGEOUS helmet, as well...........love the brass work!!!
I just recently received an order of Squama armour from Helgi. If anyone is planning on purchasing armour, I definitely recommend. It's was made quite fast and really well.
Nice unboxing video of a great helmet. Good to see you're better! Btw thanks for the rabbithole of Helgi's true history shop, they should sponsor you, 'cos this edwardian aera girl now wants viking/medieval armour, household items and fibulas.....
Hey Jimmy- just a minor point and I know this is an old video, but actually we have more surviving of the helmet from Tjele besides the mask! They're lost now, but with the helmet were four 1cm thin bands, analogous to the helmet bands from Gjermundbu, so it's not unreasonable to think that at least in Scandinavia that type of construction was actually more common and was certaint used on the original helmet that the Tjele mask belongs to :)
Jimmy, thanks for the vkittie content. They are so cute, and the helmet is AMAZING. It so well made, you can really tell the artist cared about what he was doing. Thanks for sharing it with us. Glad you're feeling better.
Love this. My first one was half a metal world globe with a cardboard face shield that my brother made for me. I was 7 and he was 11 wanted to protect us from the flsttened aluminum swords he had made us to spar with.
Enjoyed the unboxing and even though I’m never going to be in the market for a helm, I had to go check out the shop because I have a deep appreciation for fine work … and WOW. Well worth checking out.
0:05 The Yarm Helmet was found in the North of England, on your window sill?! Cool! By Brunel's Cigar, that is an impressive viaduct. That's an impressive helmet.
Thanks of the detailed unboxing, that's a beautiful piece you got there! Extra points for the vikitties. I think you accidentally gave a demonstration of how quickly helmet hair happens as well hahaha
Umm. I feel as though you've been holding out on us with the cat footage 😁 Love the wide band! I always found the large rivets too clunky for my taste as well. But then, only the uber rich could afford fancy riveting work. So unfair. I realise I would have been an insufferable . . ."and now we see the violence inherent in the system. . ." peasant type.
Ooh, pretty. I like the way the brass contrasts with the steel. Nice cats too. The middle one looks exactly like an old cat friend of mine. Glad to see you're on the mend!
Firstly and in order of importance... 1.what are the cats names? The longhaired B&W has a look every cat owner is familiar with..... the "what in Basts name are you Doing human?!?“ look. 2.Good to hear your voice is sounding better, and you're looking much healthier(hopefully this wasn't just recorded pre covid) 3. I work with metal and the thought of hand setting all those rivets is doing my head in. Nice piece of metal work.
A friend of mine has got a reconstruction of the Tjele fragment on the Gjermundbu helmet, but as it was actually found with both bronze and silver decoration, it's gonna be amazing!
Compared to your other videos this one doesn't seem as exciting or educational and overall it seems very simple and something that you can find anywhere on UA-cam. However, with finishing it I had realised I was completely captivated with your helmet, so much so that I never checked when the video was going to end once or went to scroll through your other videos. I know this sounds like I think of myself as this expert reviewer who's opinion should be held at high standard but I just wanted to express how I really really enjoyed this video despite what I mentioned previously. Love what you do Jimmy, when it comes to vikings your the man I trust, if you read this, have a lovely day, or if you read this in the evening, hope you had a lovely day.
