Hi Chris, I have the variable ND RF to EF adapter. The drop in filter goes in via the side of the adapter, not from the top. You shouldn’t have any trouble using it with the Smallrig cage. Yes, you’re correct in that you need to buy a clear filter if you take the variable ND out of the adapter. It’s a ridiculous additional expense… but there is a silver lining to buying the clear filter: I’ve found that when I’m not using the variable ND filter, the clear filter insert acts as an additional barrier to dust entering the camera chamber when changing lenses out in the field. The clear filter is also excellent quality; I’ve not noticed any image quality degradation when using it. Great setup, Chris! Looking forward to seeing what you create with it!
Thanks for the great feedback Hadrian. Such a great idea with the additional dust barrier. Awesome! I have definitely gone back and forth on purchasing the ND RF to EF adapter. I already own the control ring adapter, I had considered getting the RF to EF adapter and not the clear filter. Virtually having two adapters. I know it would be slightly more money with that combination, but thinking I just switch adapters when I need to rather than the clear filter, still allowing me to use the control ring for other low light scenarios. I think one of those options will save time instead of the screw on filters, but we shall see. Have you noticed any blue colour cast from the VND? And thanks I am looking forward to getting out and capturing some high resolution 8K content. :) Have you had any success with this on the R5. Curious if you have had any overheating issues with the short clips here and there in the field? Chris
@@TheNaturePhotoGuys Yes, unfortunately when the variable ND is set to its maximum strength there is a strong blue colour cast, just as there typically is with most other variable filters. I try to avoid going to its maximum as a result. With that said, when not set to its maximum, there’s very little colour cast throughout the rest of its range. Overall, I’m quite happy with its quality, and I’m not normally a fan of variable NDs. I have used the camera for 8K! I shot quite a few short clips in 8K RAW last summer while travelling. I predominately took 1-3 minutes clips. I didn’t have any over heating issues to speak of despite recording internally and shooting in 25 degree+ temperatures. I’m not sure how the camera would have faired had I been focused more on video, though. I read somewhere that it’s the CFExpress card that causes the R5 to “overheat” when shooting 8K internally; the card gets so hot that it heats up the rest of the internal components. With your external SSD set up, you should be good to go until you run out of memory! People seem to be getting extraordinarily good results with the R5 and Atmos Ninja V+, with no overheating issues at all regardless of the length of recording session. Please keep us all updated on your thoughts and experiences with the R5 + Atmos combination as time goes on!
Thanks for the feedback Hadrian. Sorry for the delayed response. I ended up giving in and purchased the Variable ND. Going to use the control ring adapter in low light conditions, and the variable ND during the day and in my Real Estate side of our business. Thanks for the tips on that. I am happy with it so far, but I will update going forward. I am definitely looking forward to shooting more 8K content with the external SSD. The Atomos Ninja V+ has been a great tool so far for 4K. Looking forward to capturing 8K raw going forward in the field. I will for sure keep you updated on how this is working.
Hey Luis. While I hear the R6 is better in low light conditions, what won me over on the R5 is the high megapixels, 45 vs 20, and the 8K video capabilities which the R6 does not have. I think they are both amazing cameras, so if you don't plan on shooting 8K video, and aren't concerned about the megapixels, you might be able to save some money with the R6. I like the ability to crop in with the R5 with the 45MP and still have a great image result. Definitely a tough decision. - Chris
Hi Joe, what case (1/2/3/4/auto) do you guys use for wildlife photography? It would be great to see a video of you walking through the autofocus menu settings with the R5 for wildlife (even though I own an R6 lol). I know you’re both R5’ers lol. Do you guys use dual bbf?
Hey Terri! That’s a great idea for a video review. I’ll get some screen captures for you, to help get you started, and Chris and I will work on the video. Chris and I do use dual back button focus!
Content is well done and it’s really helpful but the sound effect every time you add a caption is really irritating. I actually abandoned the video half way through because of it.
Thank you for the comment Tony. You will find in recent videos the sound effect is used very minimally and in most cases not at all. Totally understand. 👍🏻
Great video guys!🎥👊🏼
Thanks so much! :) Glad you enjoyed the video.

Can’t decide R6 or R5 I shoot birds in my back yard and vlog around the house Lol so far I got the 800mm f11.
