It's hard to argue with the notion that Malo's "Suavecito" and War's "All Day Music" were the two most beautiful songs of the entire decade of the '70s.
Still don't know why they (Malo) didn't continue having more hits or more publicity. They were such an amazing group heard all over the world, I heard them in Okinawa Japan back in 1970 (I heard them for the first time in Puerto Rico back in '69 but did not know who they were until I found out Jorge is Carlos Santana's brother) wow!
always dug this cut,the music, harmony, arrangements, horns, tight rhythm section and this cut on a breezy sunny day hits the spot.the Santana brothers and family always been the musical truth
We are riding toward 6 flags over Texas in my dads 1972 Old's 98. First car we had with a stereo radio..... I remember like was the other day this song playing on the radio. I thought we were rich,, we were far from it. Thanks for letting me go down memory lane and posting this
This song is a classic! I certainly wasn't around in the 70's but with my parents being 70's/80's kids I heard this song alot growing up in the 90's...it makes me glad to be on this earth...everything about is is just so chill
Hispanic....Latino....Spanish.....some of us prefer one term over another and that is alright. This song was a hit in its own way back then.....1972.....it was a hit for me....and it represented my American and Latino roots.....loved it....still do.
I was born about 8 years after this song was released, so obviously I don't have any first hand knowledge of it's impact. I live in Los Angeles, CA and heard this song a few times on the oldies radio stations here. I really like it. Great tune, music, lyrics. I love older music from the 50s and 60s, most of which I heard through various oldies stations. I'm surprised it took me so long to finally hear this one. It must not have been a huge hit at that time.
I did not know Ernesto Guavera could sing so well and looks great for his age! Now seriously. This is one of the best songs ever recorded. Great job Malo! The world needs more music like this.
Did anyone pickup, this playing for background music on a reel to reel in the move Ice Storm, came in 97 but set in an upper middle class families in 1973. Great movie.....Love that 71 Buick Riv in the movie driven by Kevin Kline. Great music, glad we still have this classic to listen too. No music today can touch this. Thanks so much for posting,
It's tight to read the comments of those who were around when these jams came out and the nastalgia you get from hearing it again, eventhough I wasn't around when it came out, I can appreciate it and your memories. Music is universal and timeless.
All we have are our memories, and thank god for that!! Both of my parents died in their 60s and although this wasn't there style I still remember them dancing in the middle of the family room to other music... it was nice to see, and something that I will always cherish...
Have not heard this song in many years but I heard it today on the cd for the Showtime series Dexter. I grew up in Miami Beach where the show is supposed to take place. I can remember hearing this music coming from someone's transistor radio on WQAM and mixing with beach sounds, people laughing, children playing the waves and seagulls and an air plane pulling a banner up and down the coast!! I loved this song!
Wow! Takes me back!!....cruzin' the parks in my honey's green metal flake riviera....didn't get much better than that! Wonderful days, Wonderful Music! Thank you for sharing
Richard Bean wrote & sang lead on the original recording of Suavecito, by the time this segment aired Richard had already left the group. Jorge Santana would later follow & start his own band simply calling it "Jorge Santana." Jorge would once again teamed up with Richard on lead vocals, the songs Sandy & Love the Way made some noise for the group. Richard still performs with his band Sapo & once in a while brings Jorge to the stage as a guest.
I was introduced to this song and many others from the same era in Cali when I was in the Army. I had a buddy who opened my ears to a lot of great music. Thanks Gomez! Missin Cali right about now...
I think this song is the greatest expression of love. I pray the Malo will not let anyone ever band there music from anyone hearing what truly comes from the heart
On this date in 1972 {Apr. 22nd} Malo performed this song on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand... A month earlier on March 4th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #18 and spent 12 weeks in the Top 100... The lead singer for Malo was Jorge Santana, the brother of Carlos Santana... R.I.P. Mr. Clark...
This song reminds me of my older brother Buddy he was alway's up on the music. the reason why I paid so much attention to it. These were great times when a Bronx NY neighborhood was a family. Kids could play in the streets without fear. We all looked out for one another. I had great times and such sweet great memories of my friends and family.