I read it in the afternoon, and am in the process of having a lovely day! Thanks for the feedback, it's always useful to know what sort of things people find interesting and on their level compared to my other material :)
Glad you choose to be as historically accurate as you can be given what survives. Great job, looking forward to more info on surviving evidence on kit.
You look well. Happy to see that. KITTIES!!! What is the knob on top for? How do you know that the eyebrows didn't come off of an Oden fancy-dress type helmet from the period? And am I seeing things?? At 4:42, it looks like the new one has sunglass lenses in it -- ??! Lovely lid!
It was startling to see it on you - for some reason. I think it was really brought to life at that moment and suddenly cast me back yonder to when the original would have been worn. Very cool goodies unboxing!
I notice on the Yarm helmet, it has the "nipple" on the top of the helmet, which is something we also see regularly on Anglo-Saxon shield bosses in the archaeological record. Is there evidence that the "nipple" was also used in the "Scandewegian" tradition?
Cool helmets! I really wonder how effective they are compared to modern helmets (like builders wear or a motorcycle helmet). Someone probably has done some stress testing on a reconstruction.
I dont even care about helmets but I was riveted (pun semi intended) to the entire video. I just like seeing people show interest and expertise, plus getting to learn. Im the kind of nerd who likes to learn. Thank you for sharing and so carefully going over this piece for us. P.S. for me, besides this vide is an ad for some ridiculously ostentatious "Viking" which feels extra amusing as I just got done watching the video that covered necklaces and pendants which stressed the subtly of the jewelry. Im working on catching up on the videos I missed due to life issues.
Glad to see that you're feeling a bit better. I would have expected someone of your status to have had cloisonné garnets at the eyebrows. Or had they gone out of fashion by the 10th Century?
That helmet looks amazing! And to think, if it weren't for the interwebs, archeologists a thousand years from now might be unearthing reproductions like this along with microwaves and smart phones, and scratching their heads in bewilderment! Also, your kitties are beautiful!
You said you were going to oil your leather, would not it have been softened and made more supple and protected with bee's wax or tallow? Just wanted to check that idea out. Looks to be a very nice fit and awesome construction.
Another great vid! This is really helpful after joining a reenactment group and looking out for things for avoid, I love to see a feature on period accurate spears and swords 👀 Thanks for all your hard work mate, hope you're feeling a bit better! Also, say bore da to the kitties for me :3
That's a beautifully made helmet and you're right, it looks much more realistic than the ones in the movie clip. The brass over the eyes adds so much character. They did a fantastic job in the construction of it. You look like you're feeling so much better, but there's still a need for plenty of rest, so take care not to over do anything.... I knooow, you're a Viking and you're tough, Lol. Just be careful. The cats look lovely and sweet. Now all they need is each their own Viking kit with helmet. :D Take care and stay safe.
The additional rivet hole in the tjele helm... It could be that the right-hand side has just been melted by time, but do you think it's possible the decoration continued around the left-hand spectacle-bit to emphasise one eye? Seems odd to me (assuming there was no right-hand rivet) to off-set it like that unless the left-hand side was heavier for some reason.
Nice to hear you less close to Deaths door! So here's a question what kind of helmet would you go for in a Brythonic impression? I have a Wenceslas just for safety rather then authenticity but have been looking at maybe a Shorwell or something akin to the Coppergate

