  • On a very wet and humid day, LMS Black Five no. 44871 ventures onto the West Somerset Railway hauling the West Somerset Steam Express to Minehead. The day also featured the Rail 150 event to mark the 150th anniversary of the opening of the line from Watchet to Minehead. However, I decided to focus solely on 44871 as the LMS Black Five powers up the steep somerset hills towards the seaside. The weather was pretty miserable with rain and cloud, the order of the day. The rain got worse around lunchtime and I decided to make do with just the outward leg due to worse weather later on.
I managed to capture the Black Five three times along the route. My first shot was at Longlands Bridge between Norton Fitzwarren and Bishop's Lydeard to see the Black Five powering away from the main line bound for the southern terminus of Bishop's Lydeard to change from the mainline crew to the West Somerset crew. Afterwards was a short drive to Churchlands Bridge on a steep incline to Crowcombe Heathfield. The rain started to fall, but the Black Five kept its feet and sounded really good even though the diesel was doing a bit of work which is understandable considering the load. My final shot took me to Washford and my word did the weather worsen. I got to my location in time, and as I finished setting up, I heard the loco near Watchet and as I saw the engine, the heavens opened. From heavy drizzle from the previous shot, to an absolute downpour at Washford, it was challenging. However, The Black Five sounded really good up the steep gradient towards Washford Station on her last few miles towards Minehead.

Brilliant footage. We were lucky enough to be on board and able to enjoy the 150th celebrations at Minehead. Sorry you had the worst of the weather. We didn't realise it had been so wet. For the couple of hours we had at the station we had the privilege of seeing the turntable in action. A fantastic day. Thanks for capturing the journey for us xx❤

Great video, I see what you mean about the weather worsening through the day! Must have been something of a red letter day for the WSR crew who got to continue the journey to Minehead. I note the safety valves were feathering nicely at all times, although it was evidently getting some assistance from the 47 in the last shot. Thanks for sharing.

Can't believe that I haven't been down that line since 1966 on the way to Butlins. 😮

Not sure why I think this but I would like to see these engines run independent of the rear loco. This is one great video, nothing like British steam!!

It's because this was a through special from the main line on the national network. The loco is there for back up in case of failure on the main line.
West Somerset Railway's own trains normally run with just one loco or it may have two as a double header for specials.
Ironically, towards the end of steam in 1968, steam engines occasionally came to the rescue of a diesel hauled train attached to the front of the new diesel locomotive.

Thank you for that explanation!! I can tell that you completely got where I was coming from. I know also sometimes these loco's in the back might supply electrical support to the coaches.