If anyone one here is into Latino music .. as in salsa...I found that not only did Carlos Played with the big boys in this very same era in time,. .but also Jorge.. now for me this became special,.. because I was already listening to Santana , then I hear a song call El Raton, In this song,. Jorge delivers another master piece by a Santana... I love history,.. later yo
I'm not a child of this era but I remember growing up and my family playing oldies all the time for cookouts and this song always stuck with me. Definitely passing this music on just like my parents did
Wow! I remember Malo played in San Francisco at the Filmore area. This video certainly brought back the pleasant memories of the old school romance in Suavecito!!
These songs played in my house on the first stereo we ever owned. I remember these songs and singing them The songs of my childhood. My parents, being the people of that generation, played this music with pride. Thanks for posting this.
Woooooow esta musica la escuchaba y bueno era un agasajo escucharla la escuchaba y aun estaba en la secundaria y la ponían en receso de cada materia ¡Hay¡que linda época indudablemente MALO es lo maximooooooooooo
suavecito has become one of the favorites in the chicano dances this song is played either by conjunto or DJ at least one time if not more than that. truly a favorite of la raza. thanks el torito .
I seen Malo in Fresno about 10 years back and had the Malo album with Suavecito on the record autographed by The great Arcelio Garcia..It was a highlight in my life as a music fan..I stil have the album and treasure this band...It's also amazing that this band as all other Chicano bands are ...Multi racial... Think about it...Peace!!!
This was played by my fahter in our basement growing up. The South side of Chicago. Its was a great time. I remember coming home from grade school and hearing this song played loud from down the street.
every time I hear this song I always get butterflies... this song has soooo much emotion in it that you can just feel the love in this song... it truly is a beautiful song my boyfriend told me about this song and I have to honestly say this is good taste in music you dont hear music like this anymore... very beautiful
WOOOOOOW HERMOSO CIERTO WOOOOOOW QUE RECUERDOS TAN BELLOS Y GRATOS COMO OLVIDAR ESTE GRUPO TAN HERMOSO MALO EN AQUELLOS IEMPOS FUE LO MAS MARAVILLOSO SIN DUDA AUN LA RECUERDO COMO SI DUERA AYER HERMOSA CANCION SIN DUDA WOOOOOW QUE RECUERDOS CIERTOOOOOOOOOOOO
The young conga and bongo player in this recording is none other than Raul Rekow. Karl Perazzo and Rekow have been with Carlos Santana for decades right after Chepito Areas was kicked out of Santana's band. Many good percusionists played for the Santanas brothers bands, Orestes Vilato, Walfredo Reyes,Armando Peraza,Coke Escovedo etc.
Heavenly post!!! Thank you for the memories and the sweet tears! With this song, I had my first platonic love at 10; and I still play it, but never got to see it... En mi Guatemala el Grupazo RANA nació y creció imitando a este grupo, implementando el ritmo SOCA afro-caribeño, that today is just a landmark of real good music. Gracias!
I have 500 vinyl albums incuding Malo's which depicts what looks like a Mayan man with a woman with her eyes closed in his arms. Side 1 has Pana, Just Say Goodbye and Cafe. Side 2 has Nena, Suavecito and Peace. The album was released in 1971 on Warner Bros Records. Most people aren't familar with the song or group until its played. Great tune.
This is pure latin rock gold. I was honored to know this band and the members in it. You can see Arcelio Garcia, and Jorge Santana at The Greek Theatre on Memorial Day Weekend (Saturday) along with War, Tierra, and Thee Midniters this year.
It's from Rollin on the River - a TV show from the late 60's/early 70's hosted by Kenny Rogers. I believe the appearance is from 1972. It's on DVD called 'Remembering the 60's" which is commercially available. Hope they release more of these discs as for now there's only a volume 1.
WOW!! It's great to have some of the actual band members in this clip respond to comments here on You Tube. Groovy. I noticed Leo's (lead singer) comment earlier. Thanks guys for making this lovely and classic song.
This is the song that played on Dexter's season 5 episode 2 when Angel Batista was beating up the foul-mouthed cop at the bar! Perfect choice! LOVE this song!
Man, this is way better than the recorded version. The front man is right on the money. He looks like a lot of latinos I grew up with playing. Young but a vet. I bet he's got some storys. I'm glad I found this.