That's amazing!! It's so smooth and shiny. I don't think the points are referencing anything, but they sure look cool! Who's to say they didn't have a little flair back then. Hopefully you'll get to use it soon
Well, now you've done it. We shall now expect Viking kitty updates on a regular basis. 🐈🐈🐈
yasssss kitty updates
Agreed. Welsh Viking kitty updates are now officially canon.
No evidence of a Welsh viking whatsoever dragons yes but not viking
Kitties!!
Excited for the new helmet! But also, yay kitties to cover mistakes!
Glad to see it arrived with you. I remember when we were talking about ideas for what helmet you next wanted to get when we were driving back from Craigtoun.

The triangles are based on the Pioneer helmet - if you look at profile images of the original you can see them about half covered by the narrow ridges on top of the banding. My helmet has these too.
The triangles also nicely echo the nose piece.
The triangular pieces at the top reminds me of a “dart” like in sewing to fit a curve.
KITTIES!!!!!! That's some very clean work. Really nicely done. I'm glad you're feeling better!
Very stylish brain bucket! Hope you're feeling better. Love seeing the cat pics, too.
Helgi's are fantastic, got a eastern-style gambeson from them for some rus reenactment which fits like a glove and it arrived really quickly. eta: Oh and the helmet is really cool too! Good to see you are feeling better.
Sewing machine oil would be enough to coat/prevent rust, but be easily acquired in small amounts.
Fantastic video! Super interesting and detailed. I wholeheartedly appreciated the cat photos as address censoring. Let's make it the new industry standard haha!
Those kitties are adorable! Such floof! 😻😻😻
And that is a very nice helm. Glad that you are happy with it.
I've got a sword from Oleg and love it, he does amazing work and he works with you when it comes to payment plans. Highly recommend
Excellent video as always! On the topic of helmets, have you seen the danish bike helmet psa that has been floating around recently? I suppose given your world I can't image you could have missed it. Good for a laugh
That bike helmet video is hilarious! I love it!
That's a beautiful piece.
I think an overall video on crappy re-enactment helmets in comparison to the real ones would be very useful.
You read Cyrillic too?!? Of course you do. You're brilliant, Jimmy!
So happy to see you so happy with your new bit of kit…and of course, privacy kitties for the win!
Beautiful helmet, thank you for showing all the details. It's always a pleasure to see quality items crafted by professionals.
This was really exciting! I have worked in Tjele and I didnot know this.
The helmet from Oleg is absolutly beautiful!
That helmet is so cooool....and the cutest cats...and good to see you out of bed and looking really good

Awesome helmet, now I need to see you reenact and fight in it!
Very pretty.
I recommend Ballistol, unless you want to go with a period appropriate oil.
I just recently received an order of Squama armour from Helgi. If anyone is planning on purchasing armour, I definitely recommend. It's was made quite fast and really well.
Kitties make a great address cover.
Nice unboxing video of a great helmet. Good to see you're better! Btw thanks for the rabbithole of Helgi's true history shop, they should sponsor you, 'cos this edwardian aera girl now wants viking/medieval armour, household items and fibulas.....
There were definitely Viking kitties!

Whal Hair Clipper oil might be just the one for all Your needs , that is a very nice helmet .
Enjoyed the unboxing and even though I’m never going to be in the market for a helm, I had to go check out the shop because I have a deep appreciation for fine work … and WOW. Well worth checking out.
Beautiful piece of kit. Due to the wider bands probably superior in protection compared to the heavier helm.
0:05 The Yarm Helmet was found in the North of England, on your window sill?! Cool! By Brunel's Cigar, that is an impressive viaduct.
That's an impressive helmet.
Glad to see your feeling better :) That is a magnificent helmet. You can truly see the care the maker put into it.
I have had a Tjele-style Gjermundbu-ish helmet for a few years now as well! Glad to see another version.
love a Viking with a big helmet...
Kitties! They're so cute. Also love the new shiny.
Thank you for going through all the details, and the comparison was really interesting :)
Thanks of the detailed unboxing, that's a beautiful piece you got there! Extra points for the vikitties. I think you accidentally gave a demonstration of how quickly helmet hair happens as well hahaha
Jimmy... deep dive into helmet.
My brain... soooo pretty... soooo pretty 🥰
Nice helmet too.
Umm. I feel as though you've been holding out on us with the cat footage 😁
Love the wide band! I always found the large rivets too clunky for my taste as well. But then, only the uber rich could afford fancy riveting work. So unfair.
I realise I would have been an insufferable . . ."and now we see the violence inherent in the system. . ." peasant type.
I won't be buying a helmet, but you look happy about it so cheers! It is quite pretty
I look forward to any and all attempts (and successes) by yourself at making your own one day! :D
Love the tjele helmet fragment
Nice. You could add a little bling to it, such as Aurochs horns or condor wings, maybe even Irish Elk antlers. Such would make it soooo impressive.
It'd be ace for a fun LARP event, but not for reenactment :)
3:30 your long hair cat it's exactly like mine omg ♥
Ooh, pretty. I like the way the brass contrasts with the steel. Nice cats too. The middle one looks exactly like an old cat friend of mine. Glad to see you're on the mend!