What a classic video...thank you. This was one of the first incarnations of Malo...Tom Poole on lead trumpet...Raul Rekow on congas..Leo Rosales on Timbales and Lead Vocals...and of course..Mr. Malo himself..on back up vocals...Arcelio Garcia...Jorge Santana on lead guitar...and the great and late Richard Kermode on keyboards..what an awesome lineup....and yet the magic continues...go see MALO
Great song from the early 70s that only recently is getting some retro-respect, particularly in movies placed in the 70s. I always got a kick out of comments like that of the host when introducing Malo- the Santana connection. That was played up by casual fans. Those who knew both bands know that's where the similarities ended. I loved them both, but for different reasons. Suavecito mi linda, indeed!
Who needs a lowrider to listen to this? Just sit back on the couch with a cool one and let this song take you where ever you want to go! thanks for posting
My Suavecito record got broke in 1973 I ordered the 45 and it took them 1 year to get it to me. I have the song on c.d. also. This was sort of a different kind of music on the top 40 and really didn't make it big until oldies stations started broadcasting this Diamond of a song. Suavecito is one of the few in history to sell more as an oldie. I think the timing of the song may have kept it's ratings down. Horse With No Name was at the top of the charts early March 1972
Beautiful song ,also reminds me of times when my bro played in some great bands and covered the best of Malo ,El Chicano,TOP,Chicago,Buddy Miles, too many too list. I'll bet 'Sugar Ray" loved this song so much he borrowed part of it.
Surprisingly, both brothers sing GOOD...they're just not into much fanfare about it. Smooth, suave, and elegant...romantic. And the percussion, brass, arrangement, and what-not. Well...love can do it! :)
This song makes me think of my Family and all the loved ones and freinds that have passed on, all the Homies that I knew growing up that have also passed on, all the weekend B.B.Q's in the back yard with the old lady Hot summer days spent drinking Budwiser an Corona cooking Carrne asada, Just staying out of trouble, kicking back and injoying life. Working hard from 9 to 5 waiting till the weekend just to do it all over again but it never lasts forever Lifes hard then you Die! Lou from Whittier.
@ Kushelia Sukhu - The man in the tank top is the great Arcelio Garcia co-founder of Malo. Arcelio Garcia was called by some "The James Brown of the Bay Area". In the 70s - KLIP1220 AM radio station played Malo's music in the Fresno area. KLIP's founder was Woody Miller, a local legend in the Fresno area.
Of course, after falling in love with Santana's music, I just had to hear this song....which, being more latin in feeling...had a totally different approach...so romantic and easygoing...which, to me at least, is unique...and folks, thats's why I love this song...loved it, when I was 15....and love it now at 57....some things never change....fortunately...
really like this song it takes me away. my dad introduced me to this song when i was 17 and now i am 42 and he is 77 i played it for him and he said "wow what a great song, where did you hear it" ... ha needless to say he drank a lot back then. p.s. play this song for the ladies ... just trust me on this ;)
Saw the in San Anto in the 70's @ La Villa Fontana, man they rocked. They were played nationwide due to their song being on the billboard to 40 hits for several weeks.
Ahhh, the music of the 70's and 80's. It was the best time ever!
And it never goes old
Lourdes Acosta Live in the moment and you'll never have to look back at the good times, just bring them with you & make new ones as you go!
+norbit peters what? my good times are like gifts that I carry. why should I have to give them up? be here now and then, dude.
??? - "just bring them with you".
Oh gee remember light cha-cha ymmm

This song is by far one of the greatest one hit wonders ever to be recorded. Love this song!!! The long version is sweet.
I grew up in the Northeast, and had never heard this song until I moved to Southern California in 2000. Needless to say, L.A. rocks!
always dug this cut,the music, harmony, arrangements, horns, tight rhythm section and this cut on a breezy sunny day hits the spot.the Santana brothers and family always been the musical truth

A wonderful song from back in the day. It still sounds good after all these years. Thanks for sharing
I love this classic since i was a boy in the 70's now I'm a grandfather. For ever young baby!

This song takes me back to Wahiawa and KKUA radio in the early 70s. Such a pretty and mellow song.

I agree! There were some great groups and music in the 70's and 80's