that was the style i was looking at on Oleg shop.
Glad to have you back!
Gorgeous lid.
Glad you choose to be as historically accurate as you can be given what survives. Great job, looking forward to more info on surviving evidence on kit.
Thats a really nice Helmet.very neat workmanship. Will you commission more of the fragmentery finds?
You look well. Happy to see that. KITTIES!!! What is the knob on top for? How do you know that the eyebrows didn't come off of an Oden fancy-dress type helmet from the period? And am I seeing things?? At 4:42, it looks like the new one has sunglass lenses in it -- ??! Lovely lid!
My uncle-in-law in Norge breeds cats, so this means your address masking job is historically accurate.
It was startling to see it on you - for some reason. I think it was really brought to life at that moment and suddenly cast me back yonder to when the original would have been worn. Very cool goodies unboxing!
That's gorgeous! So glad that it was exactly what you were after.
I notice on the Yarm helmet, it has the "nipple" on the top of the helmet, which is something we also see regularly on Anglo-Saxon shield bosses in the archaeological record. Is there evidence that the "nipple" was also used in the "Scandewegian" tradition?

I really wonder how effective they are compared to modern helmets (like builders wear or a motorcycle helmet). Someone probably has done some stress testing on a reconstruction.
Just wanted to stop by and say that these reproduction helmets are gorgeous... Love your channel, and the Welsh bits just as much as the history!
Glad you're feeling better! Love the new lid.
We need names on the cats?! Cool helmet too lol
I dont even care about helmets but I was riveted (pun semi intended) to the entire video. I just like seeing people show interest and expertise, plus getting to learn. Im the kind of nerd who likes to learn. Thank you for sharing and so carefully going over this piece for us.

KITTIES! 😻 We're going to need some more information, sir!
Very nice helmet Jimmy! Grats!
Glad to see that you're feeling a bit better. I would have expected someone of your status to have had cloisonné garnets at the eyebrows. Or had they gone out of fashion by the 10th Century?
They had, as it happens! If I put a nice rich 6-7th century impression together...
The original Tjele seems to have bronze on the nose as well? Which I'm not seeing on the reproduction. But I think it looks fantastic regardless!
Came for the kitties. Was not disappointed. ;)
That helmet looks amazing! And to think, if it weren't for the interwebs, archeologists a thousand years from now might be unearthing reproductions like this along with microwaves and smart phones, and scratching their heads in bewilderment!
Also, your kitties are beautiful!
Very nice helmet and kitties! Are you going to embellish one eyebrow?
I hope to get a vendel helmet one of these days maybe one of the more heavily armored ones or get one that's based on several pieces.
Also, say bore da to the kitties for me :3
Your cats are so cute!
Glad to see you back---and with a super helmet!
Cool helm, lovely cats also Jimmy.
I've come here to say you some words of support, you are making great content and I love it. Best regards from Ukraine
That is one snazzy helmut. It's so cool to appreciate how it is made. Also welsh viking kitties☺️
You should consider an episode where you rate people's kit and off suggestions.
Thank you for sharing ❤️
Omg your cats are so cute! And you read cyrillic? I want to know more!
And the helmet was cool too. Beautiful workmanship.
I learned a little Russian a while back, and the alphabet and phonology stuck :)
That's a beautifully made helmet and you're right, it looks much more realistic than the ones in the movie clip. The brass over the eyes adds so much character. Brass eyebrows on fleek
Man your opening title card is sick
the helmet looks great!!!
Nice to hear you less close to Deaths door!
So here's a question what kind of helmet would you go for in a Brythonic impression? I have a Wenceslas just for safety rather then authenticity but have been looking at maybe a Shorwell or something akin to the Coppergate
That's a lovely piece of kit! 😍
Tjele is basically next door from me, so I'll put it on the list of local sites to visit)
Ah the joys of unboxing a custom lid and being a little unsure about it when the reality differs from your mental image. :p
Nice bit of kit though. Very well made and the shaping and details on the ocular piece and brows are gorgeous.
That's amazing!! It's so smooth and shiny. I don't think the points are referencing anything, but they sure look cool! Who's to say they didn't have a little flair back then. Hopefully you'll get to use it soon
